    In-game hacking problems

    Hi,

I'm having difficulties hacking things in the second part of the Atlantic Line area (after being trapped by Lamb's splicers). Although I can initiate the hack, no key I press has any effect.

I should say that I've rebound the keys to BioShock 1 settings, which made much more sense, so that 'F' is now First Aid while playing.

Same, I'll copy paste what I put from what I thought was the bioshock2 forums.

So, I've changed around the horrible button scheme given to us to something usable by people who actualy play games. The ctrl was rerouted to F, as in the first bioshock and away from the most often used Vent PTT key. The Use key was Routed to E, which for some reason was not bound to anything. So I get to the hack maching launch my dart and wait till the arrow passes over the green and hit F as the little tutorial tells me. Oh...it trys to activate a health kit..maybe It means E?

Try E. E does nothing, 5 seconds later, Zap, just like with F. Space bar? Zap. Enter? Zap. Right click? Another Dart Zap. Left Click? Plasmid Zap, and then the machine zaps me.

I seem to be out of buttons...except buyout which I refuse to do...so how do I hack this thing?

Also. Why would you make the left hand power use the right key and the right hand power use the left key by default?

I have to say, your description of the situation was exactly as mine. I zapped myself around 10 times before I found out to simply click the left mouse again to make it work. The control scheme on bioshock 2 is very...very bad. I changed EVERYTHING back to the way bioshock 1 was. Not because I was familiar with the setup, but because it worked, and didn't make my hand reach all the way over to "L" to listen to a dang tape.

    A shambles of a game

Well, that tears it. At a later point the player is required to do another remote hack to proceed... and I can't. There's no way forward.

    This game is a shambles.

If you revert back to the default control settings does the hacking work?

It does when you reset to default then use the specified button, but using the defaulted button scheme is, at the very least, cumbersome.

So resetting controls to default fixed the issues, however, the default control setup is horrible.

    Resetting to default works.
Resetting to default, restarting game, setting custom controls and then re-loading does not resolve the problem.
Would have to reset to default whenever you wanted to hack, since hacking is impossible outside of the default key binding configuration.

This issue also seems to overlap with looting bodies. Resetting to default allows you to loot bodies again. If you set up a custom key binding configuration it works until you quit the game and reload. Then you can no longer loot again until you reset to default.

Same for me; cannot hack with alternate keybind configuration.

  10. #10
No matter what you bind " Use " to...you will still need to press F for hacking.

I rebound F to E and can pick up stuff, loot bodies, lift little sisters, etc using E, but I still need to press F for hacking....no biggie..

    So some updates:

As long as you use the "fire weapon" key to hack, you can bypass this. Also, every time you log in you need to rebind your "Use" key to fix the looting issue. That should fix the problems until they patch this crap.

Yup, i cant hack either guys....i am just glad i'm not the only one

I take it you all d/l it off steam right?

Ok so I fixed it, just use the F key as the regular binding. then use whatever you want as the secondary binding(button) you still have to use f when you hack though, but you dont have to use it as your USE key.

I've just remapped the primary USE key to F and secondary key to ' (the key I always use in FPSs for 'use') and I still cannot get past the first remote hack. The pop-up tells me to hit the 'F' key over the green but nothing happens when I do.

I brought this game 2 days ago and I haven't been able to hardly play it at all .... not what I'd expect for paying £30 for it!

    Same Issue

I'm also experiencing this issue. As far as I'm concerned, this game is currently unplayable.

  15. #15
    Playable, use left mouse click.

It's been mentioned 2-3 times on this thread now.. left clicking should be just as precise/quick, if not even quicker. It's pretty much taken-for-granted that you can handle quick clicking cuz you're playing this fps game

No, dont touch the default (Use) binding(F key) you need to bind the alternate binding next to it.....

Leave F as the default key, then bind whatever key you want as the secondary binding.

You will still have to use f to hack, but you can use your normal use key for everything else. This should enable you to progress through the game

That's what I've done - F is the primary USE key and ' is secondary (UK keyboard - key just right of L). Left clicking doesn't working either. Nor do about 20 other keys/buttons I have tried.

Before my first post I had ' as the primary USE key and in the help popup it said "press the (empty) key to hack" (no key graphic). Once I mapped F as primary this help popup showed the F key in that message, so I thought I was getting somewhere. Unfortunately not...

    Please fix it 2K.

i USE F as my forward key and change use to the H key. In game it says press B to hack,,, once the hack tool comes up it says press F to stop the needle. all i do is walk forward when i push f and H does nothing, I tried every key on my keyboard to make the needle stop. non of them work. same thing happens when i try to pick up a little sister or adopt one or save one.

I will not change my keys around i been playing this way for 10 years. Is there another way,, say INI fix for this?

    Yes there is:

    http://www.breakitdownblog.com/biosh...eybinding-bug/

It solved it for me and I'm able to get past the first remote hack - can't be bothered to go any further though, at the moment, as the game has pi$$ed me off.

