Question Where is the weapon selection menu?!

In Bioshock 1 the shift key brought up a weapon selection screen that would pause the game so I could choose my weapon without getting killed.

What happened to that? I hate having to scroll through them all or trying to hit the right number key.

Is it there somewhere and I just can't find it or is it really gone?

    uhhh

not sure what the key is in the PC version, but it seems to be the same button for the 360 as it was in bioshock 1. O.o

Also, the game pauses when you open up the selection window =0
you can use that pause to change weaps, or use any EV or med kits.

So maybe it's just missing from the PC version then? Or is this a different selection menu that you are talking about? Because I have no idea how to get to a menu like that.

Yeah, If I would have know it didn't have the weapon select screen, I would have got it for PS3. Hopefully they patch this in, because it's too difficult for me to swap plasmids and weapons on the fly.

The PC UI and control scheme was designed from scratch this time and they dropped this menu because FPS games on the PC traditionally don't have it.

I was so disapointed when I realised there was no Selection Menu for PC. It was nice being able to pause and select the weapon/plasmid I wanted and then jump back into the fray. Personally, this was a major part of letting me use the environment to my advantage; I could decide what was the best weapon/plasmid to use at any given time during the middle of a battle.

Just wondering if there is any chance of this coming back in a patch?

Not having it pause is OK in most games, but not this one.

There are too many weapons and plasmid keys to bind one to each key.

I use an n52te (gameboard), and it doesn't have that many keys.

So, by the time I scroll through weapons and plasmids, I get hit a dozen times, especially with difficult foes like Big Sisters.

we want our plasmid selection menu, along with the game pause,
without it, the gameplay suffers a lot, and its transformed to some kind of "hit the right button in a rush several times" horror

the return of the plasmid selection menu is a must, is this the official place to leave a complain about the game?

I hope that wasn't the real reason they dropped the menu, because as far as FPS games go, Bioshock is a step outside the "traditional".

To be honest, the pause part of the Selection Menu isn't even that important to me (it was simply necessary for the full screen Selection Menu they used in BS1). I would even be content if there was a key I could push which would bring up a radial menu around my cross hair that I could then select the weapon/plasmid that I want with my mouse. Even this would be much better than the current amount of keys I need to be able to hit precisely to get the weapons and plasmids that I desire.

At the moment the only work around that I have is remapping the most used weapons and plasmids to my most accessible keys. The problem with this is I still lose the availability of several weapons and plasmids that I might of used in place of the more easily accessible ones because of the fear of hitting the wrong key in the hectic fun that are BS2 fights.

Would love to hear the opinion of the technical staff (as well as anyone else that has an opinion on the matter).

We actually had to make some significant changes to the HUD and the UI for the PC version. We made a decision very early on in the development cycle to drop controller support, and as a result we actually needed a specific UI team that was dedicated to bringing the UI up to scratch for the PC. The main things we changed were basically a redesign of the weapons and plasmid radials, to support actually using the mouse/keyboard for selection in those regards, and also, obviously, to PC, to make the PC-specific UI elements for the front end and also for in-game menus and the pause menu.

I appreciated the quote Doomed, but I don't see any information in it as to why the original Selection Menu (or a variant of) was completely removed from the game for PC. In my opinion, the "specific UI team" has done nothing but completely thwart support for selecting weapons and plasmids on the keyboard and mouse.

Give me the radial menus (without pausing the game) on PC and I'll be happy. XD

    Imagine this,

your standing in a large and unprotected area, four to five splicers directly in front of you. you see a puddle of oil to the left of them and a large pool of water just to the right of them. in this type of senario, the weapon selection menu would be fantastic! it would be easy, try to draw them into the puddle of oil first, burn them and as they run into the pool of water, zap them. But in bioshock 2, easier said than done. Good luck trying to find the electric plasmid in time to zap them. OH, and dont forget about the splicers that are behind you! . . . .to sum things up, your gonna miss out on an epic pwn quite frequently.

Several months since this game has come out and there is still no acceptable reason/excuse they removed a selection menu in any form for BS2. I've had BS2 sitting on my shelf not even half completed since that first couple times I tried playing it, and by the looks of it, on the shelf it will stay.

Would you care to explain why radials (or another form of selection menu) "wouldn't really work with this kind of configuration"?

Yeah, 16 of them. I don't think "quickly" can be used to explain trying to find that right key at the right time, especially when my plasmids are frequently in completely random spots.

Bottom line, I don't want to pause the game, I just want to be able to select which weapon/plasmid I want/need on the fly. The amount of keys are just too fidgety for me to have any sort of fun in the multiple choice combat situations BS2 offers. Especially with the ever changing plasmid slot problem (I haven't even bothered checking if this was fixed since the last time I was on this forum, as it still wouldn't make too much of a difference for me).

To say BS2 has "flow" is a drastic overstatement for players like me who became fixated on that selection menu in BS1. Yeah sure, I can kill anything this game has thrown at me with relative ease (hard, disabled Vita Chambers, etc), but I'm not having fun doing it seems I can't take advantage of the situations I'm given to take advantage of.

I guess 2K is another developer I've lost faith in after such bad design decisions and lack of support for their customers.

Footnote: I originally posted this in the PC Control flaw - input from 2k staff requested thread, and was informed that the thread was not even in the Technical Support area. I'm re-posting here because I believe this is a technical issue that I, and others, would like to be resolved to enjoy this game fully.

    - oh & don't hold your breath for a fix -

the 2K techs left here long ago, I don't think anyone from 2K even bothers to check in anymore....

I think the techs left because people kept giving them too much crap when they were trying to help people get it running as best they could, but all they got was ingratitude and insults.

Would YOU wanna log onto a place where all you got was grief and frustration?
(See, THAT was rhetorical. We learning yet?)

I just want to quote this for the idiots behind the scenes. (Yes, I said it, you're bloody idiots. It took you over a year to release Bioshock 2
    for Mac- that's beyond idiocrasy)

The reason people are asking for a weapon select menu is because selecting weapons on a keyboard is seriously retarded and confusing. 1. You can't switch the order of your weapons, and 2. Plasmas seem to switch by randomly when you find a new one. I went through have the goddamn game using my F1 key for Electro Bolt and after I get accustomed to it being there, it suddenly changes to F8 and my F1 are the stupid Bees that I rarely use- and you guys won't release a patch to fix this FLAW? What the hell is wrong with you? You schmucks make me appreciate the constant updates from Apple and Adobe that bug me twice a week.

There is a name for my pain... It is 2k Games support. Best game of the year/Worst customer service. You guys don't care about anyone and think you're so high and mighty that your games are perfect. You have an award winning game series so you just release what the hell you want and pay your customers demands no mind. I'm so frustrated at you morons. I can't begin to describe the rage I have for 2K. Whenever I have a headache, it's usually related to 2K Games.

I'm going to summarize it like this:
WHEN CUSTOMERS DEMAND UPDATES AND PATCHES- GIVE IT TO THEM.
It's simple supply and demand, but somehow you buffoons missed out on it.

They're bloody idiots and they deserve to be insulted. We're the customers- we're the reason they all own homes and drive Porsches. So yea, they're complete morons and I wish them the worst. Do you like money? I like money. We should totally hang out.
