Question Simon Wales: Religious before or after Lamb.

When Delta first sees Simon, Sinclair says "but when Doc Lamb came along, Simon got religion". But one of Daniels Audio Diaries says "back in the motherland, Simon and i designed cathedrals, but i was the black old sheep back there, never believing a word of the Jesus bollocks myself".

So was Simon religious before he met Lamb or did she convert him?

She converted him. Daniel says "Now it's 'Father' Simon Wales!"

They only designed cathedrals. Many people in Ireland or Scotland have an innate sense of religion. When he comes into Rapture and makes a religion for Lamb, he becomes a fanatic.

    Question

So basically, at firts he was religious in Christianity, then in "Family Beliefs" as Lamb teached him. He sort of switched religion?

Maybe, being Irish at the time, they had a Catholic up-bringing but never really believed it. But Lamb, turned him to religion, to the Family.

2K basicly mocks religion with the 'temple of the lamb'.

A person/group of people see something they don't understand and automatically create there own 'story' as to what is happening and why it happened etc. Get followers to believe in your preaching of FUBAR and religion is born.

Religion is central to Irish national identity, because it's the one thing that makes them Irish rather than simply "not English." Thus, even Irish people who have abandoned religion still regard themselves as Roman Catholic; it's such an essential aspect of their identity.

We don't actually know whether or not Simon Wales did have a religion before he met Dr. Lamb. He probably considered himself Catholic, because Catholicism is as Irish as leprechauns and luck, but he only started to follow an actual religion (of his own founding) after he met Dr. Lamb that was based on her ideals. Jack replaced Jesus, ADAM replaced the Eucharist, etc.

    Kind of like...Ayn Rand, eh?

The point that 2K wished to make about religion is that it's easily exploited and manipulated by people outside of the religion who do not believe in it in order to serve their own ends. Simon Wales believed that Jack would return to deliver Rapture from evil; Sofia Lamb took that belief and added her own doctrines to it in order to fulfill her ideological goal of altruism. (I actually would've preferred the original story of BioShock 2, when there was only Jack worship, and none of the "Eleanor Lamb is our salvation!" crap.)

I'm wondering, if the Wales brothers were atheist (or, perhaps for Simon, agnostic), would they have been allowed to work on cathedrals? More then once I've talked with fine carpenters and architects who wouldn't be allowed to work on churches because they were of another religion or atheist. Of course, Voltaire worked on a few churches himself (even dedicating them in "the name of God", as I recall) despite the fact he was an agnostic. Though they could have just used religion as an identity, or simply feigned belief.

One of the weird things about Simon is his audio diaries that were cut from the game. In his sermons he seems to combine his Jack/Lamb-worship with religious screed relating to Gnostism.
