Crashes to desktop as windows live tries to log in

    First, the specs and stuff;

    OS: Windows 7
    Processor: Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3ghz
    Memory: 4096mb

    Display
Video Card: NVIDIA Gefore GTX 260
    Video Memory: 876mb
Driver Date: well I downloaded and installed the latest nvidia drivers earlier and rebooted.

Okay so I'm getting a white screen and a crash to the desktop as it attempts to log me into games for windows live after I enter the password. I've tried running it in DX9 mode, I've tried running as administrator and I've updated my nvidia drivers (as mentioned). The thing is though that it worked fine (40-50fps for reference) the first time I played it but it crashed when I tried to bring up a menu with 'esc' and hasn't worked since (and that time I did log into games for windows live too)

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hello. I also have this problem.

While it is logging in to GFWL, it crashes.

    CPU: I7 920 2.66GHz
Video Card: GTX 280 1GB OC
    Audio: Logitech G35 Headset
    RAM: 6GB
    OS: Windows 7

I am having pretty much the same problem

I was able to play a bit without a profile (it eventually froze however) But trying to log into GFWL would freeze the entire thing

I eventually tried to get it to log in automaticly, it would, however it never makes it to the loading screen

    It's very fustraiting, my Specs
Windows Vista is my operating system
    Q9400 CPU,
    4GB DDR2 RAM,
    Asus Maximus Formula X38 motherboard
    Ati radeon hd 4870

Only difference is im not getting a white screen, mines going black and crashing

Well yeah, it's black for me, not white.

But also, I am able to login on the main scree, but when i click "Singeplayer" (is it?) it crashes.

So it isn't exactly GFWL that crashes it, it's something when it loads the actual main menu with the options and stuff on.

Mine did go to black, can't imagine it matters much though. Also I reckon this is a windows 7 problem?

    same problem

Made an account just to mention this...

It's not just Windows 7- i'm running this game on Windows XP. My computer isn't great, I'm running it on minimum specs- but last night I logged in at 1.00 a.m. GMT to play it on release and it ran fine. I managed to play for about an hour, got up to the train bit. Then as I was turning the game off it got the infamous error message. I thought nothing of it as I was going to bed anyway. This morning, I get on the computer, turn on BioShock 2. Menu system loads fine, I click singleplayer, GFWL tries to log in and it blackscreens. So no, don't think it's W7 specifically- maybe an actual game bug or something? GFWL is horrible anyway.

Edit: Forgot to post specs... I'm running just above minimum specs, although I don't think that's the problem.

OS: Microsoft windows xp professional (5.1, Build 2600)
    Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+, MMX, 3DNow (2 CPUs)
    Memory: 2048RAM

    Display
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT
    Video Memory: 512.0 MB
    Driver Date: 14/07/2009

    Sound
Sound Card: Sound Blaster Audigy (doesn't have an actual spec name, for some reason.)
Driver Date: 07/07/2005 (I know it's old, but I ran the test and it's working perfectly :P)

    Hi,

Same problem here, game crashes when clicking on Solo Play, I can play when I'm disconnected from GFWL, but of course I can't save without it so that's totally useless.

I've tried the same things than Mrjimmy and game still crashes.

    My specs:

    Windows 7 ultimate 64bits
    E8400@3.6Ghz
    8800GTS 512Mb with latest driver
    4Gb DDR2 RAM

    Hope we'll have some answers

(Sorry if I made some mistakes writing English)

True, I was always Shifty on it, and this latest bug has just killed off any chance of me giving it another go

Kinda glad more people have had problems with it, doesnt mean its simply just me,

I was able to run it without a profile for a while, got to the Big Sister fight and it just froze immediatly,

Messing around with multi player i was able to run it, didnt get too far however (wanted to play single player)

Tried everything, Even deleting the file in the big help topic pinned on the board, and nothing

Here is a mini-solution to what i've found.

    Delete everything in here.

    C:\Users\*Username*\Documents\Bioshock2

Then reload. (If you wish, backup the files).

