The Multiplayer Tips N' Tricks Guide for the Noobish-Impaired

Many of these things will seem like old-hat to most of you here as this is a list mainly intended for players who are brand-new to the multiplayer. It's compiled of many of the little tidbits you wish people would have told you when you first started out so you didn't have to learn the hard way (you know, where you usually end up DYING first)

Please feel free to add new tips and tricks to this thread!

1.) The effects of the Incinerate and Insect Swarm plasmids can be cancelled by Aero Dashing.

2.) The effects of Insect swarm can be cancelled by hitting the melee button 3 or 4 times.

3.) A popular strategy to use in the lower levels is Aero Dashing into an enemy for a stun, then using shotty (prefered with 'rate of fire') to own them!

4.) A popular strategy to use in the higher levels is to Electro someone to paralyze them and lower their defenses, then score an easy headshot with the elephant gun!

5.) The big daddy suit doesnt spawn as 'random' as you might think! There are 3 designated locations for each map. Learn them for quicker grabs.

6.) Winter blast can freeze doors, slowing down pursuing foes.

7.) By constantly tapping the trigger, the nail gun can be kept revved. Just dont expect to be sneaking up on anyone sounding like a hoover!

8.) More then just a ground dash, aero dash can be used to traverse gaps! i.e. Move from one balcony to another.

9.) Geyser traps can also be shocked, so that they deal massive damage. ALSO if someone gets hit with one of your Geyser Traps, they are wet for a few seconds. Shock them for a instant kill.

10.) Woah! Not so fast! Two gene tonics take effect after a players death. "Death trap" makes a corpse explode after a few seconds, killing you if you're researching it or happen to be nearby. And "resurrection" brings players back to life! You'll notice people who have this equipped will fall to the ground in a funny way. Then their body will glow and their corpse will rise. Their health will be very low as a result so quickly melee them over the head to put them down for good.

11.) Geyser Traps can be used to jump to inaccessible places. So whenever you play a game like Team ADAM Grab, always make sure you go into the match with either Geyser Trap or the Leg Up tonic equipped because people WILL hide with the Little Sister in areas that aren't accessible to people who can't perform higher than normal jumps.

12.) You can freeze hacked Vending machines to disable the traps!

13.) Also, to negate the effects of an electrified Geyser trap, simply SHOOT the geyser trap and it will go off, allowing you to continue on your merry way! The same can be done with the detonating bombs that the Big Daddy sets. Shoot and they explode.

14.) If you see one of your teammates on FIRE, feel free to use Winterblast on them to put out the flames!

15.) Telekinesis can be used to launch rockets back at turrets. Also it can be used to pick up big daddy mines for your own use! Also, it can be used to catch homing grenades! ALSO, it can be used to catch bombs that fall out enemy vending machines. Just make sure you're already holding something with TK before you try to catch any grenades or rockets!

16.) Got the Big Daddy blues? Winter blast actually lowers defense. Try using it with a nail gun to bring em down! You'd also be surprised how effective melee can be on a frozen Big Daddy. (Insect swarm also blinds the Big Daddies very effectively.)

17.) If you Winter blast an enemy, then Aero Dash through them they will shatter.

18.) During ADAM Grab or TEAM ADAM Grab if you have the Little Sister while hiding and you know for sure a pursuer is right around the corner, you can drop the Little Sister by pressing fire button to start shooting your pursuer

19.) Death trap aka "the explodey thing" is unlocked at level 38. and is well worth it. You know all those enemies you see researching your body on death cam? lots of em blow up

20.) For maximum effectiveness on Geyser Traps, place them on a place where the space is very tight and closed in. The smaller the place, the harder it will hit the roof / wall (Don't forget to electrify them).

21.) You can tell a vending machine is sabotaged by a red light on its right side. A blue light means a teammate has sabotaged it (you can still use it). A yellow light means no one has sabotaged it. However, if you join a game that's already in progress, there's a glitch in the multiplayer that will show a yellow light even for vending machines that have been hacked by the enemy. Use caution whenever you join a match that's already underway. This glitch goes away after your first death in the match (which will probably be by vending machine explosion!).

22.) If an enemy turret is firing at you, you can use incinerate, winterblast, electro bolt, or insect swarm to stun it for a few seconds so you can get close enough to hack it.

23.) You can research any dead bodies, not just the ones you killed. If no one else is there to claim it grab a snapshot.

24.) When you become the big daddy you have more attacks than just the rivet gun. Left trigger will throw a proximity mine. Very strong and if it hits someone dead on is an instant kill. Left Bumper is a stomp that will stun any close enemies. Very helpful if someone hits you with bees or keeps circling around you.

25.) Also, hitting up on the D-Pad makes your character groan like a Big Daddy, which does nothing. Just an easter egg

26.) Freezing something with winter blast makes your hack complete faster.

27.) Don't restrict yourself to one range of gun, always have a mix. An example of
a bad load-out is a elephant gun and a crossbow. It limits u to only long range
shooting effectiveness. An example of an effective load-out is the shotgun for
close range and machine-gun for midrange.

28.) Hack and research with caution. Give the area a quick double check
to make sure you didnt miss the guy hiding in the corner before trying to hack a turret or research a corpse.

