Has anybody ever figured out what this In-Game Discussion Forum is all about? Supposedly it's for less than "hardcore strategy" questions and issues, but to be honest I don't think I've recognized any real pattern to the threads here. I think it's just the place where people like to post something when they don't know where else to post it!
look what i found on google

like threads about anything under the sun... or nothing at all...
I finished day 3 of my biking trek to lose 25 lbs... 45 miles so far... only 1830 miles to go... piece of cake...![]()

I'm not an optimist like the author but it was interesting nonetheless...
Yup, I've heard the same thing about WWII. But there are always counter-examples. Some people argue that Iraq has been bad for our economy. I'm not making a case against the war, but just saying that it's a little one-sided and maybe cynical to claim (not that you were doing this perhaps) that we go to war mainly to make a profit. I'm not your history teacher, of course, but I bet he or she could cite some historical examples of empires stretching themselves thin because of too many wars.

Original HGB quote stimulating the above:
"today a friend said ww2 got us out of the great depression.."
Sorry, I'm going to nitpick a bit especially since I can do so with impunity now...
I think asserting that WWII helped the USA out of the Great Depression is valid. I don't think that necessarily implies the primary reason the USA went into WWII was to get out of the Great Depression. Nor does it imply there are/were no other way(s) to get out of the Great Depression. In short, I agree with your assertions but I don't think saying WWII helped get the USA out of the Depression is contradictory to your assertions either.

I'm pretty certain that America's involvement was financially motivated, at least partially. They had a lot of money tied up in the allies. If Germany conquers Britain, suddenly all that investment disappears.
But of course, it's one of many reasons. I don't think any of us could pinpoint the exact reason your country joined the war.
there were a few options...
The obvious ones notwithstanding (Ie, the claims as to why the states went from arms supplier to direct combat).
as per the US/great depression:
While it may not exactly be a direct link (Let's get the world to go to war so that we can make stuff), the war did have a direct effect on the economy. Factories were started up and at more than 100% capacity, meaning more jobs, meaning more people getting money to spend, and they did.
Ultimately, being the arms dealer at first really helped getting that industrial base moving.
After that, well, adding a million people to the military does effectively help the economy somewhat.
The Military-Industrial Complex benefits from wartime spending. Not so much the rest of the economy. (yes there are benefits that cross over, as in more money spent, but in general other areas can be negatively affected).
the one part that gets ignored a lot is that governments go very deep in debt during/after wars never making the money back. The private sector keeps the money. (one could argue about taxes made, but it never makes up for the amount spent).
So in the end... the MIC/Big Oil wins in wars, everyone else gets stuck with a big bill.
companies like haliburton have absolutely perfected this process. anyone seen what they charge per meal for soldiers over in iraq and afganistan? its a crazy amount and whats really bad is our military never had any troubles feeding itself for hundreds of years.
Did you even read HGB's original link? I didn't think so. Nothing in your response pertains in the slightest to the orignal context of my conversation with HGB. It's really not so much that you can act or speak with impunity, but only with hypocrisy. Perhaps if you respect my desire to be left alone for the time being, we won't have a stupid flame war. But I guess you don't know how to give people space when it's suggested via PM that that would be best. I'd honestly rather not talk with you right now, but will do so if needs be.

I don't think a .JPEG w/arrows constitutes much of a read, or much of a "context" or "conversation".
If you don't want to talk, then don't already. But public comments are public, are fair game for public comment, & in this case completely unrelated. I can remove the "Zef" reference though going forward easily enough. However, attempted inflammatory behavior emboldened by a few drinks at the airport bar, a few joints perhaps, & maybe some recent hanky-panky will get you nowhere... who knows maybe you just got off an airplane before you typed this...
amusing nonetheless...![]()

Just in the USA because their system is so poorly designed. And er anywhere they have influence...
I always find it really funny when thailand buys a pack of subs or NZ buys a big war ship when it is almost impossible to imagine a scenario where they would be of any use at all, and the military just goes on about mainitaining relations with the US or about how they are such a bargain. geezzzz...
Maybe part of that is the war profiteering that went on in WWI and WWII ie that the US economy became great by arms dealing so it cant bring itself to stop doing it.
anyway as to profiting from wars - I heard that the rwandans made quite a nice profit from their war with the surounding countries (... genocide aside) because they captured diamond mines.
And in terms of getting one out of the depression you dont have to have a war - that is jsut a really inefficient way of doing the same thing you could achieve with any big motivating project. Although finding one that gets people working together could be hard.

Germany is conducting a soccer clinic right now in the World Cup w/Australia as the unfortunate student(s). 4-0 currently. Ouch!

soccer is a game where 22 people chase a ball around for 90 minutes and in the end the germans win.
Germans also have the easy side of the draw - look at the horror run that teams like portugal have to face to get to the finals...
This thread is my favorite. All the good topics, good debates, and occasional flaming, such an interesting read. 40 pages, ranging from US political manuevering, mind-body connections, origins of life, universal laws vs psuedo potentiality, turns out this is a pretty important thread zef, i think we can all agree on that much.
oh and btw, ready for some debate?

Paraguay scores at 38th minute against Italy w/header off of set play! Paraguay leading 1-0! Italy's players look stunned.

lol, brazil almost tied with north korea...
looks like a lot of the 'big' teams are having a slow start.
the world cup is a boring one for now. nearly all teams seem scared to risk anything. one of the few opportunities to be excited about being german.
and all these terrible vuvuzeelas. the stadiums aren't filled up. i'm beginning to believe it was a mistake to arrange the world cup in africa.
The tickets were beteween (I'm not sure) 120-150 euro, they reduce it by half to fill the stadium. Seems like a bad math, who can afford multiple 60-75 euro tickets... Yeah the trumpet are annoying even on tv I can't imagine what it is in the stadium... For now, I' ve liked how South Korea and Chile have played. The big team hasn't been at their best, but it was only the first game and they haven't played that many game together... It will get better I'm sure.
in the tv they said the tickets cost 45€. that may be too much for the average south african but it isn't for europeans. the problem is that a flight ticket costs more than 1000€ at the moment. anyway, i thought at least english and german fans would fill the stadiums. in the 2006 world cup in germany, the congestion was incredible. it was practically impossible to order tickets and, still, they were more expensive than in south africa.Originally Posted by SVPM
south korea played a decent game. but i miss some offensive play like the germans'. i don't know the reason for this aloofness and i really don't long for more games like france vs. uruguay or japan vs. cameroon.
Yeah but its the world cup. I love it. I drew NZ in the office sweep stake (2,500 - 1) no chance.
The Germans will do well (they always do - they know how to win). SOanish are loosing at the moment.
England well - what a rubbish performance against the Americans. We should be sent hime in shame...,....
That's what I meant for the ticket price... I prefered the 10-20 can$ for the World Cup U20 in Mtl 2-3 years ago...
I didn't saw the Germany game I had my physiotherapy at that hours. Only 2 things to do in my whole week and it's at the same time of some of the best game...