For me, the game has now loaded and played the intro and starting off. But it'll most likely crash at the point where others are crashing too.

To make matters worse I just ate a jelly bean that turned out to be the worst thing I've ever tasted (it was one of those bad flavours).

Also I hope that the guys at 2K take note of these issues

Same problem here. Worked fine last night when I installed it and started playing. Didn't even get an error message when I quit. Turned on the comp this morning and now logging into Windows Live sends it all to hell.

This sounds similar to my experience. I installed the game (via Steam), ran it, logged into GFWL and started a new game. I got as far as the first hacking bit, was having trouble making that work, hit ESC to see whether I was pressing the correct key. Game crashes.

On restart, if I hit ESC during the credits videos, immediate crash to desktop. If I let them run, once they finish, crash. It looks like it is getting logged into GFWL successfully though (I have it tagged to auto login).

The interesting conundrum is, who do I file a support request with? 2K, Steam or Microsoft?

I hate to complain but I'm guessing that we won't be playing the game for about 3 days, like last time

Downloaded the latest version without any problems, and the game even let me sign into my account, but as soon as I hit "Single Player," it crashed again.

I've already updated GFWL about 3-4 times today, I can assure you that it did'nt change anything...

Another idea? :/ Friend of mine is playing since about 7hours and had no crash at all, I don't understand anything, but GWFL is the WORST thing designed by Microsoft, yeah, even worst than Windows Vista...

Yes -- same here. I've updated GFWL, tried uninstalling and re-installing GFWL, so far nothing seems to work.

    same problem here... again.

I can remember a time, where single player games didn't need an online registration and where you could play them WITHOUT being connect to the internet.

Stupid marketing ideas ruine gameplay with bugs.

    Quick update for me:

I purchased the game through Steam -- and it turns out that I'm only experiencing this problem when I try to launch through Steam.

If I go directly to the Bioshock2Launcher.exe, I am able to run the game without a problem. I can log into GFWL.

The only downside, I no longer have the Steam overlay or connectivity.

You can find the Bioshock2Launcher.exe in
    <Drive Letter>\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\bioshock2\SP\Builds\B inaries

    First off, technical specs

    OS: Windows Vista 64
Processor: Intel Pentium Duel CPU 3.2 ghz
    Memory: 4094mb RAM

    Display
Video Card: NVIDIA Geforce 8800 GT
    Video Memory: 2287mb
    Driver Date: Newest drivers

I too am having the same problem, every time I boot up the game I get to the start screen, click Single Player and when I try to sign in to GFWL it freezes and says Bioshock 2 has crashed. Tried updating GFWL with no success, going to try the other solution of deleting my document folder for Bioshock 2

I tried that earlier but it didn't work, although I've got a disc copy of the game

Same problem for me, here's all the details I can think of:

First time sign-in and activation, game worked fine.

If I get signed in before the intro movies finish (either because of auto-sign-in, or pressing home then signing in), then the game crashes (screen is black at this point) before the menu screen.

If not signed in before the intro movies finish, I get to the menu screen, and as long as I don't sign in (i.e. ignore the prompts) I can get the game started - but obviously I can't save. If at any point, I sign-in, the game crashes with the GFWL login overlay.

If I get in-game, signing in sends me back to the menu screen and crashes, while signing-in then signing-out sends me back to the menu screen without crashing (but again; can't save).

    *is tired of typing sign-in*

    Happens with:
    Online GFWL profile
Online GFWL profile in offline mode (internet disconnected)
    Offline GFWL profile

Error message is (maybe not word for word - it disappears quickly): Bioshock 2 has stopped working -- Checking for solutions

I tried the following and none worked:
    Updating GFWL client
    Force DirectX 9
    Delete "Bioshock2" folder from "%AppData%"
.exe Compatability Mode: XP, 2000, Vista

    Specs:

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
    Processor: Athlon X2 5000+ 2.6GHz
    Memory: 2GB

    Video Card: nVidia 8800GT

    AppName: bioshock2.exe AppVer: 1.0.0.1 ModName: bioshock2.exe
    ModVer: 1.0.0.1 Offset: 003e9bf2

that's the exact error message, if anyone's interested.

    btw

Okay guys I've figured out which file in particular is the problem one, it's the 'AUTOSAVE*username*.bsb' (and take note of the .bsb part as there's a nearly identical file next to it with .bsh at the end) file in the user/documents/bioshock 2 folder.

