BioShock Story (fanfic)
Doug sat his desk, his eyes fixated on the stack of papers before him but his mind was in a different place. He thought about if he didn't work 10 hour days at his architecture firm, he thought about if he had a social life, lots of friends, a girlfriend, but most importantly, Doug thought about what his lfe would be like if he never came to Rapture. As he daydreamed about marching into his bosses office and saying he quit straight to his face, the intercom on his desk buzzed.
His bosses secretary, Ms. Fletcher, spoke over the intercom"Mr. Reda, Mr. Thomas wants you in his office."
Doug sighed. "Now?" he asked.
"Now." she replied.
Doug got up from his desk and began walking. It was his daily stroll to his bosses office. On his way he looked around at his coworkers, most of the he couldn't stand. They were all generally unfriendly or ignored him, but he hated the receptionist the most, she was a cheery, briht, red headed woman who always treated Doug like he was a child. Whenever he asked for a form or just a simple question, she would always talk down to him and walk him through every step of the way. That wasn't the single reason, it was because she was always on the phone talking to "clents" but Doug always found it wierd that she would end every conversation with them with "I love you.".
Doug turned the corner to his bosses office and walked up to Ms. Fletchers desk, just outside his bosses office. If anything, Doug enjoyed going to his bosses office because he gotnto see Ms. Fletcher. She was pretty, brunnette, and was around the same age as Doug. But even though Doug liked her, the feeling wasn't mutual, he didn't even know her first name, and it didn't seem like she wanted to tell him.
"Afternoon, Ms. Fletcher." Doug said, hoping to make small talk.
"Hi Doug." she quickl replied barely looking at him.
"Do you know why Mr. Thomas wants to see me?" he asked.
"I don't know, he's inside." she said, pointing her pen behind her at the door to his office.
"Hey, do you want to do something after work like go to a bar maybe?" As he said the words he wished he could take them back
Ms. Fletcher looked at him "No, no, I'm sorry it's just that I don't go to bars and I'm gonna be really busy with all this work." she said pointing to all the papers on her desk "Sorry."
Doug stood their for a few seconds, trying to come up with something to say to her. He knew what he wanted to say bit not how to say it. He gave up a walked into his bosses office. He walked in, as the door closed behind him he asked "You wanted to see me, Mr Thomas"
"Stay there, Doug." he said as he walked over to him. His boss was in his mid thirties and had a red beard.
"I need you to go to Sinclair Scrap Metals and take this order." he handed him a form for some material for some building project that would never happen
"Ok, I'll get right on that." Doug said unenthusiastically.
"Hey, hey." Mr. Thomas said, poking at him "Don't mess this up, we need to do this project to keep us afloat!"
With that, Doug left his office and head to the bathysphere station. On his way out he heard a voice call out to him.
"Hey Doug!"
He turned around, it was his friend Pat. Pat was his only friend in his office and in Rapture, he was a big, but soft spoken guy in his late twenties. He was always friendly and full of optimism.
"Hey Doug, are you going to Sinclair?" he asked
"Yeah."
"While you're there can you do that little favor for me...?" he asked
"Oh sure no problem." Doug said with a smile. Pat had been dreaming of building his ow little part of Rapture and would ask for Dougs help whenever he went to Sinclair scrap metals. Whenever Doug would go to Sinclair scrap metals, Pat would have Doug buy a few extra girders beams and rivets. And all the leftover material from prior projects handed over to more capeable companies like Wales & Wales would go into PAts building. It made Pat happy and brought the company a bit closer to collapse with every visit, which made Doug happy.
"Thanks man, you're the best. Hey, after you're done why don't you leete at Harry's bar and I'll buy you a drink."
"Hey thanks, but you know I don't drink." Doug said. Pat had given hims this offer about twenty times before.
"Ah, I know, I just wanted to see if you'd like to have one."
"Yeah I'll be there for sure." he said heading out. "Oh hey, I almost forgot.Do you know what day it is? I don't have a calender"
"Oh yeah it's March 22nd."
"Huh, it's my birthday. I almost missed my own birthday." Doug said half bewildered. He was 22 today.
"Hey well whaddya know. We'll celebrate at the bar. See ya then Doug!"
"See ya Pat." Doug said as he headed out.
He barely made it to the bathysphere in time, but he got there. On his way over to Sinclair scrap metals he shared his bathsphere with a family new to Rapture, the parents polietly sat down and watched their children look around in amazement. The childrens reactions made Doug smile. They were so full of optimism, to them Rapture was a limitless playground, where they could do anything and everything. As Doug left the bathysphere at the Sinclair station he realized how much he envied those kids, to them Rapture alwas full of mystery and wonder, to Doug it was his office the bar and his apartment. Although he felt miserable Doug held onto the slightest belief that his life was going to turn around.
