All this talking about the statues... tbh, I never actually noticed them moving/missing etc, just killed the damned splicers when they showed up.

But I have two scariest moments yet. First, like others said in the dentist's frozen room. U get the items on the table, then turn around and a nice sweet zombie face looking at u. I had the shotgun equipped at that time but we both were stunned looking at each other before I took his brains out from half an inch away. Yeah, both me and the doc.

Second one. early-mid game ur exploring a room at the medic clinic(whatever) lvl, where they keep the bodies inside. There's a small corridor filled with water, and at the end of it just before the corner, theres light with a splicer doing some kind of experiment on something. Light go out, then you walk there to find ''just'' a body on a table. So I go past that, im against the wall(looking at it) and searching a smaller table for items. I just turn around... and froze again. The lifeless body's head just keeps staring at me. I mean it was just a dead body. BUT IT WAS F*CKING STARING AT ME. Up until now im not sure whether the body had indeed turned around w8ing for me, or that was his position from the start. Anyway, my heart just stopped there for a mere second. And thats the beauty of bioshock. Getting creative, scared and awed, by one of the buggiest games of the recent months. Priceless.

BTW, when I realised whats happening with Ryan-Fontaine(after the mind control diary) and watched the cinematic, damn, that was bioSHOCKING like hell.

Would you kindly agree with me ?

I don't really have any scary moments yet. The only thing that scared me when I was in a Dental Office and when I picked up stuff from a table. A doctor splicer's face filled up the whole screen. I was like "OH ☺☺☺☺!", I wrenched his skull hard...

  3. #123
    what was mine?

all I have to say is, don't...turn....off....the.....lights.

oh and in fort frolic atrium, there is a bathroom with splicers in balet positions. the music there is good too.

another scary part, running out of health packs, ammo, or eve

Thumbs up Comprehensive Med Pav list

Urgh the Medical Pavillion. Gives me the Jibblies

first instance: you pull the security lever for the first time in the med Pav and if you look behind you the door is open and you see some female splicer dart passed. heart attack rating 2.5/10

Round 2: The classic; in the little dentist room. cliché, steam fogs view. oh no! a body on the chair. pistol to the dome just to be sure. ok coast is clear. oooh a few bucks on the counter! akk stoopid mist again. I'll just be on my way.
"Oh why hello mr surgeon excuse me while i just lie down and hyper-ventilate for a bit."
heart attack rating, major corony bypass/10

round 3: not a predefined one but it was bad for me.
Final showdown with steinman. See him thru the glass from a distance holding a mg. bit obvious he's gonna shoot the glass so i snuck behind a corner for him to pepper the glass in. steinman comes out the operating bit and gets promptly dispatched. i then wander into the bit with the corpse on the chair and listen to the diary. oh yes, that one. just as it ends I look up and notice for the first time the ceiling decorations

    Heart attack rating 8.5/10

round 4: just before seeing steinman for the first bit before he runs off. You open the door to the bald corpse of a woman sitting in a wheelchair.
Now considering the translation of corpse in this game roughly equals; non moving body that may actually move quite sharply, I always leadify this particular installation just for peace of mind.

Heart attack rating: prolonged exposure may lead to mental anguish

Round 5: "mortuary blackout" wow a lovely shadow of a gruesome operation I'll just go see round this corner, maybe have some tea and cakes.
    PING! lights out.
    nuff said.
    HA Rating 7/10

Round 5: blue screen of death
Heart attack rating: oh for god sake!!! Out of ten

UPDaTE: Round 6: playing through medical pavillion again. got to the bit in the morgue when the lights go out and the surgeon pops out of the cooler thing.
Pasted him as soon as he appeared cos I knew exactly where he was.
Smugly left the morgue and the little coffin room to come face to face with a howling splicer straight after opening the door.

I got cocky thats all I'm saying. Rookie mistake.

Cant remember anything scaring me. I aint trying to act tough, games can scare me but Bioshock hasn't really done that to me.

    Oh wait, now I remember!

Fort Frolic, I go to a bar, find a secret switch, walk down the stairs I then find it odd to see a statue facing a corner sitting down. Ooh a power to the people machine! Lovely, turn around....wait a minute AAHHH!!

Scariest? There are many moments of scary..
I think it would be the first houdini splicer you meet in Arcadia. First I was like, "A guy not trying to kill me? =D *follow*" But after seeing him show up two more times...something felt wrong. Something felt like I was about to get swarmed with splicers, attacked from behind,...AHHHH. <D>

I ran through that part to escape all, "ZOMGZOMGZOMGZOMGNUUU". Splicers showing up everywhere and mess.

Ah, the good times the good times.

    Exclamation

Ok, so I'm one of those "waste not, want not" OCD players who has to check every corpse, box and nook so I don't miss anything... Well when I was focused on one of the "corpses" and it popped back to life I was so shocked I forgot to shoot at the target for the first 10 secs Though after a while I got used to recognizing which ones were actually dead. Usually the ones with the blood all around them were safe to approach

My thoughts on that exactly. I was like, "Oh well that's interesting who put that there it wasn't there a second ago OMG it's MOVING!" haha

Has anyone tried to shoot a proximity mine on the sitting statue, then go to the Power to the People machine? Would the splicer blow up once it gets up from the chair, or does the computer just manifest the splicer out of thin air?

