I don't know if you guys have seen this, but you can check the popularity rating of Bioshock at Gamestats. Unfortunately, as of now, Bioshock is only ranked 27 in the games for 360 and 20 for PC.

Why doesnt this surprise me!-Because NO ONE knows about Bioshock!-Raveness was right, its the video game eqivalent of Fight Club!-Whats worse is that Tenchu is rated above it!......

Well, let's hope it will change.
Anyway, I'm doing my very best to spread the word in Hungary, not only as a news editor but also as a humble member of some popular forums too.I hope others are doing this too in their home country.
I don't know for sure but I think here most of the gamers who read online/offline press know about BS and the majority loves it.

I'd say look for it to climb when near release...or not, depending on what games get released in the same month.
The trouble is,by the time the publicity machine really gets up to speed,Halo 3 will have been released and it will be hopelessly lost in the fray. And its got nothing to do with how good it is either, in relation to those other games, its the publics perception of it,and right now,its either indifference or ignorance, neither of which bode too well.![]()
I sort've liked Halo: CE but I didn't like Halo 2 it was just a huge let down because IMO the single player story was lacking and but that could be said about Halo 1 I also don't like walking down Corrider after Corrider that all look the same and then I get into an open area then I don't know where to go since everything looks the same (but the main reason why people buy Halo is the multiplayer so they might not care about it)
Main reason why I like Halo is the story, characters, setting, etc. Yes, the level design does blow chunks on some parts (The Library level...) but I think overall it's just awesome. Great controls and the spectacular multiplayer is just icing. Very sweet icing that could never give me a toothache.
But yeah, I would say too that a lot of people just like it for the multi, but usually the halo games are the best experience on LIVE.
for me, halo is like a disney film. They are pretty well made in every aspect, but they lack deepness and disturbing stuff... they are all too shiny and predictable.
Halo's story lacks depth? Hah.
The cast look like sesame street rejects? Hah.
I'll agree that halo isn't scary, but it's not meant to be. I think you're confusing the sci-fi genre with the horror one, Halo's story isn't designed to creep you out or disturb you, it's designed to run like an action film with real backstory where the plot is centered around you fighting for the survival of your species. If you try to attach false pretenses to the game of course your reaction is going to be "Bah, this sucks", but if you try to remember what the game is, and play it for what it is, then I'm sure you'd be more impressed.
A fair argument as always Jeff,Obviously it doesnt suck, and as you say perhaps I'm not appreciating the ethic of the games,My son has pre-orderd Halo 3,so perhaps I'll enjoy it more than the first two games.I do enjoy horror games, which is probably why the Halo's dont rock my world,as well as the rest of you,but hey, enjoy the games you play!![]()

I totally have to agree with Jeff. Just because some of you haven't played any of the Halo games (or just plain didn't like them) doesn't mean you should bash the hell out of them. Sure they are sometimes linear and might lack the depth of other games of that particular genre (like Bioshock), but some games are just like that. Sometimes you just want too SHOOT stuff!
Oh, and as for popularity, WHO CARES? WE know that Bioshock is going to be an excellent game, and WE are the ones who will enjoy it!

I completely agree on one level, in that I'm probably going to love this game no matter how commercial successful it is (a lot of my favourite games have suffered poor sales).
On the other hand, in today's world of 2 second attention spans where disposable crap reigns supreme, it's always good to see intelligent thoughtful games (or films, books & music for that matter) perform well. It's rewarding for the creators, and reminds the mass-purveyors of mindless turdwash that there's a "thinky-thinky" market out there![]()
I think halo's just going to go off in different directions from here, Halo Wars has already been confirmed (an RTS) and there's rumour of a cinematic game. So I think they're going to abandon the FPS end after 3, afterall, the games tag line happens to be "finish the fight"
yes, but since halo has always been touted as a trilogy, I believe "finish the fight" to be a metaphor for the closing of this chapter in the halo universe. There are a ton more stories to be told and they'll be done in differing forms, such as Halo Wars.
Well, everything can be reduced into a matter of tastes. For example, in the sci-fi genre you could say Fantastic 4 is a better movie than Blade Runner, if you can appreciate it as an action film with real backstory where the plot is centered around 4 superheroes saving the world. But honestly, that just can't convince my inner-masterpiece-sensor that is just as good as Blade Runner, I will always like the second more, and more than just liking it, I respect it more for many reasons, beggining with the fact that one is made with the purpose of selling toys and making children buy mcdonalds happyboxes and the other is made out of pure and beautiful inspiration. Halo it's more like fantastic 4... although it has some real inspiration now and then... but also does fantastic 4...
I do think halo is an entretaining game though... but it just couldn't wake any love for it in me. Appart from the beautiful gregorian chant of the titles...

