2K Games WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?! (Activation among other BS)

First you delay the PC demo, then we learn there are broken Big Daddy figurines, after that the widescreen mess up and now I learn that I can install and activate my LEGAL COPY OF THE GAME 2 times where as if I pirated the game all would be hassle free. ARE YOU TRYING TO MAKE PEOPLE PIRATE THE GAME OR WHAT? You can't seriously be thinking that every 2 activations people will buy the game again? Can we please get an official response?

Signed, we gamers need our rights, this is ridiculous, I install/uninstall games everyday and format/upgrades periodicaly and I´m not gonna waste my money.

Signed... As long as 2K won't give an acceptable statement I won't buy it... I'm using the pirated version right now to extract textures for my bioshock windows theme....

Signed, it's ridiculous that we have to be hassled by this. We're paying customers who payed a ton of money for this game. Meanwhile those who stole the game get a free bioshock and are not hassled at all, it amazes me that 2k does not understand this and act accordingly (i.e. letting us play normally, install regularly). If I paid for the game I should have a right to install it on both my PCs and I reformat often enough for it to be a problem with Bioshock.

I was planning on installing this on my XP partition (for AA&the homebrew widescreen patch) and my vista 64 partition to compare directx 10 performance.

If either crash beyond recovery, or I forget to uninstall bioshock with a working internet connection before I wipe, or worst of all I get a hard-drive crash wiping out both copies, I'm boned.

    Even steam has this limitation.

I then need to go cap in hand to secureROM half way round the world in a different time zone and beg for the chance to reinstall my own damn property.

    DO. NOT. WANT.

Come to think of it this whole thing has SCAM written all over it. I'm sure 2K knew about this before hand. Why didn't you warn people properly?

Oh my god did this game attract all the whiney masses in the world

We didn't pay for the demo and from what I understand they were waiting on nvidia and ati to get beta drivers out that were late.
And I don't blame them with the complaining you people give them.

The big daddy figures that are broke they not only replace but an art book too, trully these publishers are horrible/

Oh my your limited too two installs at the start, they will i hope and believe like all other who have used this system will bring out a patch.

Apparently, because you just have to whine too. If you're ok with all this discrimination then so be it. Others aren't fine with it, you should accept that and "get a grip".

There is now a root kit on my system? Why wasn't I given this info before I purchased?

Signed. 2K has lost a lot of respect from me for doing this. I'll be buying the game, because I think it'll be absolutely awesome, but it's likely I won't do the same next time...

After seeing that a widescreen FIX was made, i was all happy to go pick up my pre-order copy...

Now that i read this install limit ☺☺☺☺ i'm again think of getting my money back and waiting for a pirated version.... Unless i would hear that the install limit thing would be repaired in future patches or something.

I never really will HAVE the need for more that two, but if i BUY a game i should be able to install in as many times as i wish.

this certainly discourages piracy.. UNTIL IT GETS CRACKED!
After that it has the opposite effect.

    Oh well.

Congratulations 2K, you have worse customer service than pirates. PLEASE remove the securom activation crap from the game, you are shooting yourself in the foot. I would really love to buy this game but I just can't justify it with all these reported issues.

How many years was it that you had to prepare for the release of this game? Come on, you can do better than this .

  19. #19
sorry for the intromission, but there is any official word about this activation issue? I can't read all the topics in this forum about this, and I want to know what the developers have to say.

first off, the PC demo was never delayed.

second, i think a lot of people are very happy with how we are handling the big daddy figurines that are broken. we are replacing them all free of charge and giving people an artbook.

third, the widescreen was a design decision.

lastly, you can reinstall the game many times, you can only have it on two computers simultaneously. which is very reasonable, as i can't imagine needing to play the game on many machines for any good reason, at the same time, since you need the disk to play the game.

this isn't of course an "official" response, but the actual truth, and what i've been posting about all day.

