Exclamation Guess who (mistakenly) called me today?!!

    True story.

So it's about 8 something in the morning here, I'm making some breakfast, still a little groggy, and I suddenly get a strange, early phone call (must be East Coast; I'm Central right now). I should preface this with the note that I've long known that my cell phone has the same former number as a well known person in the music publishing industry named Mike (My name is not Mike, BTW). So I'm always getting calls from people calling the wrong number wanting to make deals, presumably to license the music his company controls or things like that.

Anyway, the phone conversation goes like this ... I'm not changing a word, I swear (except maybe paraphrasing the blathering part):

KL. "Hey, Mike. Ken Levine here."

    *stunned pause*

    D. "I'm sorry, did you say 'Ken Levine'??"

    KL. "Uh, Yeah."

And at this point I really start blathering like an idiot, like a reflex, it just started coming out.

    D. "Well, this isn't Mike's phone but holy crap I've been following your game from the beginning and it's a fantastic coincidence that you call a wrong number to me. I've been posting at TTLG and the 2k forums, and I even just posted a response to something funny you said. It's just ... sort of incredible that you'd call me by mistake."

KL. "I'm sorry, you're breaking up."

    D. "Oh, uh," the rest said very distinctly & staccato, "You have the wrong number. This isn't Mike's number."

KL. "Oh, sorry about that. Thanks." *click*

    *Another long, stunned pause*

    Was that really ... ?
I'm thinking to myself, I'm almost certain they're going to want to get licenses on some old songs for BioShock.
I look at the number still saved on my cell phone.
I couldn't resist!! I ran to my computer and Googled the number, just to see what might come up!

Unfortunately, I have to say the Fates were just toying with me.
The number was for a "Ken Lavigne" in Pennsylvania.

He must have wondered what the hell I was talking about!
I have to say it had my heart rate up to about 200 for a few minutes, though!
A coincidence like that is just too weird.

    what a story...

  4. There's another Ken Levine out in Hollywood, as well as an entertainment lawyer named Ken Levin. Accept no substitutes!

I once met someone (who I seem to remember later did some art work for Metal Age (although I could have my wires crossed there)). While she was over here she looked up all of her favourite writers etc. in the phone book and, as I understand it, a few of them were actually listed. As far as I know she at least got through to Neil Gaiman. She and I used to talk on the phone a lot and she almost got me a job in Boston. To this day I regret not following that through, but I guess it probably worked out for the best.

Hoping the 2K team are x-directory (that's english for 'not-listed' (not a reference to the other directory (the one reserved for superheros etc. )).

I imagine Ken might respond to this thread in a day or so saying 'Thanks buddy, I was listed' (nothing like crazy fans and industrial psychopaths to really screw up a dream )

Ken doesn't have time to phone his buddies

Mayhaps you're getting caught up in some sort of international intrigue demagogue. Bioshock could be a front of misdirection, the Irrational team is actually creating an underwater utopia for the meritocratic and progressive-minded elite to inhabit after the USA civil war goes full throttle.

I don't think anybody has to really worry about my humble, little story except poor Mr. Ken Lavigne. But seeing as he really has nothing to do with nothing around here, I'm not that worried about him either.

As for international intrigue, well I am a demagogue.
Maybe it just comes with the job description.

I'm with you there (to my good friends I'm known as Narly (short for Nyarlathotep))

I like your avatar— André Breton, writer of the 1924 'Surrealist Manifesto' (Le Manifeste du Surréalisme).

For those of us who are not interested in a "New World order", Polticians, Judges and Lawyers aren't on the top of our "will need" list. Since your one of the rare legal types who doesn't suck, your good to go.

Yeah, cuz I'm sure a pocket civilization will be able to run smoothly most of the time on the merits of its citizen's goodwill and complete lack of crime or rule violations. A "judge" is as simple as a collection of people on a council, and a "lawyer" is anyone standing up for the personal rights of someone who cannot do it themselves.

    A "politician"......

My thought at the time it was said was, ok, here he is trying to get out of a socially awkward situation, haha, I better just play along and diplomatically cut this off (which explains my next sentence).

But when I discovered it was just some random guy, I found this quote funny because then it sounds more like: "I'm sorry, you seem to be losing it in the head ... so ..." lol.

Breton indeed ... a hero of mine for many reasons. I don't understand why Dali gets all the raves when he was the one selling out and backing Franco of all people. It was Breton that really made Surrealism what it is. All the work and somebody else gets the credit! (Although I can't resist posting this picture of Dali here. He looks a little like a Big Daddy himself, doesn't he? He did have his moments; I'll give him that.)

(By the way, there's a Nyarlathotep on the Dark Mod team/forums. But I don't think that's you because you probably would have already recognized me from there. But just in case, I mention it.)

I think Dali probably basically 'popularised' surrealism, and was kind of the poster boy for surrealism, with his big moustache and his slicing up of eyeballs in Un Chien Andalou,

No, it's not me— just a (cthulhu) mythos reference.

I think I'm the guy who runs around on his own in the wilderness, and goes a little crazy like DiCaprio's character in The Beach.

True, programmers (good ones) carry a very analytical mindset which is always a good thing. I couldn't survive programming classes, and that was back in the day of Turing and Visual Basic

We were right about that 1^0 being undefined.....