29.) You can use Aero Dash to glide ride over electrified Geyser Traps without taking any damage. Very useful in games like Team Adam Grab where people use Geyser Traps to defend the room they're holding up in. Also, Winterblast can be used on Geyser Traps to get rid of them as well.

30.) Also, Aero Dash breaks you out of ELECTRO STUN. That's right, no more sitting there paralyzed when someone uses Electro on you. Use Aero Dash to break free and go crashing right into them. That will show those EG gun users who the boss is. And I don't mean Tony Danza.

31.) Keep in mind that Electro lowers your defenses by 25% for as long as you are paralyzed and remain standing still. All the more reason to keep that Aero Dash ready.

32.) If you want to learn the maps fast and effectively. You can start a private match of any kind all by yourself. It actually lets you explore the maps completely alone, a good way to walk around and learn the layout, search for hiding places, use geysers or Leg Up to jump to high places, etc.

33.) Electrified Geyser Traps and Proximity Mines work the best when you put when behind an opening and closing door, because people can't see them until they're basically right on top of them.

34.) Expert Hacker Tonic lets you hack with only one turn of the wrench, it is very fast.

35.) When you're just about to die because a body you're near has the Death Trap tonic, quickly jump up into the air. If you time it right you can actually avoid getting killed if there is no time to move away from it.

36.) When you see a vending machine that's been sabotaged by the enemy, approach it from the side, gently brush against it and then quickly jump backwards. This will trigger the bomb to fall out of it but you will not take any damage since you jumped away quickly. Then you can proceed to sabotage the vending machine for your own team.

37.) Where you hit an enemy in the body vastly changes how much damage they can take. If you feel like an enemy using the same weapon as you is killing you faster, it most likely means they're hitting you more in the head and the body. Since the Nail Gun shoots a wide spread of damage how fast it actually kills is depending on what parts of the body it happens to hit with each shot.

38.) The Fisherman and the Business man are the best characters to use to avoid head-shots. They both hunch over while they run making the trusty Elephant gun head-shot trick a little harder to use.

39.) Also, try not to use masks that make it easier for people to target your head. The Bunny Ears and the Moonface mask are two good examples of what not to wear.

40.) All characters have exactly the same hit-boxes so don't worry about whether the fatter characters make easier targets than the slimmer characters.

41.) Telekinesis is very useful on maps such as Hephaestus, there are lots of oil barrels and they are all instant kills when picked up and tossed at enemies.

42.) If you're facing off against an Elephant Gun user, shoot a geyser plasmid at them and when they come down from the air they will typically be stuck reloading for easy kills.

43.) If you want to level up fast pick up the red ADAM vials, each one is the same XP for a turret hack or enemy kill. Some of the levels have vent areas that have as many as 6 of them

    Capture the Sister hints:

44.) Do NOT be afraid to pick up the Little Sister. Every little bit you move her towards the vent works to your team's advantage. Also, PLAN YOUR ROUTE to the vent at the start of the match. This way you won't be running the wrong way once you do pick up the Sister.

45.) A good strategy is to send a teammate in as bait for the team on defense to all focus on as you then ghost into the room using Houdini and snatch up the Little Sister. By the time they realize you pulled a rope-and-dope you'll have made up some serious ground or perhaps gotten her all the way to the vent yourself.

46.) Obviously tonics like Fast Feet and Leg Up will help you immensely by giving you a big advantage against enemies chasing you when you grab the Sister. Also, Aero Dashing can put some big gaps between you and your pursuers.

47.) Concentrate on taking out the defending team's Big Daddy as soon as possible. If you take him out quickly, you'll have the rest of the match to try to capture the Sister without having to worry about Daddy.

48.) If you do have to contend with a Big Daddy guarding the Sister, just hit him with Insect Swarm. That's a quick neutralize on the biggest threat in the room. It allows you a great chance to pick up the LS, especially if the other team is too aggressive and leaves the Big Daddy by himself to guard the Sister while they move around the map.

49.) When it's your turn to be the Big Daddy, you do not need to run around looking for kills. You will rack up a ton playing safely, guarding the Little Sister. Proxy-mine all the doors and put one or two near the Little Sister as well. Then get into a good spot where you are hard to hit/see, but still have great visibility in the room.

50.) If the other team seems to be having an easy time picking up the Little Sister, take it upon yourself to guard the vent rather than guard the Sister. This will allow you to be the last line of defense against an enemy Capture and they'll be very surprised to see you standing there after they thought they made a clean break from their pursuers. A good line of defense also is to place an Electrified Geyser Trap directly on the vent. This will kill anyone who tries to rush right up to it and place the Sister in.

Great list of hints for the new guys! Looks like you put a lot if time in it.

Just a quick thing or two...
Insect swarm only takes 2 melée swings, at least for me.

Also, there's at least one map where the BD suit appears in 4 places instead of just 3. Fort Frolic. (Probably because it's one of the larger maps.)

electro-bolt stops the nailgun dead in its tracks. Leaves most NG users wide open. elecbolt also opens sliding doors instantly counters winterblasted doors

Aerodash is severely affected by winterblast.