(Sorry it's so long. I know it might be a bit boring but there will be some more interesting stuff coming soon, that is of you like this)

After Sinclair scrap metals, Doug went to Harrys bar and searched for Pat. The bar smelled liked smoke and was very crowded. In the crowd, Doug saw most of his coworkers but no sign of Pat.
"Hey Doug! Doug! Over here!" Pat was at the bar stand. Doug pulled up a stool and sat down. The bar tender walked up and took their drinks
"What'll it be." he asked
"I'll have a beer, and my friend'll have a...."
"Just a cola." Doug said. The bar tender looked at him and walked away. Dog felt ashamed that he he didn't drink. He looked around at the bar, Pat was talking about his building project but he couldn't focus on him. Across the bar, there was a man smoking a cigarrette staring at him, he had slicked back black hair and wore a white shirt with a red tie. He wasn't doing anything strange, just staring at him, like he was judging him, waiting for him to do something. Doug looked elsewhere around the bar and saw Ms. Fletcher across the bar saying goodbye to a couple of her friends.
"What the...!? 'Scuse me for moment Pat." he said as he walked over to her table.
"So you're not one for bars are you?"
"I didn't want to hurt your feelings so I told a little lie." she said
"So you thought lying would be better!?"
"I'm sorry Doug, but I just don't feel that way about you."
Doug chuckled "I don't even know you're first name. Can you at least humor me and give me that much?"
"Its Nina." she said "Now can you plalease go?"
"All I want to know is why you-" Dou was interrupted when two guys pushed passed him and started flirting with Nina
"Excuse me." Doug said, tapping one the guys on the shoulder "I was talking to her first."
"What, there's a line now!?" the man said looking at his friend who just stood there and laughed "Get lost twerp!" he shoved him and went back to talking with Nina.
"Hey!" he yelled and shoved him back. The man turned around, he was as tall as Doug but looked much stronger. The man smirked at his friend, "This guy thinks he Johnny Topside. Come on Johnny, you wanna fight? Let's go, I'll even give you a free shot."
His face was so cocky and arrogant that it wriled Doug up. He punched him across he face, it knocked him back but not out. He turned around and felt his cheek, there was a small cut and a bruise but not much else.
"My turn." he said. The next thing Doug knew, he was on the ground getting kicked and punched. The best Doug could do was to try and fend off some of the blows. Suddenly there was a loud bang, the whole bar fell silent and Dougs attackers stopped. The bartender stood there pointing a shotgun a lt the two men. "Let the kid go." he said calmly as he cocked his gun. The two men hoisted Doug to his feet. He had a bloody nose, a cut on his forehead and it hurt to breathe. "Listen kid." the man said quietly "I don't wan to see your face in this bar again. Understood?" Doug nodded. The man let him go and his friend shoved him out he bar. He walked out of the bar nursing his wounds. He could year snickers coming front he crowd, he didn't dare look back at Nina or Pat, he was to ashamed. He took the elevator to his apartment. When he reached the doorway, he couldn't hold it in anymore and he started to break down. He began crying and banging on the wall, he heard a pound banging on he other side "Hey shut up! I'm trying to sleep!". It was his landlord. Doug reagained his composure and fished his key out of his pocket, dreading another day. He opened the door and began walking inside when he kicked something over. He looked down, it was a big black shopping bag, no label or name on it. He picked it up, inside there were three black boxes. He opened up the largest box. Inside was a new suit, it was all black, the shirt, he jacket, pants, fedora and shoes. He looked at the tag, it was from Percius Exchange. "Thas the fanciest store in Rapture." he thought "They only do custom jobs." He tried it on, it actually fit him, he moved on to he next box. His eyes widened, inside was a pistol, it had pearl grips and came with four magazines. He looked for a place to holster his weapon when he saw that there was a holster for his gun and ammo sown into the inside of his jacket. "What does this person expect me to do?" he wondered. He opened the last box, inside was a hypo and two bottles, one with a red fluid inde and the othe with a blue. He picked up the red bottle and stuck the needle in at the top and drew the fluid. He took a breath, stuck the needle in his wrist and pressed down on the plunger. At first he felt nothing but soon he started feeling woozy, the room started to spin, he felt very hot. He looked at his hands, they were on fire, he began to panic he screamed and tried to run to the sink. He fell to the ground and slowly began to lose consciousness.
