Exclamation gfwl failed installing update, see log?

I've read others who have trouble installing the gfwl 1.1 update but none with the specific issue I'm having. Here is the message I get when I attempt to run the update:

Failed installing title update. See log at C:\Users\(My User Name)\AppData\Local\Temp\GFWL -Install.log for details

I have tried what others have mentioned. Fresh install of gfwl and disabling of antivirus/firewall apps that might interfere with the procedure. Interestingly enough, I check for this .log file it mentions and I can't even find an "AppData" folder under my user directory. If anyone out there has ANY idea what could be keeping me from updating I would greatly appreciate any help...

Try setting your gfwl log in to manual, instead of automatic. It worked for me, maybe it will work for you.

Really what I'm looking for it to get the update patch! I guess the manual log in, will still allow you to save your game and get achievements?

You must have hidden files and folders showing.

Then check what the "Install.log" says, that may give you a clue as to the problem.

Thank you sir, for giving me the obvious reason why I couldn't find this directory! I honestly thought I still had show hidden folders set under my folder options. Alright so here is the log:

    Launching Title Update: "C:\Users\Justin\Desktop\Bioshock2_v1.001_Patch\se tup.exe"
Could not find game install folder
    To manually set folder, run: "C:\Users\Justin\Desktop\Bioshock2_v1.001_Patch\se tup.exe" /f "<path to game folder>"
    Path: C:\Users\Justin\Desktop\Bioshock2_v1.001_Patch\Tit leUpdate.msi
    Args: ACTION=INSTALL LAUNCHEDVIASETUP=1 APPLICATIONROOTDIRECTORY="Ignore" ABORTLOGPATH="C:\Users\Justin\AppData\Local\Temp\G FWL-Install.log"
    RelaunchFromCmdLine:
    RelaunchFromCmdLine:
    RelaunchFromMSI: SP\Builds\Binaries\Bioshock2Launcher.exe
    InstallFolderFromCmdLine:
    InstallFolderFromMSI:
    InstallFolderFromRegkey:
    OriginalProductCode:
    InstallFolderRegkeyProp: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\2K Games\Bioshock 2
    Failed

So because it can't find an install directory it halts the update or something? I'm not really sure what to make of this. I'm guessing I have to manually create a path?

That's so true, i'm having similar issues, the damn game isn't updating with the patch, im so pissed, and no mod helped me at all, when you buy original you are supposed play the things the way they are meant but no, it's the same crap as cracked games, anyway I don't buy cracked games, they don't support the companies, I should never have bought bioshock 2 for pc, I should have got it for Xbox, now I can't even update or play online...

I really feel you. I have posted a thread regarding if i should get the PC version or The PS3 version in the general Discussion.

    http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=59945

And by Looking at the issues here, i am really afraid to get the game for the PC. All these years i have been playing games on PC...and whatever issues,i have to do it on my own. AND I BUY THE ORIGINAL GAME TOO! I am sick of this!
And Dont tell me to Upgrade my PC to run this Low End piece of CRAP!

To the others, nothing here should scare you about getting this game, it runs fine for me and the other silent majority.

This is a support forum, all you will see is issues, but it's not an accurate reflection of the game.

    Anyway, back to the topic.

This is a standard error and is self explantory.

The patch looks in the Registry for the game path, and for some reason it can't find or access it and throws up this error.

I haven't read every post here again, so apologies if my memory is fading, but what version of the game do you have?

    EG: Steam, Direct2Drive, DVD.

Assuming it's DVD or Steam, the way around this issue is to start up a Command Prompt, and show it the path using the /f command (You may need to run the Command Prompt as Admin).

The error message has the details, and if you need more info on command prompts, use Googly.

It should work via Command Prompt, but good luck.

search for other steam games in the registry especially the one related to games for windows live..see if you can get any hints on that. I personally dont own any games which i downloaded from steam..so i am till quite unsure how the registry for steam works.

Working with a Command Prompt isn't hard, it's just a pain.

The Steam installation folder for the game should be similar to this:

"X:\Steam\steamapps\common\Bioshock 2" (I don't have Steam, so if it's not that, it will be similar).

Start a Command Prompt, change directory to where the patch is (from memory the command is cd then enter the path to the patch).

