    What makes splicers become deformed?

I have been wondering about this for a while now and was wondering if anyone knew what exactly the canon answer is to this question?

Just why is it that all the splicers appear deformed in the games, whether it's missing appendages, such as eyes, skin, ears, noses, etc, or skin seemingly falling off, or tumors forming all over splicers' bodies? I don't remember seeing any reason for these wild mutations, and I honestly can't think of one that would adequately explain it, so what do you guys think/know?

yeah bioshock 1 says its adam. and somewhere in bs2 mentions that splicing with multiple companies products might have side effects. and also got to figure it has something to do with adam addiction as well.
