    Civ V : Linux Native

Will there be a way to play Civ V natively in Linux? That would definitely be a great real technological improvement. Playing the game with wine/cedega sucks.

Yeah would be great and since Ubuntu 9.10 has a system set in place (although not yet activated) (I think) so that software can be purchased for from the repository it would be possible. Plus I'm guessing there are alot of Linux users amoung Civ fans.

It would be really great to have a native linux version, even better if it would be available at release.

But I think it's more realistic to hope for good wine support, just like Civ IV. Which I can play without any problems with wine, though it did take some time to reach this state.

Well it took some time til it played without problems on its target Windows environment.

Well, it's all a question of what you want to spend your development time in.
I'd rather see a well balanced, bug-free windows only game than a buggy multiplatform game.
In the end it all comes down to economics and I don't think the linux-only gaming community is large enough to justify the investment, seeing that the pc-only gaming community itself has been under murdering pressure from consoles for years.

My point was that the Civ fan base isn't the same as most other games. I was suggesting that Civ probably has more Linux users in its fan base than most other games, some good wine support would be enough rather than a native Linux support. I'm sure some of the coders will be Linux users maybe they will be nice enough to work on wine support in their spare time Albeit after release.

i began in civ world with Revolution on console because i have only linux machines at home. So your logic drives me to play console instead of PC ....
I wanted to go further in civilization and now i play civ iv on my linux with wine. But it would be easier for me if civ v is native on linux.

I have both Mandriva 2010 and Windows XP, and I would happily cancel the Microsoft OS if ever some games would turn on Linux... Once, maybe, they'll think of us and offer us the Linux version, like they do for the people who have Mac computers, without Cedega, I mean.
    It would be great!

I just set up Civ4 with wine. It was surprisingly painless, and it runs a bit more smoothly than in its native OS. Good thing, I guess, as civ games are the only thing that get to boot into my XP partition, and that's only been happening for a week every few months these days. Now I can sap my productivity whenever I want!

I'm content so long as Civ5 runs on XP or wine on a machine that's somewhat out of date (Athlon 64 X2, ~3GHz) -- if it doesn't, then I'll join the party in a few years. Working on my Suse box natively would be a nice bonus, but I understand that market forces are not particularly backing me here.

(and maybe in a few years, there will be a nice mass shift over to embracing cross platform libraries -- I've been doing my coding with them since I started, and I still don't see much in the way of real benefit to using single platform libraries; but I dream a bit here ^_^ )

    Thumbs up

Well, I dual-boot with Vista only to play smoothly my favourite games, including Sid Meier's Civilization series. If you'd succeed with running Civ V with WINE please drop here a note on how did you do it. Many people will appreciate that

I think the more important question is not if Civ5 will work via wine... but rather, will steam. Since steam seems to have wiggled it's way into every aspect of Civ5 without steam support in linux getting Civ5 to work via wine might be rather difficult.

Actually if they do a port they can have it on Mac in under a hundred man-hours, plus it would really be running the Windows version in a shell and any improvements would be shared.

I would buy if it was on Linux

Just been through the effort to register, in order to place a vote for a Linux version. I would buy the game if it were to run robustly on linux, but am not prepared to buy and install Windows 7 just to play a game.

I understand the reliance on steam may be an issue, (and not only because steams constant nagging can be pretty annoying).

I am sure there are others like me who feel the same, but could not be bothered to track down the forum, register, post etc.
