The second X-COM is basicly just the first X-COM under water, but you really should play the first game! As much as I liked Terror from the Deep regardless, I would suggest that you should then play X-COM Apocalypse (the third one) after X-COM1. The 4th and 5th X-COM games don't count...
The changes between X-COM 1 and Apocalypse are rather interesting, many liked it... many didn't. I still prefer X-COM1, although I loved Apoc as well, but it would be good to have exposure to these two X-COM titles before the new one hits.
The original is an amazing game no doubt.. But ive been finding it so hard to go back and play it with the level of graphics it has... Great in its day, but I do find it hard... There ive said it, im a graphics snob! I love innovation...
But anyone who hasnt played the original cover to cover simply must... I think it will make your experience of Firaxis's new version all the sweeter!
This thread is like opening a time capsule.
Amid all of the controversy and turmoil of the April 2010 announcement, there were folks who gathered together to heap praise on the original X-COM games.
If you haven't played it, definitely give it a try.
Play it, and try not to be a graphics snob.
What I'll say is cheap, but it's a good way to get good results.
On every mission I have two save games. One called "Beginning of Turn" and one called "During Turn". Overwrite "Beginning of Turn" every time you had the best possible results on a turn (you killed aliens, no soldiers of yours got killed or badly injured, etc.). "During Turn" should be overwritten whenever you A) Kill an alien, B) got shot by an alien's attack of opportunity but didn't get a scratch, and C) something beneficial happens with no possible repercussions.
Again, it's the cheap way of playing, but also, the one with the best results.
As for aliens sniping you, whenever you get off the skyranger, attempt some sort of cover, i.e. hiding behind the Skyranger's wheels, or something.
/\ The way mentioned above is something that takes the fun out of the game.
Impossible, since X-COM was never truly abandoned. The fact that it's all available on Steam (for a very reasonable price) is proof of that.
Let me provide a friendly, but very strong, word of advice to everyone: tread lightly around the subject of "abandonware" on this forum. The most common definition is "something I downloaded illegally because I couldn't purchase it at the time", which is piracy. And we have a zero tolerance policy for that. As X-COM proves, the copyright was held throughout, and the software was made available again when possible. I sincerely hope that any real fan of the series who might have such copies went ahead and purchased legal ones as soon as they were available.
The Hammer of the Law has been dropped!
I still have the 3.5" floppies of X-Com. =) And the manual.
I have to use DosBox to slow my PC down to play it tho.
Can't wait for the reboot...
You reminded me of something I bumped into one day.. I found the thread.

The third post says the game can be sped up or down with CRTL-F11/F12 in game. If it works, it might be easier for you.
I'd play, but I can't seem to get ahold of it (other than Steam, I keep hearing). So. I'll just have to wait 4 months. *sobs*

One day I was at an auction house and there it was a chest with the original boxes of X-Com:EU, TFTD, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Heretic, Leisure Suit Larry, Space Quest and some other classics I can't recall at the moment, the kicker was that the whole box was sold for $3. I missed the opening so couldn't bid, all because I went for coffee before...missed out on a box of history. Dammit
Let's put it this way your not a petrol head till you have owned an Alfa Romeo in the same way as you are not a gamer untill you have played X-COM. It's just that simple. It doesn't get voted the best game of all time for nothing.
I think you can get it on amazon, too. I bought it on steam, since they make it easy to run and its worth it even though I have 2 or three copies of the originals on CD. I think I still have the old shareware demo disk from 1994 that I picked up for free at a Software Etc back when they did such things. I must have played that demo map a hundred+ times.
Thanks, Finn (and Dei!). The problem wasn't getting it up to an ideal speed. It was that certain sections of the game would slow down severely, but other would run fine (or speed up). So I kept having to raise or lower the value as I played. It was a big detriment to my enjoyment (not that it stopped me from logging dozens of hours as soon as I dowloaded it, LOL).
One of these days I'll give it another go. I built this system myself about 5 years ago, and upgraded it slightly since, so it's not a piece of junk. It should run the original just fine.
the TUs system really didnt work that well with the huge 8 floors hundreds of rooms (which you had to search throughly because you needed to eliminate ALL aliens) ship missions. I guess a real time with pause combat system like that of RPGs like Baldurs Gate would work better with HUGE maps...
the largest maps from XCOM were the base mission maps, and they were HALF the size of most maps from TFTD!! Oh, and Cydonia was also "8 floors", but really, the top floor was all open air, so it was not REALLY 8 levels, like ship missions.
