    Unhappy Bioshock2 won't Start

    Hi,

    Problem: Bioshock 2 won't start.

I am using Steam under Win7 Pro 64 with two ATI Radeon HD 4770 in XFire.

Launching the Single Player game, I see the small 'Bioshock 2' banner splash, then nothing. I do not recieve any error messages or alerts from Steam or Windows. There is minimal disc activity after the splash.

It was working fine until the weekend [27/02/10]. No new software was installed prior to the error and there were no MS updates either.

Since the problem started I have 'verified the integrity' the Steam files and defraged them, updated ATI and Realtech Audio drivers, reinstalled MSVC++ Redistributeables, DirectX and GFWL [which runs ok with Dirt2].

    Multiplayer works fine.

Looking at your DXDIAG I can see that your display drivers are not installed properly, please reinstall these drivers.

Ok Uninstalled fully, reboot (BS2 not starting), reinstalled ATI 10.2 (64) Catalyst, reboot. BS2 still wont start. Nothing after BS2 banner splash.

New DXDiag (note these are the 32bit dxdiag reports [there is 64bit report button])

It seems your drivers still arn't installed correctly. could you please uninstall them in add/remove programs, then use a program such as Drive Sweeper or Ccleaner to clean your system and then please reinstall the new drivers.

OK. Uninstalled as per your instruction using DriveSweeper.

No ATI drivers showed up in drivesweeper before reinstalling ATI "10-2_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu.exe" Catalyst control center.

    BS2 still not working.

    Try the following:

Please download and install the latest version of Direct X from the following link
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Click the Download button on this page to start the download, or select a different language from the Change language drop-down list and click Go.

Download the file to your computer for installation at a later time, click Save.
Extract the file to a new folder on the desktop and run the dxsetup.

Could you then please follow the below path:-

    C:\ Program Files \ 2k Games \ Bioshock 2 \ SP \ Builds \ Binaries

    - In the Binaries file you will find a file named Bioshock2Launcher.exe

    - right click on this file and select send to > desktop (create shortcut)

    - go to the desktop and right click the desktop shortcut and select properties

    - select the shortcut tab

    - click in the 'Targetline' line and press the End key on the keyboard

    - then type ' -dx9', (this should be after the quotation marks after bioshock.exe)

    - Click on Apply then OK.

    - Please run the game from this shortcut

    or try the following:

    Talking Success

    Hi Tech Paul,

Thanks for your help and persistance!

The last lot of suggestions didn't work I'm affraid.

    However, I have had success!

I was watching the Event logs and the errors were all identicle in each compatability mode test, i.e. the SP/Bioshock2.exe. Not that that was necessarily the faulty component, but I decided to delete just the SP/Bioshock2.exe and re verify the files through Steam again. I had done this previously, along with deleting the Launcher exe and a few other files, but to no avail. That was the point at which I contacted you.

This time Steam reported '80 files failded validation'. These were then re-downloaded and re-installed. On starting the game it played OK! I then applied the GFWL patch that was requested and all seems to be fine so far.

I have no idea if it was any or all of the various thing we tried but its working. Just to make it clear what steps I took this morning:

    1 Delete \Steam\steamapps\common\bioshock 2\SP\Builds\Binaries\Bioshock2.exe
2 Launch Steam and validate files for Bioshock2 and allow install.
    3 Restart System.
    4 Start Game

These are the folders updated: Binaries, FlashMovies and Content

These were the files updated today 03/03/10
    http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/lh/pho...eat=directlink

N.B. Since the GFWL update these files have changed to earlier dates in FEB 05/02

Thanks for your help, hope this helps some others too!
