It's been confirmed that some units can fire at range.
Erm, no. I remember a game, don't know its name anymore, I played on my Amiga 500 next to 20 years ago that had ranged units. They even could protect other units nearby if they got attacked by shooting at the attacker first. For balancing things, they could only protect those who were on an adjacent square, and they could only protect once a turn when they previously didn't attack. That game had units with different ranges, so you could use long-range units like ballistas or catapults for attack and short-range units like shortbows or crossbows for defending your infantry. I have seen that concept again by and then - although in fewer details.