Now unfortunately taking this file away from the folder still takes away your save game but I hope this might be something to someone? Also I was wondering if any manual saves (if you can do those) still work after deleting the autosave files (whilst still preventing crashing of course)?

I'm glad it worked for you, but removing said file did nothing for my game. I deleted the exact one (.bsb) and still got the crash after trying to log into LIVE. To answer your question, however, I doubt that deleting that file would get rid of any manual saves you have.

Found a fix, but it's not pleasant if you've already made progress on your first save.

Delete the Bioshock2 folder in My Documents, then start the game and all is well.

After that, to check, I started a new game, saved, then quit then started the game again.

    Works flawlessly now! (touch wood)

If anyone else is having the issue, right-click the Bioshock2\Savegames\ folder and make sure it's not read-only. If it's not, verify that the files inside are not read-only either

Now I kinda wish I hadn't started that other thread, then again both fixes could be useful? Heh heh

Sicne I'd only made about an hour's worth of progress, I decided I'd test this out for everyone (Though I seem to be late in that regard). It does work! I even got to a point where it autosaved and then closed the game. When I restarted, everything was still fine.

One odd problem is that it seems to take me several tries to ever get into GFWL, even though I've made it an exception on my firewall, but that might be a local problem.

  34. #34
whats weird for me is that it always says I'm logged in offline..yet FO 3 etc automatically log me in to GFWL. ( Just checked)

    No biggie...saving is just fine...

  35. #35
Hurray, it's a christmas miracle. I missed the read-only fix and deleted the whole BioShock2 folder from My Documents (as well as the one from %AppData%, you know, to be sure) and it *seems* to be working. Thankfully had only played 15 mins or so in.

    Thanks guys.

Now, if only I could make my key binds stick with the remote hack tool.

I think there must be two separate issues I've seen. This is an event log entry from earlier today, when trying to login to Live from within the game:

I subsequently cleaned my backup directory, removed and reinstalled the GFWL runtime, and now start GWFL before starting Bioshock 2. It now starts up OK and can load backups.

The last post is close and on the right track

This might seem a bit much to go through but the problem bilos down to being a Microsoft live issue. I have done this and the problem is solved.

    1. first make sure u are signed out of all other locations in msn live.
    2. disable auto sign in when bioshock starts, if you dont u will not be able to get past the bioshock2.exe stopped error.
    3. Delete the Bioshock 2 folder in your documents folder as stated by other post. restart the game.
    4. Play until you have reached the second vita chamber (the first is right when u come to after intro. At the 2nd vita chamber hit escape and try to save your game. This should cause bioshock2.exe to fail once more. ctrl+alt=del and click task manager this will minimize your locked game ans you can click close on the message.
    5. At this point you have played long enough for your game to realize it needs an update from microsoft it self. ok the up date and alow to finish.
    6. Delete the bioshock 2 folder agaain from your documents folder and restart the game.

This is how it worked out on both my desktop pc and my alienware laptop and I have been playing ever since.

Hope this works for everyone else and good luck.

    MSN is the problem

They cant help it, they would rather fix after release than dedicate the time to proper testing.... they do it alot... this is the third microsoft games error I've been thru with their crap....

Delete the Bioshock2 folder in My Documents, then start the game and all is well.

After that, to check, I started a new game, saved, then quit then started the game again.

    Works flawlessly now! (touch wood)
Thanks Otester! This worked for me; I've spent 10 hours over the last 2 days trying to be able to play and save and singleplayer. Thanks for posting!
