Thread: MAFIA larger then MAFIA II

    MAFIA larger then MAFIA II

Yesterday i got MAFIA from an old box and found out that I never came further than the second mission, but that's not what this thread is about.
The back of the cd-rom cover of MAFIA said that MAFIA is 12 square miles:
Explore over 12 square miles of this 1930's American city, with simulated traffic, landmarks and surrounding landscapes that evolve over time
    Denby Grace said:
'So the city in MAFIA 2 is actually, it's 10 square miles and that is like double the size of that in mafia 2 you know.'
I hope I'm wrong somehow, im 100% sure the back of mafia 1 says 12 square miles.

    yes you're right

but is especially oomdat to 1 mafia is in countryside
Mafia 2 and the city is really focused

Mafia 2 but must be twice as long
because there are more side missions

but also know that maybe change
and there is still a countryside in Mafia 2

    we shall see
    are a couple of months

I think they might have lied on the box for Mafia 1 because I saw that too and it doesn't seem right at all. Games like GTA III and Vice City say that their cities are smaller than Lost Heaven, but they seem alot larger, especially Liberty City in GTA III.

I don't know, it just seems 12 square miles is way bigger than what the actual game is, but I don't know if they count the countryside or not. If you count the countryside and the racetrack, then it could very well be 12 square miles. The only thing that's a little silly about that is you hardly ever use the countryside in the main game. The countryside seemed like it was just as large as the city or very close to it lol. I'd say the countryside alone was 4-6 square miles so the city would have only been about 6-8 square miles which sounds a little more reasonable.

The 12 square miles described in the readup of Mafia The City of Lost Heaven
covered also the countryside.. not just the city.. I think if I remember from
reading somewhere the city was only about 5 or so square miles in size.

i think in Mafia 2 these 12 square miles will be a lot larger than gta 4. Mafia 2 will be most realistic game. In real life 12 square miles is not little, i think my city where i live is about 10 square miles and it takes some time to get from one point to other, so there is nothing to worry about guys.
We will cruise with old chevy in this super cool city Empire baycity, enjoy the living blocks, center of the city and actually enjoy the whole ride

same here, unless there is something to do in almost every part of the city there is no point in making it so big. Thats one of the things i didn't like about Mafia 1 was that there was this big open world but there was nothing to do.

well the city will be 80% city, and 20% country side. But I agree with you I prefer a smaller city as well. That way each street corner can be detailed and polished, while with a bigger city that would proabley be hard to do, thus leaving the city less polished..

one thing that has not been considered is this.. may be the reason why
Mafia II is taking so long could be so that the creators/developers can
ensure that no stone is unturned in creating a detailed map and city
that is as realistic in quality and quantity.. for all to enjoy.

Personally I thought the first game had too small a city.. I enjoyed driving
around the countryside but that got a bit too monotonous.. also I would
gather that there will be a hell of a lot more to do in Mafia II other than
just driving or walking around aimlessly even in free-roam or freeride as
it was in the first game.. well that's my penny'sworth anyway.

Personally I hope this isn't the case. If they're STILL thinking of new ideas to add to the game then we've got quite a while to wait. They should be WAY past the thinking stage and the implementing stage. The game should be more or less finished by now. At this time, I hope that all they're working on is polishing the game to get the most out of the platform technology available and working on fixing any bugs.

Well a game will always have bugs, although for glitches I hope people don't make the annoying Youtube videos with glitches (that hopefully want be very noticeable) of Mafia II, it just got really annoying seeing them all over the place.
But I guess the game has to be released before people can find glitches etc

P.S the glitches and stuff were cool in Mafia 1

ah but then if you look at the how the first game turned out.. they made
a whole load of changes before it finally was released and as far as they
were concerned... the game was ready when they announced release
around Easter 2001.. they weren't happy with it so they announced another
release in around the November of that year.. again they felt the game was
not ready.. May 2002 came another announcement.. but NO.. so we wait
until 28/08/2002 September I think for the UK.. get the picture!! I still stick
with my opinion.. these guys are perfectionists and are not just going to rush
this game out. Oh and before you blurt out..
"we've been waiting since 2007 when the game was publicly announced"
remember M1 was in development from 1998 so 4 years to release.. M2 is far
more complicated and advanced.. another pointer btw..

Who say's this game won't come out in July? Or even later than that...

No offence, but I'm just tired of all this optimism. We need to get realistic here, and face the facts...which is, that it may be a longer wait than we expect.

May, June, or July, or even Fall, there's no fact about any release date, about optimism or pessimism.
So... so so so... wait, again and again, try to guess, speculate, pfff... boring...

I am all for optimism, if no optimisn existed, what will keep us being intrested in the game for so long?

Because we know this game will of the best games we have played in a LONG time. The way I see let it be released when it NEEDS to be released. I don't want to rush them, let them to do everything they want to with it, and release then. I mean I'm fine waiting till Fall or Winter if need be. I'd rather see another delayed for 8 months, because it's better to have a delay than an unpolished game that your stuck with forever.

That's still no reason to be a pessimist about it. What would be "unpolished" about it? Can you give an example that is worth delaying the game again?

I was saying in GENERAL. With Bioshock 2 everything looked fine from the gameplay vids and screen shots, but in the end it was filled, and I mean FILLED with bugs and glitches. Like I said if they feel that it's not ready then let them release it when it IS ready. Instead of pushing them to hurry it up, when you and I know we'll be more angry if the game has issues.

In my opinion, that is the lesser of the two evils. I don't have any experiece with Bioshock 2, but aren't glitches and bug usually found by the end user first anyway?
