    DLC vs EXPANSION

I was wondering, do you dudes think that they might jump on the DLC trend? Personally I'm not opposed at all, some DLC are rippofs but the same can be said of some expansions. Conversely some DLC pack a lot of value.

I would not mind if CIV 5 dropped and then every couple of months we got something like $5 for 5 Civilizations or $10 for a Future units, tech and civics mod. You know, imagine that Warlords and Beyond the sword would have been broken up into $5 and $10 chunks.

That way say something like a sci-fi mod does not float your boat, you could just skip it. On the other hand 3 historical scenarios with new civilizations for $10 might really thrill that WW2 enthusiast.

    Any thoughts?

    Expansion

I would like to see Expansion. I usually don't buy and keep away from DLC. Call me traditional, but I prefer, nice looking box, cd and book that smell with fresh paint.

I'm down with full expansions, done right, with a good chunk of time between them.

Theoretically I wouldn't have a problem with the expansions being released in smaller chunks for smaller prices as downloads, but with industry greed at an all time high, that would inevitably mean that we'd end up paying twice the price of the original full game for the equivalent of one expansion.

That's not a good deal for us customers.

I already started a thread on this topic a couple of days ago. But in a nutshell - No Day 1/Pre-order DLC content....Its a rip off most of the time. Bring on the expansions though!

I am all for full expansions that add core components to the game. For instance, adding the ability to create corporations in the game would be expansion.

Adding a couple corporations to the list of current corps would definitely be DLC material.

So basically anything small that an amatuer could probably mod in anyway should be officially added to the game in the form of DLC.

Bigger things that add vast functionality should be the focus of expansions.

Oh also, an expansion needs to affect the whole game. I don't want another colonization that basically just looks at 400-600 years of history....

Yeah, definitely. I love it when they give you a nice big book of stuff that you can read through on the way home before you play. The promotion map was really good in Civ IV.

I would like that the expansions of Civ V were about periods or areas, like CivV: Ancient Times or CivV:Far East. They could include many civilizations and many scenarios. The programmers can do many expansions of Civ V and no more parts of the Civ saga, that is, I don’t want CivVI and CivVII. Besides, I would like less European civilizations and more civilizations of all the world, mainly Africans, that were important in History although we don’t know.

i go with an expansion. dlc seems to me useless because i can download lots of mods and scenarios freely thanks to modders, even some mods like Rhye's, first developed freely and then included at BTS.

so if you have lots of money to give gaming companies maybe you can also think donate to modders, they make a great job.

No one will ever convince me that DLCs are better than full expansions, on the player/buyer point of view.

DLCs are just a better/faster way to make money for game developers.

DLCs are little add-ons to games, like some DLC for maps, some DLC for new units and some DLC for extra abilities/gameplay features. Expansion packs add these things ALL in one CD/digital download and are generally better quality.

So, theres no comparison, expansion packs are the best.