I have read on other posts that people have installed it on two computers and after formatting one and trying to reinstall they seemed to have problems, is because they tried to quickly that it would not let him activate, if thats the case then quickly spread the news because there are a lot of people who are getting mad for no reason

secondly I understand that the North American LE box does not come with the steel case, is there any way of buying the case by it self, i was wondering because from what i could see I did like.

    ps keep up the games

First I would like to say that this CD Key activation and limitation is useless, the only people you are preventing from running this game are the people that went out and bought it. Anyone who wants to illegally get this game has already found a way to copy it, and repack the exe so it will run/install without SecuROM check and CD key. First off if you want to even install this game you have to be connected to the Internet (Yes it was printed on the back of the box but I was so excited to get the damn game I did not bother to check). I realize when you buy a game your paying to play it that you do not really own anything. But when I slap down fifty dollars I expect to be able to play that game when and where I want not limited to two install and having to be connected to the internet (believe it or not everyone has a internet connection on every computer). It took six tries for your copy protection to even recognize your CD code included on the game. It is for this reason I stopped buying any game produced by valve (Half-life 2 and whatnot). I understand your system check is not as invasive as Valves (checks every time the game loads up) but the hassle is the same. As far as two CD keys being enough for a user that is not your call once some one buys the game they should be able to use it on as many PC’s as they like. You still need the CD in the drive to run it its not like someone is spawning copies. And what happens years from now when Bioshock is not supported anymore and I want to play it again? Will I be able to install it or will it stop at the CD check permanently because it cannot connect to your server or SecuROM’s? I understand Bioshock is your intellectual property but once I hand over money for your product I expect that I can use it where and when and as much as I want for as long as the CD it is on holds out. To finish up, you lost a customer I am returning the game (which I ran to get special the day it was released) and will not be purchasing any 2K games until Internet activation is removed from the installations. It’s a disappointment to me a person that bought multiple copies of system shock 2 just because I always wanted to have the ability to play a great game that I felt was a classic.

people who are installing on many computers will raise suspicion. we have run tests in the office today uninstalling and reinstalling and had no problems. i was standing there doing these -- because i was testing out the complaints.

also, the US edition was never to come out with the steel case... there is one version in europe that has one, however.

also, if by some chance you guys do have an issue with your activation key, please do contact securom. all the incidences i have encountered today have already been dealt with personally by them. they are giving out new keys if you need them. i believe right now the only people who may be thwarted are the pirates.

WHAT ABOUT A BIOSHOCK PC DEMO?
    August 13, 2007

After the appearance of the BioShock Demo on Xbox 360™ last night, I’m sure many of you PC fans wondered, “What about us?”

    Here’s the deal.

A BioShock PC Demo IS coming. We tried as hard as humanly possible to get it out to you guys simultaneously with the 360 demo, but we needed to make sure that it was perfect -- that all drivers were ready, and that the game looked great on a huge variety of computers.

Currently, the PC demo in its final stages of testing and approval. We are pushing to get it out to you as soon as possible. It will be out during the month of August, and everyone is working at full capacity to deliver it to you before the game hits store shelves on August 21st. I will also let you know as soon as I have an exact date for the demo's release, so please stay tuned.

I cannot express enough how sorry I am for the wait. Thank you for understanding and your patience. Just remember -- only eight days left till you get your hands on the full game.

I’ll let you know where to get the demo as soon as it becomes available.
The emphasized portion indicates that it WAS delayed. To say otherwise now is a bit much for everyone to swallow.

So you're completely discounting the THOUSANDS of legit owners currently enraged across the internet? Wow. Such remarkable attitudes from people who's job is making customers happy.

So you intentionally released it over week later than 360 demo?

True, but you have to UNINSTALL the game before you can reinstall and I don't do that too often, usually I only remove good games from my HD when I format.

PS. I just counted I've installed System Shock 2 over 20 times and uninstalled 2 or 3 times.

