I think that a great idea for Civ V would be to implement specific technologies instead (as well?) of future tech.
Maybe like the Next War mod?

I think they'll probably do what they did with Civ 4, where in a standard game it just goes to future tech, but in a mod or expansion have actually techs.
I've always felt that future techs should allow you to augment some aspect of your Civ. It could function in a similar fashion to experience points with units in that the next level requires an exponential increase in the amount of points required.
If you could do something like increase the science output of all laboratories, the effectiveness of hospitals, the production bonus from assembly plants etc. it would be much more beneficial to research future techs. The increase could be marginal, just a few percentage points.
And each additional tech in a certain branch would require double the beakers for the previous advance. (20,000 - 40,000 - 80,000 - 160,000...) meaning that it would eventually reach a point that further augmentation takes a ridiculous amount of research but it is still possible should you so desire to pursue it.
PLease...no!!!
I dont want to see mech's and guys on jumjets etc etc...
Leave that for alpha centuri 2 please..
Keep it realistic!
I was always disappointed with future tech being some generic thing that made no difference in the game play. I say yes to Mechs and other advanced weaponry and buildings / wonders. If you don't want to play with that, choose to start your games in ancient times and win or quit before the future techs start, or put a turn timer on, or have a designated "win by this date" option.
Nobody said anything about jetpacks or Mech warriors...
It would just be nice if Future Techs actually meant something.
Nothing crazy... just some minor augmentations to customize your civ in the end-game. You could even limit it to 5 future techs so things don't get out of control.
I'd definately be game for near future techs such as nano tech, meta materials, human genetic enginering, quantum computing, dark energy research, fusion power, AI etc. Nothing too outlandish should come from it though like terminator style robots and FTL travel and such.
Yeah the future techs in IV gave +Gold +Happiness in all cities, so I expect it will be similar, would be good to give them real names and possibly different effects, so fusion could be +2 health (no CO2) or +1 health +1 production (due to abundance of energy). Save the jet packs and mechs for the mods and expansions.
As well as future techs, would be awesome if you got Units that never officially existed but you could use ingame.
I remember a documentary that discussed Nuclear Powered aircraft (I'm not joking neither), and the Russians had a prototype Propeller Aircraft powered by nuclear energy. The shielding for the generator was too bulky/heavy so they removed it completely, you can guess the rest.
An even better concept was the US Autonomous Nuclear Powered Scramjet, which would also double as a high velocity bomb
I would love for some future techs to be a colaborative effort by allied nations (CERN or Fusion Power), putting forward money or production towards the projects.

Yes, we definitely need future techs that are more specific that unlock futuristic units.
Civ 4 was too shallow with future techs.
If they do that it will allow modders to make more fun futuristic mods for Civ 5.
