[Fixed] Failed to load saved game

I played about 3 hours then took a lunch break. When I started the game back up and tried to continue I got "Failed to load saved game". So I tried to load a saved file and got the same thing. My game is the Steam version, I am connected to Windows Live.

Can't really play the game if I'm going to loose everything every time I turn it off.

    Please help!

Hello? Tech's lets here something about this problem, I'm not the only one having it, and I see you posting about other simpler issues.

This is a huge deal breaker! The game is unplayable if you can't save your progress.

Please stop hiding from the hard issues and at least post that you have no clue what's wrong, but your looking in to it. POST ANYTHING to give the impression that you care.

Can you confirm whether you are using an online or offline profile. If you use an online profile, what happens if you try an offline profile?

This is by your My Documents folder not being set to default. The game will save to your new My Documents location. But it wont allow you to Load from it. Set My Documents back to its default location. Copy over your saves. Load game.. it will work. This is a problem with Unreal 3 engine games. Most developers don't fix it. And considering how terrible of a PC port this game is. I don't see it being fixed.

I'm logged in to GFWL, so I'm assuming it's online. If I don't log in there is no option to save anything. While logged in no save will load (quick, normal, autosave).

I just tested creating a offline (local) profile. The same thing happened. When trying to loaded a saved game it gives the message "Failed to load saved game". That is trying to load new saves that I did with the offline profile.

Are there any files in Documents\Bioshock2\Savegames, if so, what filesize are they? Is your Documents folder set to the default location on C:, or is this stored on another drive/partition?

The files in there are from my last test with the offline profile. Here is names and file size:

    2_9_2010_18_4_13.bsb 810kb
    2_9_2010_18_4_13.bsh 1kb

    2_9_2010_18_4_29.bsb 810kb
    2_9_2010_18_4_29.bsh 1kb

No my Documents are not located in the default C drive. They are in my F:\Bioshock2\SaveGames directory.

Sorry Dion, I didn't see your first post. But here's the issue. the "My Documents" folder is by default in the c:\Users\USERNAME\ but on my system I've moved my user folders to D:\Users\USERNAME\ on another physical HD. Moving the User Account is done when installing Windows 7, and can't be easily undone. To read more about the process you can follow this link: http://tuts4tech.net/2009/08/05/wind...ent-partition/

I have Bioshock 1 installed (steam version also) and it works perfect. So can't be all Unreal 3 engine games.

Ok, So here it is for anyone that is having this problem, due to moving the "My Documents" folder out of the default Users folder.

I created a new User Account in Windows, then tried BS2. The saves worked perfect! So Dion was correct, in part. As long as your "My Documents" is located in your User\USERNAME\ folder saves should work, even if you have moved your Users to a different partition or HD, using this method: http://tuts4tech.net/2009/08/05/wind...ent-partition/

My setup is a bit different being that by default all user accounts are in my D: drive, but then on top of that I moved the "My Documents" folder to the F: drive.

Now it's a minor inconvenience to have to switch windows users to play BS2, but I'll take it as long as I can get to playing!

Whats weird is the game can save the files to a New My Documents location.. But it cant access them. Im wondering if this is a problem with GFWL more then Bioshock 2. Since BS1 saved em to the same place ( including the new My Documents) and played fine.

Mass Effect (both versions) had the same issue, but Dragon age origins (both made by bioware) does not.

I am having the same problem and tried everything up to editing files. This issue is different in that it creates a file to save the games to, labels them properly and everything. For some reason the program refuses to load form these files.

Your QA sucks 2K. No really they suck. Just as much as Bioware QA sucks. You both make outstanding games then when it comes to something as simple as saving and loading the game you drop the ball. Hire OCD/ADHD kids next time! They'll do a better job at QA!

Ok, one more bit of info.

Incase you figured out that you can't load your saved games after many hours of playing because of this bug. After I created a new User Account in windows, I copied my saved games over to that new user account. I can now pick up right were I left off!

    So lets clear this up!

If you can not load saved games, and you have moved the location of your "My Documents" folder in Windows. You have a few options:

    1. You can move "My Documents" back to the default location.
    2. You can create a new User Account in windows, Then copy the "My Documents\Bioshock 2\Saved Games" folder from the original User Account to the New User account folder. Then Play BS2 from the new User Account.

I had to go with option 2, because my computer's folder structor is no where even close to default. Regardless it's working now, and I am able to pick up right were I left off when I discovered this issue.

Hope this is not overly confusing and it can help someone that has run in to the same issue. If you have any questions please post them, I'll try help from what I've learned here.

    He guys

I was having the same problem but I actually found something weird in my save games folder. For some reason the game was creating an extra file that was 0 kb with my save files. The game wouldn't load my files or save them, even started crashing going to the menu screen after re-starting everything. I decided to erase that file and the game started working again saving and loading all my files. Check your savegame folder to see if you have a similar file, at least that's the issue I was having. Good luck

I think there must be another reason for this problem as My "my documents" is not in the default location and I have had no problems loading or reloading saves, that's on two pc's one running XP and the other vista.

The ini file will be pointing to the wrong location for saves

    Edit the Bioshock2SP.ini file

    C:\users\*username*\AppData\Roaming\Bioshock2\Bios hock2SP.ini

    Find the line SavePath=Savegames

    Change to

SavePath="insert full save path" (eg: E:\Bioshock2\Savegames\)

    "[SaveGame]
    MaximumLevelSaveSizeBytes=2097152
    ThumbnailFilename=game:\System\savegame.png"

That is what I found. I edited that and no dice. I still get the same error.
I did not find a "SavePath=" line but I tried adding it and even editing the suffix of the last line. Still nothing.

Instead of these "buyer" fixes why can't you all fix the game! I buy games so I don't have to do crap like this, and I buy games to support y'alls hard work on a project.

    Thanks for trying at least.

I think that other (all?) GFWL titles have similar issues with saves when the Documents folder isn't where it's supposed to be, so maybe it's not necessarily 2K's fault, it could be Microsoft's.

It's an unreal 3 engine problem. Cause this problem exist on other unreal 3 games that don't use GFWL.

Maybe. Because I was thinking of GFWL titles that happened to be UE3 powered. So yeah, it's most likely an UE3 issue.
