    Patch downloading issue

I'm raging pretty badly here. I've played about eight hours of the game so far after purchasing it from Steam. Multiplayer and single, everything worked great apart from one random crash that lost me an hour of progress. So I took a break for a day.

I came back to play (multiplayer) today, just now, and it told me I needed to install a patch. I said "Fine, whatever," and hit "yes." It took about five minutes to download and install, but then said it was complete and to restart BioShock 2. I followed the instructions and went through another small installing time, and before I could go to start Multiplayer back up, it launched single-player and asked me to download the patch. I can only assume it's the same one, since it took about the same amount of time to download and install as well. I followed the instructions, closing down BioShock 2 again, but then when it finished installing, it restarted single-player AGAIN and reinstalled the update.

It installed six times or so before I gave up and hit 'no.' Since you need Windows LIVE to even save in single player, let alone play online, I can't play at all. What exactly am I supposed to do?

(Honestly, was it worth making gamers that don't pirate go through this torture? I could have torrented it SO easily, but I thought I'd show some respect to 2K and buy it. I'm regretting that decision already.)

No responses in half an hour, I'd rather my question not get knocked off of the first page with no reply.

Does anyone have a fix for this at all? Or do I just give up on my $45 investment?

    Yup - same problem here.

I installed the patch, which actually took more like fifteen minutes, and then exited the program - and when I re-started, I had to go through the whole thing all over again. This is just plain silly.

No 360 controller out of the box, no widescreen support, a patch procedure that continues to loop around - wow, am I ever getting a bad taste in my mouth here.

I just wish that Bioshock 2's development had stayed at Boston and that Ken Levine had been in charge.

    This game is brutally bad.

Same thing here quite pi**ed off

$55. for a game I can't play & no one from tech cares. 6 ****** hours of this sh**. 2 friends got the iso torrent & have been playing all week. I saw the game at their house & bought it. BIG mistake, & I won't make that mistake again. First I had the, "release date check" problem, then then bsod. problem, then the crash at the desktop, & now the gfwl prob. Windows live is a night mare. 2K has no fixes just great, the mall won't take the game back so I'm supposed to do what? Another coaster.

Got enough angry faces? I only got annoyed when I went to the BioShock website, and had to SEARCH for ANY links to support. Then I found it, with a 'coming soon!' message by it. So I went to the forums, and got no support whatsoever. Well, techies, can you save your reputation by maybe REPLYING to me?

Believe me the odds of you playing much after a successful patch are actually lower. The patch has completely borked MP by removing the ability to skip the intro screen and removing any hold ability (charge plasmids, hack, fire a machine gun). Also many people report new crashing a freezing in SP after the crash ( I wouldn't know since i still can't get my single player game to run).

Hey Enigma Train, I took the same support ride you took. It ended with more angry faces. They must have had problems during beta, there are just to many to miss. Rep has been destroyed by ignoring us.

Yeah. Honestly I don't remember any other 2K games projects, but this makes me REALLY uncomfortable buying another game from this developer.

Cool. This is cool. I like being able to play through Dionysus Park and then getting raped by Microsoft. Cool.

The first Bioshock wasn't exactly a shining example of technical stability either. Though not having Live issues to contend with does give it an edge.

As to the OP. Try reinstalling GfWL and see if that helps. No clue if it will or not, but it can't hurt. I've seen people have this problem in other Live titles (Fallout 3 was a particularly bad offender), but don't recall seeing a good fix for it.

    @Enigma Train,

Sorry for the delay, have you tried downloadng the latest GFWL standalone distribution? Please also ensure you are signed out of other live services such as messenger etc.

Here is the link: GFWL 3.2

It looks like this is helping. I downloaded and installed GFWL 3.2, and Single Player worked, but the patch is applying in Multiplayer. If it works, thank you; if it doesn't, well, no one thought Multiplayer was going to be good anyways...

Yeah. Thanks for ameliorating the single player issue, but I still can't play multi-player for the same issue.

    Great.

There is a way around it

Make an OFFLINE GFWL user. It's easy to do. Start the game and click the red x when games for windows starts up. Hit the HOME key and select create a new user. There is a long paragraph you will see. Scroll to the bottom and there is a link to create an offline user account.

Then you will not be bugged about patches, because you will be playing not connected to the internet.

Games for windows live is the worst content provider in the world. From it's very roots the design is just horrible. I know this was done on purpose to get us to buy consoles and use console games. That's what games for windows live is all about on the PC. It's an attempt to destroy PC gaming.

Never purchase a game again that uses GFWL. It's just another Microsoft rip off utilizing bad code to force you to buy an xbox.

Being an offline user will not let me play Multiplayer ^_^

    Thumbs down

Pretty damn upset with this issue now. It's been 2 days now that I can't play a game I spent $50 on. I have done all the tips posted (update GFWL, restart, sign out of GFWL, etc, etc), but nothing will help. I still can not download the patch from GFWL and get the error

    ScreenShot of Error

This is getting F'ing ridiculous. I want this fixed now or my money back.

I am getting this exact same problem. I start the patch. It downloads and the end of patching i get a similar screen. The only difference is the Error Code:

    0x80070005