Great game - won't buy it until protection is removed

I never register or post on these forums, but felt compelled to do so.
I am an avid gamer, and I appreciate programming and design efforts that went into this title. This was one of the top games on my buy list, until today.

Unfortunately, I cannot convince myself to purchase this game becuase of the DRM software that comes with it. I probably will never install it more than once, but the *principle* of the DRM approach you have taken is a slap in the face to honest consumers.

I will download the craked version of this game when it is available, and enjoy playing it.

If/when you release a version of Bioshock without DRM, I will gladly buy it.

    Thank you.

You guys are idiots, and youre just twisting Elizabeth's words to suit your argument.

The Bioshock demo was not delayed. From what i remember, it came out on the 21st, just like they said it would. Just because it didnt come out on the exact date the 360 version did doesnt mean it was delayed. They never said it would be released then in the first place.

Yeah I want that # as well. I want to call them and scream I Paid for this game, dammit....so it's mine....not your's. What the hell kinda voodoo did you do to Irrational to ever go along with such a lame-brained protection scheme??

    ahem.

Sorry but this really bites. 1984 meets pc gaming. Just what we need to help the platform vs consoles. Games that Expire after a few installs.

My question to you, 2kelizabeth, is what about us hardcore gamers? You know, the ones who went out and pre-ordered the LE CE for PC monthes before?

The ones who also upgrade computers every 6 monthes or so? How does this help our experience when we want to play the game on our next new fancy machine? Tough sh*t or what? Just because we don't keep the same computer full of the same crap for 5-10 yrs means we have got to suffer just so that 2-3 copies don't get stolen?

    Thanks alot 2K.

  36. #36
this is utter BS, i cant install the game anymore on steam because i installed it on 2 PC's, STEAM is a way to play games wherever you go, and this just ruined that...2K games i feel screwed...

    Elizabeth,

If you are telling the truth above then how do you explain this statement from Chris Kline:

"You will see more in widescreen. We use a different projection matrix; there is no squashing or stretching of the image involved."

    http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=659

    You can't both be right.

  38. #38
Cross-posted from technical but I think posting here might, just...might just get a chance of response here...

Personally, I think the Only responsible act 2k can do to fix this issue is this:

Offer a replacement program like with the broken statue issue(IMHO, a much smaller issue), you want a DRM-free copy of the game, send your retail copy back.

A few days later receive a brand-spanking new copy of the dvd with no lousy limited activation in tow. A cd-check or key-check is fine, but NO LIMIT.

So 2K, How does this solution sound? Sounds pretty good to me as a consumer, and since you get a retail dvd back, you know I am a paying customer. So how about it?

    Pissed..

More than 2 installs = a coaster..... Thats a great way to do business, you guys must have been to the Steam school of paranoia. Why else would you cripple a game to the point of forcing your customers to keep the same hardware, or live with a bug or fault with out the option of reinstalling windows. Windows software does crash from time to time, and hardware does break. This protection forces your customers not to change hardware or re-install the OS when we want to. How dare you. It may seem illogical to you to re-install windows more than once but this is WINDOWS. You guys are short sighted and need to wake up. Secure Rom is destined to fail and the only good option is giving your customers a good product with ease of use and good customer service. This is how you stop pirates. Protect your intelectual property but dont force people to do things that are un-fair. I will never bow to steam or pay for something I cant use more than a couple of times after upgrade or re-install of my OS. I will be returning my game back for refund tommorrow and wait until someone at 2K learns how to protect property without alienating the customer.

Yup, not acceptable... even if you had infinite installs the rootkit BS is not on. Were were 2k a year ago when the ☺☺☺☺ hit the fan about DRM of this kind? You obv don't remember the ☺☺☺☺ those companies got into.

I love the idea above, send our FULL RETAIL copies back to 2k for a non riddled version thus proving we paid and we are still prepared to pay for a version without it.

It's that or it's going back today (unopened and sitting on my deskt as I type).

The temptation to install the game is completely quashed by the repulsion to install rootkits with it.