  20. #20
I'm glad it worked for you, the path they have listed for win 7 does not exist on my computer. nor do any of the other paths they have listed except the one that does nothing.

The AppData folder is hidden - you will have to set 'Show hidden files, folders and drives' in the Window Explorer 'Folder and search options'.

Well, I found this forum today, since I just bought the game (BioShock 2) a couple nights back, only to find out that it had some bugs, and now I have since found it's more like many bugs, but oh well LOL

I found this thread as I was stuck on the very first door trap game thingy when I soon realized life was sucking big time and I couldn't get things to work.
Luckily, after reading all the replies here, I have now managed to at least get the game playable enough to sort of move on, I use the LMB to do all the things that the F is spose to do and it works out fine, as I also am like all of you, I have my own better key bindings, and like all of you also, I have found that they should of kept with the default BS v1 key commands, as that was basically what I had to reset all of mine too, but like we now all have found, it's all hit and miss.
Mine, I use the Space bar for Use and the E for Jump and the F for Health and now the LMB for the keys shown you to use in the Hacking Tool game.

Anyway, thanx all, I felt somewhat better knowing it wasn't just my system having all these issues, and there are many LOL

I just had to force a reboot because right after the area where you open the door and move past the train thing into the next area, all of a sudden my whole screen went to c r a p o l a LOL
You know, all giant triangles and squares and all sorts of who knows what.

    Crazzzzzy man, crazzyyy..............md

even funnier thing is I complained about this when the game came out over a month ago and still no help from tech guys or a patch to resolve the problem... the file they talk about is there but it does nothing to change what they say to change. I downloaded the game from direct 2 drive and i dont think the put the folders in the same place.

My computer does not hide files from me btw. Im not a moron. I find appdata just fine. the file that is not there is bioShock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Slashere try searching the computer for "Bioshock2SP.ini" . Once found you should have the location to the files and folders you have been looking for.

  26. #26
well i tried to find that file to no avail, I also double checked the show hidden files and folders and thats fine, I have another drive and checked that (i know its on my c drive though)

Click on start > Start search and type in

    %appdata%

Enter the Bioshock2 folder in there, and the file will be in there. NOTE: you might not see the .ini at the end if you have file extensions hidden.

  28. #28
As i said the path is not there, Bioshock2 is not in appdata i have a couple of screenshots that will show you what i mean,,, as you can see yes bioshock2 is installed the shortcut is on my desktop.

This is very strange. If you have started the game and changed the settings then it must have created the INI file somewhere on the computer. The file is created on startup.

Can you confirm if you have the disc version or download version of the game. If download where was it purchased?

  30. #30
Downloaded from Direct 2 Drive like i Said.

I played though the game 1 full time to the end and started a second game (till i got to a part i had to hack again and just couldnt go any farther on principal)

No problems besides some strange lazer effect from the incinerate plasmid (fixed with a new GFcard)

Kis, Jamie, do either of you know if there will be a "serious" patch coming soon, as in, sooner then later?
I'm on W7 and the things has more problems then you can really count, well, not quite that bad, but it feels like that.

It for, some odd reason I can't even imagine, it randomly closes the window down to minimize and you have to click it to get back into the game.
Now this wouldn't be all that bad of an issue, other then it sucks in general to keep putting up with that, but the problems with it doing that most of the time are that it tends to want to do it right when you are startinhg to get into scary places, fights or about to need to change weapons fast on the fly and hit the health key rapidly or some other things that need to be done in the middle of some on coming battle.
So, when you have to maximize it again, you really REALLY better be ready for what ever the heck is about to kill you that maybe you didn't get to see right at the second it suddenly minimized on you.
Not a good thing to deal with.

That and of course random screen issues that litterally scamble eggs up your whole computer to the point to cause a force reboot.
And of course the not mapping keys correctly, which really seems strange, since that area of things is (let's face it) thee most basic of gaming features and shouldn't of even been allowed to be put out in that sort of condition.
If you need better beta testers, I'd be more then willing to test future version for you, I have plenty of beta testing skills from beta testing for years with several other programs out there, so I am good at it
    Seriously, think about that.

Also, is there some base place that people can go to to download patches?
If anyone here knows of such a place, please let me know, as when I tried to find patches, they don't seem to even be listed anywhere on the BioShock actual site and I end up going to other sites that want me to click on this then that and then something else just to get to some aledged patch that I tend to not trust as being real.

thanx for your time and I love this game a ton and waited months for this version, so I sure woiuld like to be able to just play the game without this many bugs.

How have you purchased your copy of Bioshock2? Have you bought it on retail dvd or through a direct download service?

Officially I can only point you to download the patches from the in-game Windows Live service. If you have any trouble downloading them please post the error messages you are receiving.

