    Problem with ESC

    Hello,

When pressing Esc, it bumps to the Main Menu instead of the Pause Menu, losing all progress. Its can be frustrating after 2 hours of gamimg.

All my drivers are up to date, Last DX9, Windows XP SP3, .NET Framework 3.5 and last Bioshock 2 update. I'm using an Online account and i got the Rentail.

    CPU : Athlon 4200+
GPU : ATI 4600 Series (last driver)
Sound : Integrated Realtek HD Audio (last driver)

I know what i'm doing i work in IT.

Does it do this if you press F12 to quick-save and F11 to quick-load?

This happens to more than just one person including me, and no it does not do that with the F12 and F11 keys.

Been experiencing the same problem here. Also, there's no music in the main menu for me. Is that supposed to be like that.

Yeha i note the point of the music too.

I'm sure is not a keybord problem. I'm kinda sure is the GFWL

Go to Documents > Bioshock2. Right-click the folder, select Properties. Make sure the folder is not read-only. If it isn't, enter the folder and make sure the files inside aren't read-only too.

  7. #7
The folder was in read-only "mode" so to speak. I unchecked the option and applyed it to all files inside. The main menu still has no music. This time thought, when playing, pressing Esc didn't send me back to the main menu this time, I pressed several times to make sure, and seem to be working correctly. Is it related to the "read-only" thing or was it luck?

    Thanks Jamie btw.

    Ive noticed some stuff ..

    • The bug appear only when i do an action like using plasm or shooting (or when you can't control due to a clip or special event) but when you dont move its dont bug
    • We can use the F12 to save without problem.

Also, can we enable log for debug ?

Yeah what is with main menu and no music? :/ How many problems are in this game seriously.

  10. #10
something else I just realized. I wanted to double check that the Bioshock folder was no longer "read only", and realized, that whenever I change it, it resets itself to "read-only". If I untick that option, it resets itself a soon as I press Apply and close the window...

    Same issue.

I am having the same issue, and so are other users.
    http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=59552
I'm using a clean install of win7 ultimate with fresh drivers and GFWL and Bioshock are both patched. I have also had the issue with the save files causing the game to crash so I had to start all over again. I am really dissappointed with the lack of polish on the game and the little to no attention 2k is giving these issues. Probably the last time I buy a 2k game. They decided to throw all this stupid DRM BS in the mix and they need to own it. now.

I have started to experience this problem tonight (escape not giving access full menu/ save/resume options). F11/F12 still function. I can also confirm that when I tried the read only suggestion--it does revert back to 'read only' after you uncheck it and apply.

Do you have any programs running in the background which may cause the issue? Looking for input device software or any of Live services.

You can try disabling background apps on startup and clearing temp files to see if this helps:

To disable background software on startup by using msconfig please try the below Steps:

    - Click on the start menu
    - Click on run (Hold the windows key and tap R for Vista)
    - Type in the following MSCONFIG and select ok
    - Click on the startup tab
    - Select "disable all"
    - Click on apply and then close
    - Restart your computer
    - Select do not show this message again if a popup box appears and select ok

There may be temp files causing the problem to occur also. To remove your temp files please try the following steps:

    - Click on the start menu
    - Click on run (Hold the windows key and tap R for Vista)
    - Type in the following %temp% (including the percent signs) and select ok
    - Remove all files and folders within the directory that appears by clicking Edit and select all and pressing your delete key on the key board.
    - Please remove any files from recycle bin

Please try recreating the problem again. It may also be worthwhile obtaining the latest GFWL (3.2) standalone program: GFWL Download Page

FRESH INSTALL. As in I installed last night.

I don't know about anyone else but this download was part of the install. It installed the old ver and then forced an update via internet. Are you reading peoples posts or just copy pasting lvl 1 tech support pre canned ****. Other users have stated that they have already tried this in other related threads. Can we get this bumped up to gold level tech support or something? I want this fixed or give me a refund so I can give Valve my money.

Sorry about that, So have you tried logging into the GFWL outside of the game?

Also in game have you checked that you are logged in before resuming or continuing a game by pressing the "home" button?

    Please let me know.

yeah. I learned that trick when trying to troubleshoot the save files causing crashes issue. What happens is when I'm playing and want to pause or save and I press ESC half of the time it will take me to the main menu (single player, Multiplayer, quit to windows) and if i press ESC again it asks me if i really want to quit. If I select single player and then continue it goes to my last auto save from forever ago. The game is pretty much unplayable.

I just had this same issue occur tonight. I was playing, hit escape to save my game, and it gave me the "Single player / quit to multiplayer / quit to windows" options. I've already used msconfig, closed background apps, cleared temp files, reinstalled C++/GFWL/BioShock2, and probably another one or two common suggestions just to get the game to not crash, so I doubt it's caused by any of that. It's especially odd because less than 20 minutes earlier I'd hit escape and saved without a problem.

