    Instant crash on startup

Running windows xp, meet system requirements, etc.

The game crashes instantly upon attempting to start it. I see a brief flash of what appears to be the outline of a window, then nothing. Task manager shows the launcher launching bioshock2.exe, which climbs to about 100MB ram and about 50% cpu and crashes. No errors.

Fully updated motherboard, cpu, graphics card, and sound drivers.

Does not get to logo screen at all.

    Same Problem

I'm experiencing the exact problem. Same window pops up for just a second, and then crash. Running Windows XP Prof. too. Just updated motherboard, soundcard, and video drivers.

Do you have AA turned on in your video driver (override or enhance application settings for Nvidia)? That was causing a crash for me .

No I do not have any AA/AF enabled (all set to application preference). Also, Catalyst AI is disabled. Attempted modifying the ini files to start in windowed mode, with many settings disabled, alternate sound device, etc. Still nothing. Game will not start.

    gunn & Bianathon -

Can you double check your video drivers at www.ati.com

Also make sure you have the latest Direct X files from microsoft

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displayLang=en

sp3rial - Your video drivers also look out of date however you need to check at www.nvidia.com

I've done both. my graphics card is a legacy card that only gets quarterly driver updates. I have the latest quarter's version. Also, I've installed the feb2010 directx update multiple times to no avail.

After several reinstalls I merely get a temporary black screen and a crash immediately after that. Still cannot get ingame.

Furthermore, the game does not seem to honor any changes made in the ini files. Changing startup to windowed and altering the resolution does not seem to make any difference whatsoever. The game still attempts to start fullscreen, flashes a blackscreen, and closes.

One thing I'll make mention of though: I installed the game on my I: drive, not my C: drive. COuld that have any affect? Was the game not designed to be installed on different drive letters? I've seen this before, although I doubt it's the case.

isn't it possible that the folder is somehow reset to read only constantly? I'm not sure about xp. But isn't there a "run as admin" option?

Neither MP nor SP launchers work for me. Both crash after starting.

EDIT: And that makes three of us with the same soundcard driver. Coincidence?

For my SP launcher, it flashes the small Bioshock 2 logo, then a quick black screen for about a second, and then crashes.

My MP launcher crashes shortly after double-clicking the .exe

I think you're definitely on to something with the Realtek soundcard. May be the prime suspect???

Just the typical Windows error report, "BioShock 2 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

    bump!
    steam pre-order
    downloaded
    installed
went to launch the game and absolutely nothing happens

    OS:Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    Processor:Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU6600@2.40GHz
    Memory:2048MB RAM

    Video Card:ATI Radeon HD 3870
    Video Memory:1275 MB
    DriverDate: 9/23/2009 17:00:58

    Onboard sound(Intel 975xbx mobo)

I haven't done anything to the game at this point other than hit the launch button and enter the serial number. I double click on the game in "my games" list. It gives me the option for Bioshock2 or Multiplayer. Selecting either one results in....nothing...no load screen, no window...nothing....

also, just updated my video drivers as of about 30 seconds ago...

edit edit edit: a friend of mine is in game...when I click launch and enter single player it tells him that I have entered the game. I still get nothing on my end, no logo, no screen flicker, nothing, but then about ten seconds after that it shows me leaving the game....

I registered just to say that it definitely works. Seems like everyone else just decided to play instead of update anyone on the problem.

I was having the same issue as everyone else (Creative Xtreme Gamer SC though) and tried a few solutions on this thread and the last one did it. Setting it to compatible with Windows 2000 works. Thanks to whoever you are.

    *edit*

GOt a few seconds of "Big Daddy" control and then I hit another crash.

JustCabal try this for the steam version

    follow the below path:-

    C:\ Program Files \ Steam \ Steam Apps\ 'user or Common' \ Bioshock2 \ Builds \ Release

    - In the release file you will find a file named bioshock2.exe
    - right click on this file and select send to > desktop (create shortcut)
    - Go to the desktop and right click the shortcut and select Properties
    - select the 'Compatibility'
    - click on the check box where it says 'Run this program in compatibility mode for:'
    - select each of the available options in turn checking the games performance after each selection.
    - after you have selected each compatibility option, click apply, then ok.

Always run the game from this shortcut.

    Red face

Hi. Don't want to hijack or anything but since we got this thread going on and my problem is pretty similar I'd thought I dump my issues here as well.

I was able to start the game and register my cdkey to my gfwl account and then play. I got up to the part where you get your first plasmid and go through a little bit of combat then I went to save and it crashed. After a few minutes I restarted the game from where it started crashing on the log in to GFWL.

I have the steam version so you know. Now when I launch it, the game crashes right after the credits in the beginning. I tried launching from the folder and it crashes. I ran admin mode and it got to the menu for the first time in like 20 tries but it crashed when I clicked on singleplayer, it was able to log into gfwl fine though because on the previous try I put it on auto-login.

I did the usual steam stuff like deleting the blob and verifying cache. I defragged and restarted. Not sure what else to do.

    My hardware consist of i7-860(P55), 8gigs DDR3 1600, Ati 1GB 5850

I don't have any accessories installed on my pc aside from my headphones. All of my hardware is up to date on drivers.

    [edit]
I forgot to say I was using Windows 7 64bit

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and the retail version of BioShock 2 I got at Best Buy today. After installing the game I go in the launcher and hit play, it gives me an error message saying something about not supporting 64-bits. Is there a way to fix of patch this? Thanks.

    My specs are

    Phenom II X4 965 O/Ced' to 3.8ghz
    CoolerMaster V8
    Asus M4A79T-Deluxe
    8gb G.Skill PC3-12800 (1600)
    MSI R5850 1gb (hd 5850)

    Hello everyone,

i want to post you my solution to this issue. I have had the exact same issue as in first post. Started the game via the launcher. Bioshock 2 image popped up. A window frame occured and then "zap" instant crash.

Now the solution: At first i have to say that i use 2 screens. One was running on a refresh rate of 60Hz the other on 75Hz and both the same resolution of 1280x1024. Now i changed the primary screen to the exact same refresh rate of the secondary screen (75Hz) and it solved the problem.

The game starts up properly and doesnt crash at any time during playing. I hope this will help some of you.
