Well I think they are both the same thing, the term godfather probably owes it's success to the movies. The term is most probably used because a godfather is somebody who is supposed to watch over you and take care of you. While boss, don and skip are more official names and give a more "businessy" (not really a word) feeling. Also godfather sounds more respected in my opinion but over all I'd have to say godfather, don, boss, skip are all the same.
