finally I can play in Dx10 and its smooth
I was using the 195.62 drivers but getting regular lockups in Dx10 and was forced to play in Dx9. Even then performance was often poor with lots of stutter when moving between areas as stuff was loaded or buffered.
So I uninstalled my drivers and rebooted - intending to install the latest beta driver but when Windows rebooted it installed basic drivers from May 2009 (185.93 I think) and I thought why not give them a whirl.
The difference was amazing. Dx10 works again in this game - framerates are a LOT more consistent ie smooth and the image is better too - there's less bloom and textures look more defined.

I don't think these drivers have Physx or Stereoscopic 3D but so what!

The same kind of thing happend to me and could play in DX10 with no crashes or anything but when I started up my pc the afternoon the game was broken again and I could only play in DX9 again and with all the crashes.

To clarify - when I installed the game I could play in Dx10 and performance was okay. A little stuttery at times but I figured they added more detail. I was getting occasional lockups in big fights ie with a big daddy and a couple of splicers.
Then the lockups started to get more frequent so I started using the DX9 option. That stopped the lockups. Later I started a second playthrough and thought I'd try Dx10 again but found the game would crash after the intro cutscene.
Thats when I thought to update my drivers from the 195.62s but as I said .. after the uninstall I've ended up using the default Windows drivers and the difference is night n day.

Did you ever try the latest drivers?
196.21

I'm using the 196.34's and the performance is pretty poor to say the least.

Im getting such good results with the Windows 7 default drivers that I'm loath to mess around and try newer ones. As I said, they're just drivers so I have no Nvidia Control Panel (but Im not worried about that) and no Physx (big deal) and no Stereoscopic 3D (couldnt give a ****).
L4D2, Fallout 3 and STALKER: Call of Pripyat all work fine (they all worked ok with the 195.62s) so I've got no reason to update atm.

I have same issues. Widows 7 ultimate 64bits 4GoDDr2 Corsair GeForce 9800GX2 with 196.31 drivers.
Bah, 3d stereoscopic work only if you have the screen and glasses made for it.

Yep, you need a 120Hz screen.

Okay - I've now got to Dionysus Park. An area of the game where before I got pretty poor performance. Low framerates and lots of stutter as I moved between sections of the level as stuff was loaded. Now however it continues to play smoothly and all I've done it change graphics drivers.
My machine is well set up and I've not had problems with any other games for quite a while.
The poor performance and crashes I had (forcing the use of Dx9) have been fixed.
The poor FOV I've fixed for myself by adjusting my User.ini thus ....
W=MoveForward | SetFOV 90
- it looks fine - and I've lost the ability to log into GFWL once but it looks like that was because the Microsoft Servers were down.