    Here are some of mine...

Geyser Trap + Grenade Launcher (body shot) = instant kill

The best plasmid for a Grenade Launcher user is Houdini, simply go invisible get behind the person. shoot them in the back once and then shoot them again and you usually will have a kill.

I'm pretty sure it usually takes me 3 vigorous swings of my melee weapon to totally get my vision back from Insect Swarm.

But you're absolutely right about Fort Frolic. It actually contains FOUR Big Daddy spawn locations instead of the usual three.

Here's the layout of all the multiplayer maps per the Brady strategy guide:

    Edit: Whoops sorry no scans.

It displays the Big Daddy suit spawning positions for most of the maps (though it seems to have left out the spawn points on a few of them for some strange reason).

I actually thought of the jumping thing to counter the stomp since it is a shock-wave that affects you.

True, also if the big daddy is standing on something you can't avoid his stomp even if you jump, unless you too are standing on a box or something.

9.) Geyser traps can also be shocked, so that they deal massive damage. ALSO if someone gets hit with one of your Geyser Traps, they are wet for a few seconds. Shock them for a instant kill.
also if you electrify an enemies (unelectrified) trap, it becomes YOUR trap

Yeah, it probably does take 3 swings, but I guess I usually do 2 because it clears up enough for me to know what's going on, haha...even though the reticle is still non-visible.

I guess that's another tip I could add here: It's very easy to tell when someone has Resurrection equipped because, number one, they always slump to the ground in a peculiar manner. Number two, you'll notice that the game doesn't inform you that you've scored a kill. And finally, no icon pops up in the corner showing the weapon that you used to take your enemy down.

All these things point to the fact that someone has Resurrection equipped and you best stay around to put them down proper. Or just stand on them!! I love it.

It really is, it's so much more humiliating. Don't get me wrong, smacking someone who's about to resurrect in the head with a wrench has a certain je nais se quoi to it. But standing on them is the height of hilarity, it's like "whoa whoa whoa, where do you think YOU'RE goin, buddy! Nowhere! Because I'm STANDING on your face!"

By the way, great tips for the new guys and good reminders for the veterans!

    36) If you have mastered the "brushing technique" . Not only can you deactivate the trap in a vending machine. Depending on what angle you come at, you can actually grab the eve or ammo on either side quickly. Ive mastered it quite well and Ill just skim a vending machine as im passing it to get my hypo and set off the trap without hurting myself at all!

    44) Holy bejeebez. I dont know how man times I will see my moronic teammate pick up the girl while he is, idk, lets say ten feet away from the vent. And Ill watch him start running backwards to another vent he knows about and thinks.. "Oh, I guess I can put her in any vent I want???" Like C'mon, is all I can think in my head as I shoot him aimlessly in hope of him turning around and going the right way! Please plan a route and look where the destination is!

Who needs the brushing technique when you have fast feet. ;D or winter blast

To any moderator. Can you please lock this thread to the very top as it can really help people who are new to the game and would be a waste to let it disappear.

PS we are also very tired of explaining the same counters to the noob combos on other threads.

like aero dash counters EB for the EB/EG combo etc.

EDIT: also we are tired of hearing the same complaints about noob combo this and noob combo that. Since the MP is like rock paper scissors, if someone uses a technique there is another that counters <_<.

You may delete this rant as it has nothing to do with the thread after you move it.

Hahah yea it's amazing how that works, isn't it? A lot of times I'm now able to grab the item I want from a hacked vending machine (either the Eve hypo or the Ammo) by just brushing against it lightly and continuing on my way, simultaneously disarming the machine for my teammates to use.

One of the worst glitches in this game though is the one that affects the vending machines. I hate that whenever you join a match already in progress you can not trust any of the yellow lights (meaning 'unhacked) on the vending machines. These are the cause of countless unnecessary deaths so you really have to approach every single vending machine as if it's hacked when you join a game in progress. Although sometimes it's hard to keep remembering that and you will unwittingly blow yourself up at a yellow vending machine at one point or another.

That's really why I made it, it's just the things I wish someone told me as I was still working my way up the ranks. I'm still shocked when I see noobs who have no idea what Death Trap is and keep getting blown up trying to research the same enemy's corpse! And it's not their fault I suppose, there's just no way to know about these things if you haven't had experience with them yet.

I remember when i first encountered Death Trap, I thought it was an explosive that was triggered by researching bodies so I completely stopped researching my enemies altogether!

Yeah.. Death Trap was mean if you didn't know

But the person coming back from the light was the biggest WTF factor

I usually send them back into the darkness with a hammer in the face.

Death Trap was never a problem for me because I rarely have Expert Researcher equipped, so I always take a few seconds to look around and make sure there's no one behind me, then I proceed to take a picture.

The time it takes for me to look for eventual predators is usually enough for the body to blow up and me going like "oh well..."

A worse glitch with vending machines is the unregistered freeze. Several times in the last week, I have frozen an enemy vending machine, seen the frost and ice appear, yet when I attempt to hack it, I get Blowed Up Real Good!

I havent seen this sort of glitch until this last week, but maybe the averages are just now catching up with me.
