Crash during loading

Hello,
My game crashes during the loading screen for the first level. Didn't experience any problems installing (and reinstalling) and I've been able to see the intro movie once, but since then the same memory cannot be written error comes up (instruction 0x10ce9d5f referencing memory 0x00000000 if that means anything to anyone).

DxDiag info below (the driver is the ATI legacy and the newest one available at time of writing):

Hi Xael

If you are after a quick fix you could try to run BS2 as a Directx 9 application.
That seems to be working for some.

Method is simple.

Start button / Games / Right click your Bioshock icon in the next window and chose "Play as DirectX - 9"

I know it's not the Ultimate fix, but it might just get you off home plate so to speak.

(oh damn you are running XP .. to do that you have to alter the extension on the shortcut slightly so it will run as DirectX - 9)

It's a simple alteration and is covered in the Original Bioshock forums if you care to go take a peek, it shouldn't be too difficult to find.

Thanks for the reply but I'm running Windows XP, isn't DirectX 9 the only option?
I know the DX 10 options are greyed out under options in game.
Just in case it isn't however, as I didn't ask for the shortcuts to be installed is there another way of doing this?

ooo Yes quite so Kris. If I'm not mistaken that's quite a vintage Graphics Card you have there Xael. If you want to be running a reasonable game with all the pretties, it might be worth investing in a new Graphics Card.

I know what you are thinking..."A new card just to play 1 game"! are you mad?

..and you are totally within your rights to call the men in the white coats to take me away.

But simple fact is games are only going to get prettier and more graphics intensive. You would be in essence investing in your ability to play future games as well.

Just a little food for thought.

actually my friend we fix the problem last night.....you have to update the nvidia driver does not matter wat direct x is running

Yes the card is getting old and I have the game on lowest settings, but I can play recent titles such as DA:O and ME2 with no problems. Didn't think that BioShock 2 was going to be that graphics heavy.

its an update issue.....go to windows update and u should see otional update....if you dont got to your cards site....

Also make sure you have nothing open in the background that could be causing issues.

Close background applications - Disconnect from the internet. Start > Run > msconfig > OK > Startup tab > Disable all > Apply > Close > Restart your PC when prompted. When your PC has restarted please close any windows that open and move on to the next step below. Before you reconnect to the internet I suggest that you go back into the MSCONFIG and click on select all to go back to your regular startup or just select the programs from the list that you wish to start when your PC does, for example firewall and anti-virus.

If you'd bothered to read my original post you would see that it is not a NVIDEA card but an ATI one and that the driver is the latest one available.

I've upgraded my ATI video card and it's drivers but the same error is occuring. Any other ideas?

I got the same problem with an NVIDIA card and i cant play multipalyer in fullscreen but in windowed its working but just the multiplayer
