Fontaine also says mook once or twice.

It was old Gangster slang for a contemptable or worthless person.

Yeah, I remember how I got into a stupid argument on here. People were arguing that, since Jacob is a welder, slag referred to scrap metal. It doesn't, its a Western European derogatory term, used today. Its not massively offensive, it doesn't really have a definition...

I thought it referred quite broadly to someone with loose morals? (Usually female, unfortunately.)

Well, of course! That would be the gentlemanly thing to do. People can fill in the blanks themselves.

Well, isn't a slag a term that's generally equivalent to slapper? My mother and I still use them interchangeably...

As for "mooks," yeah, its a word of derogation. Its a bit like the modern day "idiot," I guess.

Well, I'd have no problem calling my mother a mook but I think calling her a slag is a bit beyond the pale

My mom's from Manchester (in England) and we're both rather crude to each other I remember going through highschool and failed first attempts with makeup were met with "you look like such a slapper!" and my response of "don't be such a cow" was met with "you look like a slag, go wash your face."

And this behavior continues to today. Is good times.

    Slag

    1. Vitreous refuse left after ore has been smelted, dross separated in a fused state in the reduction of ore, clinkers. (This is probably what Jacob refers to what with his being a welder.)

    2. Volcanic scoria

    3. sl. derog. A prostitute or promiscuous woman.

So, yeah! You've been calling your mum a ***** all this time, Codex!

Sorry, I live in Canada and have to say where things are a lot of the time. Best question: Is Manchester near London? Response: no, but it's near Blackpool. Where's that? *facepalm*

Typical everyday conversation for people who find out I lived in another country. OH WELL.

@Oberael: She does it to me too T_T I don't feel offended though Neither of us care xD

When I tell people I'm from Glasgow, I sometimes get asked either "Which part of London is that?" or "I know so-and-so from London - you know him?"

Trainspotting is one of my favorite movies of all time! Or were you the Scot that I already told that to?

"It's sh*te being Scottish! We're the lowest of the low. The scum of the ***** Earth! The most wretched, miserable, servile, pathetic trash that was ever sh*t into civilization. Some hate the English. I don't. They're just wankers. We, on the other hand, are colonized by wankers. Can't even find a decent culture to be colonized by."

No, no, you haven't spoken to me about that. I'm a wee bit further West than Edinburgh, though. Oddly enough, most of Trainspotting was filmed in Glasgow. The pub where Begbie throws the glass at the girl is just around the corner from my college.

My god I envy you. If I lived anywhere near that place, I'd be there every night throwing glasses at people's heads. I bet that's all the rage there, huh? People just bopping one another over the head with beer mugs and what have you. Not a unfractured skull in sight.

And Let the Right One In (Låt den rätte komma in) is one of my favorite foreign films ever!!!

Bono is a jackass! Argh, I'll show you some real Irish music!
I don't really like U2, haven't listened to them since the early 90's. I just know that Irish people have this inate contempt for him so that's why I brought it up

The american re-make isn't even out yet. I'm sure Althea was talking about the original Swedish one.

Thanks Ian, I tried both of those because I really liked them (plus a whole lot more pics) but they keep getting saved to this forum looking awful. I don't know why but I'll try to save a perfectly clear picture to this forum and suddenly it has all these rough edges and blotches all over it when it gets saved here. Anyone else notice that?

No I'm talking about the Swedish one. The American one hasn't even come out yet but I'm not looking forward to it as I have no doubt they'll get it all wrong! I just read that it features the girl from Kick-Ass (which I haven't seen) as the vampire: http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/article...make-let-me-in

Absolutely, I thought Bill Paxton was hilarious in it and Adrian Pasdar was really good-looking when he was younger! Did you know that it was directed by Katherine Bigelow, the same woman who just won the Academy Award for The Hurt Locker.

Just make sure to crop the picture and then resize it so that it's not larger than 100x100 pixels. If you try to upload a higher-resolution picture, it ends up looking like a mess.

Ah thanks Zero, I think that's what the problem is. I was wondering how some of you have clear pictures whereas mine tend to end up looking grainy and awful .
