    Arrow BioShock vs System Shock

I loved SS2. It's a classic! I dumped many hours into the game a long time ago.

But my question is regarding BioShock. With the information that you have gathered from Interviews, Previews, and other various articles -Will BioShock, as an overall package and gaming experience, be better or more enjoyable than SS2?

Please give your reasons for your answer.

I think what made System Shock so good was the atmosphere. It was spot-on creepy! And so far, from what I've seen Bioshock could, quite possibly, be even better (or at least on par with) System Shock. But I might be stretching it a bit and merely basing this on the Next-Gen graphics.

The gameplay looks pretty tight, though, and the storyline has my curiosity maxed out! (I might be speaking for everybody on that one.) We won't really know for sure until we actually get to experience it first hand.

It's safe to say we're all in for one HELL of a ride!

For me, System Shock 2 wins out on the setting & genre. I definitely prefer cyberpunk on board a starship gone to hell as opposed to an underwater dystopia with a 50's look to it, but I'm splitting hairs. Both titles look to have their strong points, but ultimately this is pointless speculation until I've played Bioshock.

Deus Ex is better at delivering the sci-fi, cyberpunk mood for me. (And basically in everything, it's my favourite game. )

Since the setting is completely different, I can only compare the gameplay and the atmosphere. And from what I've seen/read/heard from BioShock, it seems to be better in both ways. Though there are some more things that I should see before making a final decision (inventory and interaction system for example). But it does look better than SS2 so far.

hmm that's a hard question... since SS2 was released 8 years ago. gameplay/graphics... just everything has changed over the years, so you can't really compare it... i like both scenarios, but BioShock is my favourite one! art deco in an underwater utopia/dystopia is just godlike

I think Bioshock will be better.

Although the settings are different physically, they still share many elements (player is isolated, trying to figure out what's happened, most communication/help from NPC's coming in the form of audio logs, ability to customise your own player via "enhancements", ability to revisit levels, etc) and the dev team will have an extra 8 years of technological advancements to help them craft just as absorbing an atmosphere!

Think of all the extra processing power for AI, soundcard improvements (I have a X-Fi Fatality ), memory increases and extra eye candy that have become commonplace since System Shock 2!!

But like everyone else, I'll just have to wait and play it to see if it lives up to our hopes!!

Yeah, I think I've played through DX seven or eight times by now. Great game.

In fact, I wonder how many of the forumites are big DX fans-- I wouldn't be surprised if the number were at /least/ 30%.

That's an interesting question warcrow, but I don't really think I know enough about BioShock to really give a good answer. I really, really love SS2 (just started up another run through, incidentally ), so it's already got a mile head start ahead of BioShock.

However I really like what I'm hearing of the general design of the latter game; they really seem to be taking the approach of improving SS2's basic design. As an FPS I don't actually think SS2 is that great - Deus Ex managed to show how the hybrid approach should have been done, and BioShock definitely looks to improve it even further. But as an RPG and horror/adventure game SS2 shines, and yet again BS appears to be taking some very wise steps in ensuring those aspects are better too. So if the guys are able to pull of exactly what they have set out to, BS should be better than SS2 in terms of gameplay experience.
Raveness mentions SS2's cyberpunk/sci fi setting which I too love a lot, but retro/steampunk is pretty much second best so it's all good.

I agree, and I'll admit to being a little dissapointed when it was announced that Bioshock wouldn't be set in the same universe as SHODAN (damn you EA, you money-sucking sons of... Grrr!). But in all honesty I'm glad Irrational are trying something new. The sci-fi genre is pretty much done to death nowadays. This ruined-underwater-art-deco-utopia is - as far as I know - entirely original to video-games.

If only somebody would remake System Shock 1 though... *mutters something unprintable about EA*

Yea, it's really tough to judge because most of us have not really played BS just yet.

But I have alot of faith in Ken and his team in that they can create something monumental here, and that could probably be better than SS2.

I believe Bioshock has strong potential to be just as good if not better than System Shock2. Most of that confidence comes from the track record of Irrational Games. If they continue along the path they have already travelled, using great gameplay matched with excellent storytelling, then today's standard of enhanced graphics and realistic physics will only add to that great gaming experience.

I have great hope for Bioshock and hope it lives up to our expectations. I'm playing System Shock2 right now to kinda get me in the mood for Bioshock. For being released in 1999, it sure is way ahead of its time. Here's to Irrational's success!

I would really love to replay SS1 remake in say... Source.

I have to say that I liked Deus Ex more than SS2 because of the sheer scope of the game - and the way it blemded RPG element. While 'alone in a place gone to hell' setting is nice, I still prefer a world where I can interact with inhabitants.