Actually.it matters a great deal whether Bioshock is popular,if it flounders, publishers wont be willing to take risks with developers who are looking to innovate and experiment.Wheras,if it succeeds,it could do wonders for a pretty tired industry.Bioshock is a gamble, lets hope its one that pays off.
just remember we're still a ways off from release (3 months today, WOO!) and you are the most hardcore of all the Rapturians out there.
more will come, have no fear.
we cant be doing that bad becuse bioshock is almost at a 90% right now its at 89.8% thats not far.![]()
and is this a big daddy???![]()

Thats great, and I know that you really appreciate our support,I've been playing games for a long time, and have been aching for something like Bioshock to come along for years, but theres only so much a handful of hardcore fans can do to spread the word.
In the city which I live, probably one of the largest in the UK,the gamestores have little or no interest in the game, not just because of the looming shadow of Halo 3,but because of a general lack of exposure. In fact, one store was already discussing its trade in value!-not a good sign.
I want Bioshock to succeed for many reasons, one of which is what it can do for games developers in the future, give them the confidence to explore new possibilities and take this tired industry forward a notch or two.![]()
That is exactly what LOST did for television. It allowed for a show such as HEROES to be produced whereas nothing like that could ever happen before.
"You want us to create a show where you actually treat the audience with some intelligence and not feed them the lowest common denominator? Blashphemy!"
I'd like Bioshock to do this for the videogame genre. (I think that's why a Bioshock fanboy angel dies everytime Levine says "it's just a shooter!") I call the thing that video games are lacking "soul" for lack of a better term. I want games with more soul. Levine, with all his elitist pretentions (j/k), can deliver.
-
Edit: I'm a demographic the game industry neither knows or cares about. I'm the genre-buster. If you have the same tired repeated genre that I've already played before - I don't want it. I will always seek to purchase something that pushes the envelope and changes gaming as we know it. If there were more like me then producers might be more willing to take risks (and risks might be more likely to pay off.) Sadly, they don't.

I recently heard it described as a"World War 2 FPS in which you have to shoot fish people and are chased by little girls and men in diving suits" It makes me want to.....
SCREAM!!!
I heard people on another forum saying that they didn't want it because they thought it didn't have modern weopons and they think it takes place during the 1950's but it actually takes place after that the same people actually called it a World War 2 game even though World War 2 ended in 1945.

ah yes the misinformed masses because the weapons in Halo are modern...... just for example lol cause just yesterday i found a neat little plasma rifle with an endless nuke ion battery in my local Gun shop...... people who only care about the looks of the weapons and not about gameplay should just stick to talking about CounterStrike
Exactly.
I really think thats why we need a demo,to show the massess just how cool this game and its weapons are.Screenshots, podcasts, articles ect are all great, but they dont give that unique insight into a game and whether you want it,the way actually playing it does. This issue could be a real deal breaker.
Quality always rests upon the mass of quantity. The money that simple, easy, consumable entertainment earns provides the backing of the great, thoughtful and deep niche experiences in all forms of entertainment medium. Quite frankly I don't see anything wrong with that. It becomes a sort of measuring stick, a pH litmus paper to determine the state of intellectually, philosophically & spiritually edifying content as it relates to the rest.
If Bioshock does well financially, then we're all happy. But honestly, should it do REALLY WELL? We all harp about how things are dumbed-down and streamlined into idiocy for the mindless hamburger masses to spend their hard earned cash on.
The state of creative affairs are not going to change between now and three months (maybe come November 2008), and Irrational has people with the wherewithal to realize that. They are most likely working on a cash-cow title to backup the core of the business with.
wow well said raveness *golf applause* well said. Irrational does seem to be the home of the "thinking man's (or woman's) game"
As long as bioshock makes enough profits for a new game or add on (and for the devs to take a vacation) it will be fine but if it hits a money flow like oblivion then we can expect a dumbed down game next.
'Halo isn't that good'
FINALLY. I thought I was the only person that felt it was hyped up way too much. It's just the main character from doom-suit with plain weapons. I know too many people that worship Halo, but it's just an average fps that has good online capability. Big Whoop.
why is it that people never tack on the phrase "in my opinion" anymore.
my comment reflects more on the definitive statements people like to make. reference specifically to terosx "halo is an average fps" becomes a much, much more true statement when you change it to "in my opinion, halo is an average fps".
