Silent Crash on Load / No Error Message

It seems there are a few distinct crash-on-load errors occurring. I installed BS2 from Steam earlier today, and I have not been able to get it running. I got the CD key activation prompt upon first trying to run it, and since then I get the crash.

If I launch the Bioshock2Launcher.exe directly, the process runs in taskman for a few seconds then exits. Occasionally Bioshock2.exe can be seen for a split second but it disappears immediately.

If I launch Bioshock2.exe directly, I get the following error message:

    Code:
    BioShock2.exe - Application Error
The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005). Click OK to close the application.
Nothing appears in the Event log, dump, etc.

I did a test with the WinDbg tool. My brother was able to successfully install and run the game, so I had him do the same test. On my system, it appears to be crashing upon trying to load c:\windows\syswow64\dsound.dll . Please see WinDbg output below to compare. Loading the EXE into WinDbg, not even running it, generates a firstchance exception:

Looks like a possible issue with the display driver...

    Driver Version: 8.690.0.0
    DDI Version: 10.1

Obviously, this should have some information in there. Please try reinstalling them from http://www.ati.com

Also, it's showing HD5700 and HD3800. Please try disabling the 3800 and trying again.

Physically removed 3870 from the machine, no change.

Driver is a fresh install of ATI Catalyst 10.1. I can try uninstalling / reinstalling but since it appears the error is occuring after and not during the d3dx9 dll load, I don't think that's the issue (also please note there is no splash screen or any other UI that comes up other than the windows error msg)

Which other sound device are you using other than the headset? Also, please try installing the latest redist version of DirectX, released 5th Feb.

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

The DSound.dll is part of DirectX, so refreshing this should help with the issue too.

The only device actually in use is the USB headset. The other devices in the system are ATI HDMI Audio driver and Realtek HD Audio. The latter has been disabled in the BIOS, and I am still getting the same result.

I also did a full uninstall / reinstall of Radeon 10.1 drivers and installed the specified DX update, same results.

Every other game or 3d app I have installed runs fine. Incidentally the only other program I had similar issues with was Bioshock 1, but I could get that to run reliably by forcing it into DX9 mode.

I still have had no success getting this to work. Anyone else having this problem, please try going to the BS2 directory and running Bioshock2.exe directly. Do you immediately get an error? Apparently other people get a message saying to run the launcher, but I get a 0xc0000005 first chance exception.

I've tried a few ideas including totally removing / reinstalling ALL c++ redist files (including VS2008 distributions), removing/reinstalling GFWL, including new profile as recommended by another user. No luck there.

Also out of curiosity I tried running Bioshock w/o the DX9 flag. Previously I could only get it to run in DX9 mode (this is Windows 7 X64, formerly ATI 4800 series now ATI 5700 series). Other DX10 games and even DX11 work fine. With Bioshock 1 not forced to DX9 mode, I still get a crash, and it turns out it is a 0xc0000009 error. Can't say if it's related or not. I also don't know if it is a first-chance exception like BS2 since when I run Bioshock.exe in BS1, it goes through the Steam launcher.

Here is error code from BS1:

    Code:
Faulting application name: bioshock.exe, version: 1.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x474f5a3a
Faulting module name: bioshock.exe, version: 1.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x474f5a3a
    Exception code: 0xc0000005
    Fault offset: 0x00463b3f
    Faulting process id: 0xc0c
    Faulting application start time: 0x01caaa9083034045
Faulting application path: c:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\bioshock\Builds\Release\bioshock.exe
Faulting module path: c:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\bioshock\Builds\Release\bioshock.exe
    Report Id: c695f36a-1683-11df-89f3-001d7d0084fb
With BS1 I get the splash screen and a window pops up for a second, then an error message and event log. With BS2 it is completely silent if I run launcher, or only gives me a the 0xc0000005 error window with no other details if I launch the bioshock2.exe file directly.

Is a man not entitled to a working game? "No!" says 2k Games, "It must be buggy on launch!"

    Tried disabling antivirus etc?
Uninstalling all virtual drives programs? (like Daemon Tools, Alcohol...)

Yes I've tried practically all conventional ideas. Removing virtual drive, completely removing, driver cleaning and reinstalling video drivers, removing / reinstalling C++ redist files, etc.
