He was dying because sofia severed the bond between delta and eleanor so he was dying anyways.

The ending depends on what moral choices you've made in the game - whether you've saved/harvested the little sisters; killed, or let some people be, etc. One is a good ending, where Eleanor saves her mother, in another she kills her. There are two more, but I haven't experienced them (YET! )..

Eleanor sucks out the ADAM out of you, because as Subject_Delta said, you were going to die anyway. She can view all of Subject Delta's memories and experiences, because ADAM can store genetic memory as well.

well the other ones are pretty cool
like if you get neutral ending you get to chose wether for ellenor to drain your ADAM so you can always "be with her in memory and such" or you can chose to sacrafice yourself so she can live her own life and make her own decisions

thats because Ealanor can kill her or save her the ending piece the sun and little sisters comes from saving them but sofia can die or live its complicated visit here it might clear it up http://bioshock.wikia.com/wiki/Story_Tree