I've activated the Power the People machine while still facing the chair, sort of angled myself right. Yeah, it just pops right about of thin air. Not nearly as scary when it does that, I assure you

That is the scariest one that comes to mind.

There was also one in fort frolic. Before I knew that those plastered splicers were actually corpses, I found a room with a plastered family sitting down at a dinner table. They were completely white, except for their slashed throats...

  13. #133
I hate the feigning death splicers so much... I swear they're louder than the others. Fortunately, you can spring them early with Target Dummy (extra points for setting down mine or cyclone first).

I remember very gingerly approaching and hacking the camera on the street on the way to Fontaine's poor house and the camera immediately detected a fake corpse in its view. Poor guy was probably just sleeping off a hangover and a pair of bots shoot him to death.

  14. #134
    LOL some pretty cool bits!

Sephris, that bit in the Funeral Homes is pretty cool - he actually comes through the freezer to get you - if you look closely when you come around the corner to where he's working you can see the door shutting behind him...

That with the appearing dentist - was it me or is he as surprised as you are. I swear he said 'What the...' Before I pumped 100 machine gun rounds into him.

But no, the shotgun one in the Dental part takes the prize, I think.

  15. #135
Oh yes, and Opus, that's in Cohen's gallery isn't it? Then there's those two rows of them as you go into the booze shop...

I never played the game in the dark it scares the hell out of me. When you first come to Rapture and the splicer screams scared me, then when you walk a little more and that monitor explodes right before you get the wrench.
When you get electrobolt and atlas tells you about the 1-2 punch. That splicer running with the pipe dragging behind him scared me, then i walked around and turned to see him standing behind me.
In medical pavilion when i went in and that fog came up and that body appears on the table scared me a bit but then when i went up to the table and then turn around to see him standing there i yelled "holy crap!!!" and jumped as i shot him with my shotgun.
Then those damn hodini splicers are horrible, the first time with the wicker mask, i heard him say "hello beautiful" and i just shuddered and i turned and he turned to blood just scaring me.
And those statues, my god. I enter looking for that power to the people machine and i hit that button and i walk in, use it and look to see the splicers blocked my exit. I was about to **** myself.
Those spider splicers scare me too, you never see them coming but you hear them, then when they land in front of you, you jump.
And I always have static flesh tonic, and one time i shocked a big daddy and i walked away. Literally 5 minutes latter he comes running in and charges into me and kills me.
This was the most scary game i have ever played no doubt

This would be why I placed a lvl 2 cyclone trap right behind me when I activated that machine during my second playthrough.

For me, I totally hate those "pop-up" kind of horror things, so the Twilight Fields surgeon, the mist doctor, and the clay chair splicer all freaked me out even though I was expecting the last two. Those are the short-term freaky made-me-jump scenes.

But I think more effective are the little suspenseful things: shadows running across the wall, splicers ranting to themselves, the lights flickering out. They're not necessarily scary, but they so well convey the sense of Rapture being destroyed and wasted that their contribution to the atmosphere of the game makes the "real" scary things that much more fitting. Would the fake corpses in Hephaestus have been as chilling if the lights didn't cut out first?

I only experienced this once (or maybe I just imagined it )
In Fort Frolic...the area behind the frozen part. There was a hole in the wall (plaster broken) with a health pack or something in it. So I went over there to pick it up..and as I approached the hole, somebody ran by very fast and took the health pack. and I jumped...

that was the only time I saw this.

I shot all of the staues i saw in fort frolic, i kinda figured they would come alive since this is bioshock. So i never experienced that. When i was in the dentist office i swung my wrench as i turned around so i only saw the dentist dead on the ground. The only thing in this whole game that scared was the music in that housing complex near apallo square, ill be walking and all of a sudden i would hear these sets of ?eeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!? sounds like little kids screaming or somthing. Even now i cant explore there without turning the sound off on my computer.

I think that's my favorite environment. Housing is supposed to be comforting and safe, and with the initial Lot 192 side effects everything looks dusty and grey and everyone's homes have been turned into barricades of cinder blocks and barbed wire, like you're staring directly into the face of man's inhumanity to man.

If you've seen the movie Children of Men, it reminds me a lot of the final scenes there.

    That one scared me too.
I'm glad I never noticed the moving statues, I may not have been able to finish the game if I had...
Another scary time for me was when I was finding the cure and was chasing a bomb thrower with my flamethrower (I'm only a tiny bit psycho, I swear ). We'd been running laps for a minuet or so and I finally got sick of it and shot him, only to be smashed in the back by another splicer. So in a panic, I shoot him AND a Big Daddy that was a ways behind it. So I run, and it fallows, shooting me on the way, while I'm thinking, "F***, f***, f***! Where's that stupid door I came through?!"
...It was a little ironic, now that I think about it...