If it helps, I checked my Documents\BioShock2 directory and the read only checkbox has a solid square (not a checkmark), the "some things are read only but not everything" state. I unchecked it, applied, and then opened the properties again and it was back to the "some things..." state.

Ok, So both Sheltim and Backwoods, you are logged into GFWL before even launching the program? Then ensured you guys are both logged in in-game before progressing?

I'm just asking as a few users have noted success trying it this way. Reference: http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=60093

I'm not an expert but I doubt this is save file related. This likely solved some other issues with saving in other threads but doubt it causes a random menu glitch. Again, I want a steam copy. The only reason I have the stupid retail is because I wanted the posters and the vinyl. Turns out it only has the eerie and dramatic background score and none of the beautiful '50s music I wanted. Boy do I feel like a fool. I got a fancy 95 dollar box, a useless cd and record (unless it goes in my next slasher film) and a glitchy game I can't play easily with all my steam friends. **** you 2k.

Have you tried disabling user account controls? Or even running the program as administrator under

    C:\program files\2K Games\Bioshock2\SPBuilds\Binaries\

The njust right click the launcher and select "run as administrator" To disable User account controls access Start > Control Panel > User Accounts then select "Turn user account control on or off"

Please restart after doing the above. Also please try installing the web installer version of directx from: >Directx link here< If you already have the latest version, the web installer will detect this and specify no update is needed.

Please let me know if this helps.

I was running as an Administrator when it occurred. I've also run the DirectX updater within the last few days and it said I was current.

To be honest, I'm really sure how to tell if this has been fixed or not since it's so unpredictable. I guess we could just keep trying to use the Escape key and see if it breaks after 50 tries.

    Show hidden files and folders,

    - In Windows XP: Click on the Tools menu then choose Folder Options.
    - In Windows Vista: click on the Organize menu and choose Folder and Search Options.
    - Click on the view tab.
    - Ensure "Show hidden files and folders" is selected in the list.
    - Press Apply then OK.

    Go to the following location:-

    C > Users > YOUR PC LOGIN > App Data > Roaming > Bioshock 2

Right click the clear space in this folder and select New, then Folder.

Move the contents of this folder to your new folder.

    Launch the game.

The folders contents will be re-created once the game launches.

Has anyone tried slowing down the repeat delay and/or repeat rate for their keyboard?

    Thumbs down

No. It's a damn fps. I want a fast repeat rate. This was not an issue on BS1.
I'm sorry I'm so pissy about this but when I shell out $95 for a damn game because I want the viynl and some posters I expect a certain level of polish.
Can I have a manager give me a call? PM me if needed.

  28. #28
Same problem here. Always logged into GFWL, running the BS2 as administrator. I'm always quicksaving before hitting ESC just in case, but it's getting annoying.

May I ask for those of you with the same issue, Do you have any additonal peripherals connected? What kind of Keyboard do you own? Is it ps2 or USB does it require drivers for any of its features? Is it Wireless or Wired?

As a temporary workaround or a fail-safe at the very least try quick saving and quick loading before attempting to return to the main menu:

    F12 = Quick Save
    F11 = Quick Load

Just a normal notebook keyboard, wired of course . Never tried to install drivers for that, don't think that's necessary.

Not the rate but the delay...if set too high it can cause two responses from one key push.

I wonder if this is a laptop or laptop keyboard driver issue.

I play on desktop without this issue.

It's not very often for me. About one in.... 20 I'd guess. Desktop, wired USB keyboard, wired USB mouse, the only other peripherals are speakers and headphones. Did not install drivers for any of it.

That is true, however 2 escape presses whether in rapid succession or not would not do that. It would flick to the menu then return back to the game.

sorry for not posting any helpful info, I had been checking the thread back, but was always looking at the first page! (did not realised there were three more pages of thread )

I have a Logitech G15 keyboard and a Logitech mouse with two side buttons and tilting wheel. Both are USB. But I have an adaptor for the mouse, so its USB is not directly connected to the PC.

I also have Logitech Setpoint software, and the Logitech "G-Series key profiler"

I did try deactivating them, but no luck.

  39. #39
I have both a g15 keyboard and a g5 mouse....using the g15 profile software....not having any keystroke issues (knock on wood)

Man I'm glad the game defaulted me to off-line mode. As for future DLC...forget about it...the game is not that good...sorry 2K..you dropped the ball on this one..at least we will always have Paris..ehhh..I meant Bioshock 1...

All my other GFWL games automatically sign me in...not this one though. Kinda glad it did that now...

This game is a mess... Awful WS FOV..vanishing plasmids..no vending machine sounds..weapon sounds disappearing or distorted...etc.

    But luckily..no crashes..

But every time I push escape the Esc button I cringe a little...