Then enter the patch name, leave a space then /F X:\Steam\steamapps\common\bioshock 2

    EG: bioshock2_Patch.exe /f X:\Steam\steamapps\common\bioshock 2

X is your driver letter. I don't have the Bioshock 2 patch, so I don't know the exact name of it, but just enter what the patch's name is.

The /f command will force the patch to install using the game path you've entered.

Thanks for the help so far. Well everything seemed to work ok and I was prompted to click finish to complete the install, and right after that I got another error:

The program can't start because binkw32.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

Why oh why am I still having issues with this? Very frustrating and I have no idea what I should do now. When I try running the game it loads up the same 1.0 version without updates, and gfwl still prompts me to download the update patch.

This is all really confusing. Why should I have to do this? Why did this install and update present so many problems for me?

Should I drop the binkw32.dll in the install directory (program files\steam\steamapps\common\bioshock2), or should I honestly completely reinstall the game? Do I really need to install the video tools?

Drop the Bink32.dll first and see if it works...

Have you tried reinstalling the game since then? As it is not finding the first file it usually hits when starting up (opening videos) there could be a deeper installation issue.

I am currently downloading and installing off steam again.
After all that is said and done I will post back here with the results. Will a fresh download from steam include the 1.1 patch or will it prompt me to update again?

It will still prompt you for the patch.

Just get the game running without the patch, then if it's fine, log in to LIVE and see if it installs the patch OK.

If you get the Bink error, install Rad Tools I linked earlier.

Related to updating, will updating to the 1.0.0.1 patch still have the main menu say v 1.0 in the corner?

Alright I've done everything mentioned so far and I still get the same error when I try to update. This is my first game purchase on steam so I have nothing else to compare to. I will say it worked perfectly fine before it started asking to update. Needless to say this may be my last at this rate. Gfwl is just awful so far, but I DO want to get this issue resolved as I am already more than halfway through the game with my saves and I want to continue getting achievements. Online play would also be nice since I purchased the game and all.

Ok so being new to steam I may have messed up the reinstall procedure? I went into steam and under my games right clicked bioshock 2 and clicked delete local content. After that it had to completely download again. Once that was done it was 100% ready to go again but I get the exact same issues. I also installed RAD video tools but hasn't changed anything and I still get the binkw32.dll error.

I'm really at a loss here and I'd hate to end up having to go to steam or 2k for a refund.

Try validating the game cache files to make sure it matches.

    To do this

    - Go to the games section in your Steam browser,

    - Right click on Bioshock2 and choose Properties.

    - Select the Local Files tab and select verify integrity of local game cache files

This should recheck the installation and update if needed.

I tried that yesterday, but went ahead and tried again just now. It says all files successfully validated.

Have you tried dropping the Binkw32.dll file under:
    Steamapps\common\Bioshock 2\SP\Builds\Binaries

Also if the above does not work try uninstalling rad game tools and restart your PC, Please let me know if this helps.

There was already a binkw32.dll file in the binaries folder but regardless I backed that one up and put the downloaded one from earlier in there (which was a larger size). This caused the game to not even start up, so I put the original back. Uninstalled RAD tools and rebooted. I attempted again to run the gfwl update patch through annoying dos commands and I still get the same error:

The program can't start because binkw32.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

Getting at the end of my ropes with this. This is by far the most trouble I've had with a pc game ever and I may have to get my money refunded...

Been trying everything I can and I still get the .dll error. Am I the only one having trouble with this?

Do you have these keys in your registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\2K Games\BioShock 2
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\2K Games\BioShock 2\MP
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\2K Games\BioShock 2\SP

Note that this is for Seven x64 so the keys are in "Wow6432Node", for XP or for Vista/Seven x86 (32bit) the key is just:
    "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\2K Games\..."

Under each key will be a value:
    InstallPath = K:\Games\2K Games\BioShock 2

The path given is where BS2 is installed. Mine happens to be installed in "K:\Games\...", yours will most likely be different.

If you don't have these keys in your registry then the game was not installed properly. You could try manually adding the keys and paths, but there is something very wrong if the install did not create the keys.

My registry lists all the way to Bioshock 2 but has nothing else. No SP or MP file and nothing in that part of the registry, just a Default (value not set). I did purchase the game from Steam, but not sure if that changes things as far as the registry goes. If anyone else has any ideas please help!

I can't remember every post in this thread, but is the game installed to the default location?

If not, uninstall it, then install it and let Steam install it to the default path.