With regards to your minimizing issues, do you have any GUI modifications for windows such as windows blinds? Do you also have any programs which when alerted brings the task to the front of your desktop such as an im service firewall or antivirus?

I'd strongly reccomend to try stripping down any uneeded background apps to help with this specific issue.

    Thanx Cris for the reply

Yes, I bought the program straight from Direct2drive download site (or what ever that saite is called.
Meaning, it's all legal and all that
I don't see any sort of messages though, like error messages, just things happen and thats how it's been.
I WISH that the thing would tell me where to find patches at?
I downloaded the only one I could find, which I can't even tell if it's a modern patch or older one or what and so far have not even attempted to install it, since I can't trust it.
The patch I was able to download is 1.0.0.1.
But, I've seen that sposedly there is some newer patch out there that is 1.0.2 or something like that?

I'll check for any message thingies that might be popping up from backgrounds or something and see what I can find though.

I'll be back later with the only link I was able to find, which I think came from the Direct2Drive site, but I really don't remember where I seen it at, as I've been through many sites, gaming sites, 2K site, I have no idea where to go anymore to find out about updates?
I'm signed up for the news letter, never have seen one yet,so no news about any patches coming out.

    thanx............................md

In terms of updates we best suggest when on the main menu of the game to press the "home" key to bring up games for windows. As long as your logged into a Live! enabled account it should check your version for updates and ask you to install them as neccesary.

If you have any third party updates or modifications this may not work correctly. If this is the case we reccomend a fresh clean reinstall from D2D and install the updates in-game through Windows Live!

    Hope this helps!

    Lightbulb

    Ohhh... OK.
I DO always see something that shows up but for rather a short time during the booting of the game and I pretty much never see what it says or don't realize to be ready to read fast when that message pops up and by the time I notice they are showing a HOME button, by then I have basically lost the alotted time to read what the message says and so far have not found a way to re-read such popup messages to ever find out what they say? LOL

Sorry, guess I'm just not a speed reader or something and let's face it, I am not even staring at the bottom of the screen when things are loading up, I'm looking at the center getting ready for the login thingy to popup, hurry up and let me play.

I'll figure out what ever that HOME button does and get my updates, what ever they are right now and thanx much for this info.

I'll let ya know how things work out for me too.

    Talking

Well, wow!, thanx, something all went good this time around LOL
I still never had not even a split second of time to get to read what the hell those whoosh sounding popups are attempting to tell me, they pop in and out so freeking fast there is just no way to read what they say, not without pracicing several times, byt closing out and restarting several times to try and read maybe part of a word or just one word LOL

But, with that said, for some reason, today when I went to log in, I didn't do a single thing to make anything happen.
When it did it's usual startup thingy with the whoosh sounding popups and like that with the login window poping in and out, it just deceided to this time pop up a new window that asked me straight out, there is a new update for you, do you want to get that now?
So of course I said yes and let it do it's thing and it all did what ever and eventually I was in the game andAFTER all taht already game loading up and now running bit, I was able to hit the HOME key and got to see all teh things I kept hearing others refer to, but never anyone state how and where they had been finding such things?

Now I know, so there ya go.
Thanx and for the next patch, slow those popups down so a human has enough time to actually READ the dern things instead of just always having to say, whoa, what ever that was, oh well?

OK, back to the game, just had to get right back to you to say thanx as well as give you some of my feedback/thoughts on some of this stuff.

OK, well, I should of waited a bit longer before posting that great news, as I really didn't get to the point of "playing" the game, even though I was in the Game Menu area and all that and everything else looked as though things were working, but as soon as I clicked to play Single Player and finish the game I was in, it doesn't even get to the game part, buty instead pops this message up every time:

    http://www.md-arts.com/scrn/BioShock...Message_01.JPG

Soooooo....................... what do I do now????

I know what I'll be doing whilst I wait for a reply, which is to uninstall (for the third time) and reinstall (also the third time) and then see if things play like they currently do and if so, try again to install the patch.

ly next time, I think I'll look into seeing if they let you download the patch by itself on it's own, instead of that thingy doing it's little "auto-updating", which may or may not be running into problems and not letting me know or may simply be still a bad patch.

Sorry guys, thought I was on a good path there for a bit

Will get back to you and let you know how things go, of course

There may have been a corruption within the Xlive folder (this place holds your account information and update info for Bioshock 2). If you are using Vista/7 please try the following steps.

Open your "programs and features" list from the control panel, and uninstall Games for Windows Live.

Once uninstalled try renaming/moving or deleting your profile data. To do this

    - Hold the Windows key and R together to bring up the Run command.

    - Within the run command type the following: %localappdata% and press ok

    - Open the Microsoft folder then rename/move or delete the Xlive folder

Once done restart your machine and reinstall the latest version of Games for Windows from the following link: http://www.gfwl.com

When finished please try installing the patch again, please let me know if this helps you out.

    Chris