I have to agree as well with the comments made about Deus Ex. Both Deus Ex and System Shock2 had very well written stories and plots. That kind of depth in a game is kinda rare these days. The story is very engrossing and compelling. Playing System Shock2 and reading the Audio logs made by the NPCs is almost like playing a separate game within the game. I looked forward to finding my next Audio log just as much as finding my next new weapon or supply of Upgrade Modules. I really hope Bioshock has this level of depth in gameplay and story development.

The trailers, previews and interviews for SS2 or Deus Ex were not nearly as interesting as they are for Bioshock. And soon, we'll actually be able to compare the games too.

[Godot wishes someone would bump the thread about Deus Ex, instead. ]

How long does it take to beat SS2? I am having a hard enough time trying to figure out how to run all the graphic updates.

It really does depend on how you play the game. You can skip reading the audio logs and some of the other options you have that add to the depth of the game. That would allow you to complete it in a couple of days like a typical shooter. However, trust me, it's not your typical shooter. In fact, after playing through it once choosing a certain Military training path, you'll more than likely play through it again as I plan to, so you can select a different training path.

This reminds me to check on the High-Definition overhaul for Deus Ex.

In 1999 (SS2) and 2000 (DE), there weren't yet streaming videos, podcasts, etc. If there were interviews, they would be text with maybe a screenshot or two. There was far less media coverage on games overall.

True, but it's still better to compare unripened apples with ripened apples than apples with oranges.

    ***SPOILER*** SS2 Question

***Please don't read if you've never played SS2 and plan to.***

Can anyone who has played SS2 tell me how the game ends? After I defeat Shodan, I'm just taken back to the main menu screen, no prologue, ending rolling of credits or anything. Is there something wrong with my ending? Thx.

The ending is definitely of 'SHODAN will be back' variety, opening a lead-in for System Shock 3. Will it ever be made? Who knows...

It certainly "looks better" any game made today almost certainly would. However, glad to see someone else brought up the obvious comparison to Deus Ex. I actually always hated the kind of Art Deco look, but now that I saw just the whole world that has been created for this game, the perfect fusion of mood and elements, I just can't wait to stare at the pixilated glory.

I don't think its fair to say one is better than the other. SS2 was an exceptional experience when it was new. In fact in terms of playability and the integration of plot and advancement, it is still unsurpassed. I think Bioshock will expand on alot of the qualities that made the originals great. It will be an overall improved experienced and will be extraordinary no matter what. I think as a complete experience it will be comparable but probably better than the originals. Especially if the game is truly built off the fundementals, and will essentially take everything to a new level!

Well DUH! Shodan traveled back in time, and manipulated Ryan into becoming the architect of Rapture, and all the inherent problems of society were caused by SHODAN, who secretly controls the world in the distant past. Which will be the major plot thread for Bioshock 2 which will involve...time travelling!!!

I made an account to just post on this thread as it is something I think should be express.

    System Shock > Bioshock
    System Shock 2 > Bioshock

    1) Bioshock is a watered down console-ised version of System Shock(1-2)
    2) Bioshock is shallow
    3) Bioshock was made only to make money
    4) The story is rather ridiculous--and becomes boring and predictable
    5) Graphics were its only selling point
    6) The story
    7) The idea and art style behind the game although awesome was wasted
1a) because it was first and foremost targeted at console gamers..
1^a) console gamers are usually pretty damn naive
    8) The game becomes redundant and the story mechanics become redundant as well.. ohh you got to this point with goal A( say it is carrying a red gem) well now this happened .. lets use the same story mechanic to get them to carry a blue gem to this point.. whoa we can do this all day .. there are tons of colors WEEE!
    9) The controller
    10) Not intended to have a modding community
    11) I just don't get why the damn plane ends up crashing into the tunnel after you had spent unknown amounts of time before you get to that point.. I mean how many damn planes crashed.. there had to be another after you did..
    12) No one is special, maybe special ed.

-- These may not make sense.. may overlap but I just don't care..

Fact - Games released on a console could/would be better on a PC ..

Also Console games may look better than PC games when the Console is released ... but after 1-3 months they're outdated...

And I thought console gamers were all about the graphics!
And I thought console gamers were all about the story?
And I thought the big thing about consoles is the community? -- then why the hell does Dragon Age not have any multi...
And I thought that games weren't made to just make money?
And I thought that Console gamers were more skilled (haha laughable)
And I thought that using a mouse and keyboard wasn't considered an exploit?
And I thought using a console gave you skills that would translate to a career?

