    Game Won't Launch!

This is a rather bizarre problem. Last night I played Bioshock 2 for the first time. Single player worked fine. Played for 2 hours straight. Great.

Today, I come home, try to launch...and nothing. The Bioshock 2 emblem appears on my windows screen like it's loading, I see the CD check symbol on my mouse...then a black screen that lasts until I hit ESC or CTRL+ALT+DEL.

Multiplayer launched once when I right clicked. Now it won't launch at all.

I've updated my drivers. I've been trying for hours. No good.

    Specs:

    Windows Vista 64 Bit
    Radeon 4850
    4 gigs RAM
AMD Phenom II X4 940 Processor

I had a similar problem, but thats just cuz I hit Alt-Tab to get to windows, and when I went back in game, it only showed a black screen. Try hitting Alt-Enter to get it from Windows mode to Full Screen mode, or vice versa, might help.

    Juguard's suggestion is good,

Were you able to get the update in multiplayer?

Try also deleting the Bioshock folder in the Documents folder to see if this helps.

I got the game the night it came out... I have been playing it just fine with very little problems.. except that if I make too many saved games it slows the game down.. so I kept my max around 6 saved files.

Then... today.. that stupid patch came out... at first.. it downloaded and installed no problem at all. But then I had to go do some things.. so quit and saved.

Came back to play a few hours later... and first time running it.. made it to the part where it started to log into GFWL.. then crashed. had to reboot my computer.. couldn't even control alt delete out of it.

Then. Every time I try to run it.. it won't even get past the BioShock 2 logo that pops up as it loads the game... it crashes before I ever enter the game.. and gives me the following error. My video card (gtx280) is completely updated.. and I am up to date with all of vista's patches.

Please fix this... tonight! and release a patch that doesn't require going through stupid GFWL.. use that support section you have on the Bioshock 2 website. Thanks!

I am also very tempted to just uninstall.. and reinstall without the patch and just play it offline... If the only thing I lose are the stupid acheivements.. well.. the only people that care about those are xbox fanboys..

    Although I had alt-tabbed yesterday 3 times the Alt-Enter didn't work.

I was able to get the patch when I booted the multiplayer...but now it won't boot the multiplayer. That one just says an error has occurred and windows is shutting it down.

But the Single player still just gives me a black screen when it loads. Nothing else. This happened before and after the patch. Deleting the documents folder did nothing. Running in DirectX 9 mode only gave me an "Error has occurred, windows is shutting down Bioshock 2" without booting a black screen.

It's just bizarre that in less than 24 hours a game that worked 100% great would just not boot at all.

This is the solution I'm using...Play the single player and then if you really want to play multi, patch it and go to town.

Fixed it...turned out my color depth had been turned down from 32 bit to 16 bit. The game won't launch under 16 bit color, so that's why that happened. Hurrah! Good luck to all others having problems.

    Try this link:

That's where I found my solution.

How could you not notice that your desktop was at 16bit?

Well uninstalling, and NOT installing the patch works. Was finally able to play the game again.. and I hadn't run into any issues that needed patching to begin with.

    Back to loving the game...

And frankly.. who the hell buys bioshock for multiplayer anyways? LOL It is all about the awesome story and environment. Which I am again really enjoying.
