A return of the "castle" / throne room feature?

One of my fondest memories of playing Civ as a child involved developing the castle, and decorating the throne room in Civ 1&2. I know they're not really part of the core gameplay, but I would love for either one to make a return to the series in Civ V.

Viking Hoard room with animal skins and a stone throne ftw

Yes please! I really missed this feature in Civ IV. Hopefully something like this makes an appearance in Civ V. Whatever it is, it needs to be interactive (user built) not like the throne room in Revolution.

    Agreed.

I had forgotten about this, but when I read this a smile came to my face. So yes please on the castle/throne room.

I can't say this will really make or break the game for me, but it would be a fun little inclusion.

They could involve it like a sort of achievement thin like they have on xbox or ps3. It can be a place to show your acheivements, civs youve conquered etc. Maybe even have one for your online profile, like a way of showing how youve playd etc. Basically an interactive/custom trophy room for all to see...

Agree. Deletion of this option in Civ 4 was pathetic .

Yes Please! I miss that small yet very gratifying part of the game so much! What's the fun in being an almighty leader if you don't get to design your own Palace and Throne room?

Seconded. Maybe this could also be the place you convert, change civics, etc... OH and when you look through the window... CITY VIEW

Best idea to date! I missed this feature too; I'd love jazz kid's idea to be implemented.

Indeed ... the Palace showed how many milestones I had achieved in Civ 1.
I really missed it in Civ 4.

Civ:Revolutions had those groups of people appearing (like fortune tellers, cooks, etc.), but the lack of choice did not make it feel the same as the awesomeness that was the Palace-screen.

I'm not too happy about this idea, since it will come with the expense of some other additions. I'd rather they take the time to make the game better in every other aspect. A throne room isn't that necessary for me.

Couldn't agree more. If it's something Firaxis can do without sacrifices - bring it back, please!

I enjoyed this part of the original Civ, and these asthetic details have always added to the enjoyment for me (Civ 2 had all the digitised advisors for example, they were funny).

So true but it would freeze my comp sometimes this is way back when I was like 10 or 11 in 96/97 so my computer wasn't the best!

  25. #25
Civ 2 was one of the first games for Windows 95 back in the day and DirectX was rather buggy back then so freezing advisors were the least of your problems

I'm literally biologically incapable of agreeing more with the OPs sentiment.

Bring back the throne room, major world leaders need to be seated upon rocks well into the 18th century.

I would love to see this feature return. I would prefer the palace feature like Civ 1 to the throne room feature that came later but either would be nice.

Even though decorating your palace is kind of pointless, because it doesn't do anything and is for show, I would still like to see this anyway. It would be pretty cool to see how your palace's architecture just changes and changes gradually.

For example, you start off with some stones, then some classical architecture, medieval, renaissance, imperial, then you can decide whether or not to add-on to that palace e.g add little industrial or modern things to little parts in order to preserve that architecture from the renaissance (e.g Buckingham Palace in London) or relocate to a more modern one.

I'd like to see the palace/throne room again too. The advisers would be a pleasant surprise as well, but these are secondary to gameplay for me.

Yeah, this would be fun to see added again. Definitely like the idea of being able to see other players throne rooms, like an achievement system, maybe that would be seperate as an online thing, and for one player mode it would be more like previous versions.

I more prefer building a palace, but throne room is also better than nothing.

    Agreed.

It detracts nothing from the game and is a great bit of wry amusement, I also like it being linked to how happy your overall populace is with you so it is actually a measure of how well you are doing in some aspects.

Talking Diplomacy - gifts from foreign leaders

The palace / throne room could be made more meaningful with gifts from foreign leaders. And in the nuclear age, a red phone. If unpopular, one could see protests outside (or police, depending on civics).

It would be great to take it to the next level and have some type of points system. i.e. your civs award you so many points becoz they love you and then you can spend these how you wish. Tech advances would unlock different objects.

    Lightbulb Palace

I would love to see the palace return. It was always a nice break from the main flow of the game to spend some time building your palace. With modern technology the palace could be made more interesting than it was: How about the possibility to expand your palace with more rooms when you become more powerful? Some expansions one could think of are:
    • A treasury: Here you can look at all the gold you have. Or feel sad at the memory of having had a lot more of it once.
    • A war trophy room: Here you can keep reminders of all the major battles you fought, things like paintings of your armies being victorious in battles, the weapons of enemy generals, statues of you crushing members of other civilizations under foot,..
    • A gift room: Here you keep all tokens of appreciation you have received from friendly civilizations.
    • An audience room: People come here to entertain you if the people are happy (folkloristic dances, etc.) or they come to complain and offer you petitions if the people are unhappy.
    • A harem room?