There is plenty more... argue with this post and you're wrong.. sure some of the things I have stated are opinion.. and "your" reply disagreeing with me is a console gamers opinion... but yet you have hardly any grounds to base your opinion on..

You haven't really played a "Real", whatever that means, game..

You have been playing -- console games.. or in other words.. Gaymes.

I have a ps3 and a ps2 and guess what I am posting this on my PC, which will stomp a ps3/xbox360 into the ground..

I bought the PS3 to play Killzone 2 and Metal Gear and after doing so I will settle with.. my ps3 is a blu-ray player..

Sure computers are more expensive.. and yes you can upgrade them... but it does not cost 2k to get a computer that can do what a PS3/Xbox360 can.. haha.. you could spend 400 and get a computer that could do what a PS3/Xbox360 could and be able to post a reply to this message! without pressing buttons and searching a character list.. sure you have that keyboard and you reply to me.. but are you using that for anything else but replying to me?

Another thing.. consoles even the playing field? laughable too.. because there are plenty of players with less desirable PC's doing better than that guy that has that 2-4k system.. even using that fancy 4000dpi mouse and keyboard that has macros..

So I still don't see how that makes any sense.. if you are not good at a game its your fault.. you the player.. not the hardware 98% of the time..

and btw.. there is always someone better than you.. and there is undoubtedly someone that is going to reply and make more sense than me.

but he won't be a console gamer...

PS get a job, save some cash, and buy something you need. -- yeah a PC

Herzog Zwei was a great console game and !!!!

Marvel vs Capcom 2 on the DREAMCAST!!@#!@#-- probably going to better than the PS3 release.. I still have my DC+MVC2 go away

Classic case of a nerd who's upset that console's are taking over the gaming industry. I don't know who you are, what grudge you have, but keep off these forums if you're just going to cause trouble.

There are many ways to voice an opinion without being insulting about it; don't be rude.

    -------

On another note; would you recommend the System Shock games? I haven't actually played them before picking up BioShock, and don't really know anything about them.

I am not trying to be insulting I am just stating my opinion and how I see things.

    Really consoles are taking over?

I seem to forget that this is the state of things?-- If I was a console gamer I might just swallow that and believe it!

Wait you didn't give any evidence?

    Shenanigans!

You must be the "Nerd" with all the answers. Please enlighten me! I can be persuaded just like anyone else. I am here to learn..

    Why so defensive?

I seem to forget that this is the state of things?-- If I was a console gamer I might just swallow that and believe it!

Wait you didn't give any evidence?

    Shenanigans!

You must be the "Nerd" with all the answers. Please enlighten me! I can be persuaded just like anyone else. I am here to learn..

    Why so defensive?

Don't turn this into a flame warm. Simply go into your local Gamestop and tell me how big the section for PC games is.

And you're coming onto a BIOSHOCK forum, insulting the game and calling it shallow, when it has a pretty big cult following. How do you think you're going to be received when calling the game shallow and insulting console gamers?

I suppose you're part of the cult, therefore I cannot argue with you.. You will never think outside of your own "cult" opinions.

I am not here to start a flame war with you.. I would just like to see something in your replys I will not forget after I read it.

BTW-- I am pretty sure that games are going the digital distribution route.. and yes consoles will follow-- so your argument holds no water..

I want to know why you think Bioshock is such a good game! If I missed something during my play through on the PC. I will go back and see what your'e talking about.

The reason I loved Bioshock is because it's unlike anything I've ever played before.

The ideas (to me) behind ADAM and everything behind the abilities are completely original (haven't played SS2, but I hear its identical), so it was a refreshing breath of air for me after playing games like COD for ages.

The whole storyline and the history of Rapture puts me in awe. Yes, most games have a backstory, but not to the extent that Rapture has. Rapture's storyline goes years back before the game even starts. The way the story unfolds is done masterfully, and the twist in the game, for players who are new to the game, is a huge shock (if they have no previous knowledge as to what's going on).

The fact that all of the splicers, and even the little sisters and big daddies had lives before we see them as enemies is an interesting idea in and of itself. The idea that someone who can live such a normal life can become a psychotic cold-blooded killer is a fun angle that the developers worked with; it really gave the game depth.

I could go on for a while about why I love this game, but I don't think you'll accept what I'm saying at all.

The problem I think you had with the game is that you tried to guess what was going to happen, and if you guessed correctly you criticize the game for being too "predictable". Just go along with it and play the game, let them tell you the story, and don't try to figure things out until after your first playthrough.

Protip for tRens: Don't force yourself to hate a game. Especially because you can't stand to share a game with other formats.
I'm not a huge fan of reading through flame walls just so I can close a two year old thread.