These things i liked werent especially the jumping stuff like the dentist in medical and the cemented spider splicer, even though they were good the first time, but its those disturbing scenes and images that stay in your head and creep you out every time you see them, like Cohens posing statues in the toilets in FF, the Russian couple in the hotel who committed suicide, Stienman's bloody artwork and signature all over the walls in Medical, the creepy statue in the clothes shop in Fort Frolic who made me jump when i burst in and he was just staring at me... and of course The special piano piece cohen prepares for you, the one with the bombs on it, I thought that was kinda cruel to poor Mr. Finnigan

    oh yeh

Oh man yeh I forgot about that statue in the clothes shop. Its pretty gnarly cos the clothes shop is surprisingly uninteresting then you turn the corner into the completely plaster cast room with mr bunny ears there. Freaky deaky I shall name him. I swear I just closed the door and sidled straight on out.

Masha's parents.OOooh that gave me the jibblies

    Oh yeah. That clothes store!

I never stay there for long. It just has some sort of awesome repellent or something. I can never stay there long.

But yeah, definitely good job on Fort Frolic. Had a slightly more spooky feel than most parts! Maybe because of it's vicarious sense of normality?

Well, that and a bunch of other five dollar words...

The part that scared me the most was when you first meet a Houdini splicer. You go find that Lord of the Rings-esque wooden mask, and all of a sudden I hear, "'Ello love!" I turned around and this Houdini splicer freaks out, then disappears. It made me jump so bad.

Oh yeah, that one scared the CRAP out of me the first time through. That and when you grab your first shotgun, the lights go out, and all those doctors and nurses start swarming you.

And about the clothes shop in Fort Frolic, it's considerably less boring when you're fighting a nitro splicer in there. Lots of stuff to get blasted around.

The first time through in the mediacal pavillion when you meet the crazy Dr Steinman stabbing thee crap out of his patient. My fear worsened when he went "this one! Too fat! This one! Too Tall! This one! To symettrical! And this one? SHE WON"T STAY STILL!! Whats this goddess? Its a man. He is ugly. Ugly! UGLY!!"

    Still creeps me now.

    Sorry for double post

Shame i've never seen the plaster guys but the same thing happened in condemned criminal origins. You look away and look back, there closer. look away and look back, there right next to you. I took an hour break from condemned after that.

  34. #154
well right now i'm in neptunes bounty... and so far the scariest moment in the game for me was in the medical pavillion when i first picked up the shot gun, the lights shut off (OH Crap!) and splicers attacked me!!! when i was killing them i was like... "oh ****, ****!" ...lol

    someone probably mentioned this part...

    Talking ahh yes classic

lol i tried to telekinesis the shotgun fom behind the metal fence but its friggin glued to the ground or something.

The easy way to finish that bit is to run into the room with the rpg turret.

    badabing bada dead splicers

also the most anti-climactic part in the game was the proving grounds when im watching the little sister harvest and you heard the sounds of screaming splicers echoing through the hall. (just like in welcome to rapture when ryan traps ye)

After watching the corridors one lonely club wielding neanderthal* - and the loser of this years spelling bee,,, Bigjackafro!! -
    comes wobbling down

    wheres the hoardes???

oh well it was fun clubbing him.

Scariest parts of the game for me is when you first get out of the water, i spent a good 5 minutes deciding wether to go into the building or not,, i was wondering if i should just get back in the water and make a swim for the nearest mainland

bit that got me the best was the dentist, your looking at a tabel or something then you turn around and he just staring straight at you, i propper ☺☺☺☺ my pants at that point, lost all control of my hands and couldnt even press the mouse buttons to despatch the wrench into his skull

LOL, for me it was when my 360 crashed! I didn't get all to frightened in the game because I loved the artistic style of the game too much. The intro video with the Big Daddy killing you is definitely creepy.

I guess moments where I was low on plasmids and weapons got tense, esp. with those blasted nitro splicers...

It was about one in the morning and ya know right after your ambushed by all the "dead" guys (i think in heptus) wich all though scarie the big thing was i thaught every corpse in rapture (wich in retrospect there is a hell of alot of them) was going to kill me. So i am out of shot gun chemical througher grenade cross bow and eve with little health. So i have about 3 tompson shots (that wont do anything and about 3 anti armour pistol rounds. No blood ariund he tompson suspieciouly close to his hand. I start aproaching him and my dog puts his head on my lap so I jump upmy knees hit the desk and the chair flips over and I hhit my head on another chair mean while the guy was alive and started shooting me i reach up to my mouse and fire twice and get 2 head shots
That both sacred the **** out of me and hurt..... alot

A side note did anyone else hear the creepy trailing voices of children in Fort Frolic's background hum? I was at a gene bank near Mcdonough's diary in the shopping center when I heard this trailing "Dadeededadeedaaa...". from the silent hum of the Mall. Creeped me out. I hadn't had any real quiet time to notice it before. Between that and the plaster splicers that place was the scariest of the lot.
