Thread: CRC error during install

    CRC error during install

    Alright, here's the deal.

CD looks fine and unscratched. Autoplay runs. Setup runs. It's all good and well until we get to installation. Then it stops at the file BioShock\Content\BulkContent\4-recreationLevel.blk

    Feature transfer error

    Feature: DefaultFeature
    Component: ContentDir
    File: D:\data2.cab
Error: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

Hitting OK then causes the InstallShield to completely exit.

OK, I thought that Securom's draconian protection system might be causing this, so Daemon Tools has not only been closed, but uninstalled. No Good. I've spent the last two hours trying to install Bioshock. Now I'm beginning to wonder if it's better for me to download from Steam and use the activation code on the back of my manual there, if that even works.

I really don't think that my DVD's defective, and I don't really have any other computer to install it on. Is there some way for me to manually install this, or at least get it on my hard drive somehow? Then I can deal with the internet activation and whatever troubles that may entail afterwards... for now, it won't even sit still and install.

I'm running Windows XP Home on a Intel Core 2 Duo E6400, so I don't know if that'll make a difference - there shouldn't be a file system compatibility problem, and I have 12 gigs free for the install.

    Thanks.

    2 scenarios:

    a) cd is busted

    b) dual core issues. I get this all the time with installing huge games or downloading large files. Once you load up the installer pull up task manager, find the process, right click it and set your affinity for that program to only one processor. As the installer changes windows keep checking to make sure it hasnt switched to a new .exe, if it does you have to set that affinity too. If that doesnt solve your problem, its scenario A.

Thanks! I never thought that I'd have to set core affinity for an install program, especially since the game highly recommends having two cores...
So far so good - it's gone past the file it kept giving me a CRC at. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Hmm... still getting a CRC error on data2.cab. This time on BioShock\Content\BulkContent\5-hephaestusLevel.blk. The DVD looks perfectly fine... I still refuse to believe that there's a problem with it. I wonder if anyone else is having this problem.

I had this problem when I first tried to install it. I ran the install in safe mode + networking and it installed and downloaded fine. Still can't play however

Hmm... thanks for the suggestion, but that didn't work either... it stopped at an even earlier point.

The DVD's not defective. I tested it on an old computer that I have (that can't run Bioshock), and it installed the whole thing without a glitch. I suppose something's wrong with my Memorex 52x then... probably wasn't the best idea to get a super-cheap drive that was on sale. Ironic, given that I ponied up the cash for a Core 2 Duo and Radeon 1950Pro, and can't run the game due to a sub-par DVD player.

Yes i just bought the game in a store, so installing from cd.

Just tried it in safemode+netw with no success... TBH i remember having this problem with wow too, but there i could copy the large data files to my harddisk. Doubt thatll work here... Sigh...

WTF do i do... Apparently a HW issue with either my harddisk or cd rom...

    Btw i have a DELL Dimension 9150.

While in safe mode can you create a new folder on the hard drive
Now double click My Computer and right click on the Drive with the game in.
From the menu choose open , you should now see the contents of the disk.
Now from the menu bar choose EDIT>Select All and then EDIT>Copy
Now open the folder you created and EDIT>Paste . when the files have been copied across run the file setup.
When installing you will need to leave the disk in for activation at the end.

    CRAP!

Booted safe mode+netw, made a c:\bioshockinstaller folder, explore cd, ctrl-a, ctrl-c, browse to c:\bioshockinstaller and ctrl-v. Even made sure there werent any hidden folders.

    Run setup.exe, same result:

At maybe 80%, a small popup box with the header: Feature transfer error

    ++++++++++++++++++
    Feature: DefaultFeature
    Component:
    File:
    Error: Alvorlig feil
    +++++++++++++++++++

(Alvorlig feil = Serious error in Norwegian)
(Btw i have Windows XP Home edition)

    A couple of random ideas...

There are 2 setup files on the DVD, on called _Setup and one called just Setup (no preceeding "_"), make sure that you are running the one without the "_" (underscore symbol).

You could try this again in safe mode, or might be worth trying it from a normal starup of windows.

    Cool

    Hey exog,

I have the same issue and yet to resolve. However, I found that the crc comes after the file has been copied to the distination directory. Ignore all crcs and you will load. Takes a while though....... Approx 2 hours.

I start the install then cruise this site looking for some posible explanation why the bioshock.exe does NOTHING!

What do you mean? Just let the installer continue after the crc popup and not click ok?

Ignore through them. Look at the installation directory as you are installing. You will see a "temp" download file counting up (F5 repeatedly). Once the file reaches full it becomes the permanent file. It does some kind of check back to the install media, creating the error, but the file is there.

    Hope this helps.

    Installed and playing

I kept getting the CRC error at various points during the install while extracting files from data2.cab. Also, when trying to move the contents of the dvd to the hard disk to install from there, I kept getting CRC errors while transferring data2.cab.

This is just another variation of moving the contents of the dvd to the hard disk and installing from there.

I created and mounted a DVD image using DAEMON Tools. Installing from the mounted image worked fine for me. Took a couple attempts before I could get a good image file though. UltraISO didn't work (and took hours), and my first image with DAEMON err'd out with a bad block message while creating the image.

CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2600 Barton Mobile
Memory: 2x 512MB (can't remember manufacturer or model)
    DVD drive: LITE-ON LDW-4015 DVD+RW

    Hi Guys.

Ok thats how I did it. Sorry for my not so perfect English. I am from Switzerland;-) Before I write my solution I have to tell, that it is boring to make the doctor before a game runs...Normally I would go to my dealer, and get the Money back. But because the game has a fantastic Echo from everywhere, I finally reached it to install it properly. Perhaps this does not help do everybody because there are many different systems.

    My System:
Its a workstation with 2 Intel XEON 3,6GHZ/1MB Cache. 2 GB RAM a Rendercard in it and an NVIDIA QUADRA FX 3400. Every Driver actualised.

    That was my Problem:
CRC problems with EVERY level.blk as written so often before.

    My Solution:

In Normal Mode I copied with the Windows-Explorer the whole DVD in a New folder, called "shock", on my Desktop.
I did NOT copy the _setup.exe file from the dvd to the shock-folder!
Of course I could NOT open the data1.Cab and the data2.Cab file with winzip;-)

I let the DVD in the drive and started the new Installation of the Game from my "shock"called folder by pressing the setup.exe sign.

Then it first deeinstalled the old version. Gamsavings included.

After the deinstallation nothing happend. OK pressed the setup.exe button in my shockfolder again. Then the installation started, BUT crashed immediately.

Ok rebooted the pc again. And gave this operation a last chance. And what wonder, it started to install it properly. And how fast.
Only the arcadia.blk level I had to press the REPEAT button 5 Times as the well known crc message appeared....But after that everything worked well. Patch update and now the thing works.

Time needed for reading the Forum and about other things in the Internet:30 Minutes. Copying the files from DVD to my new folder: 10 Minutes
Installtime for the new Gameinstallation: 8 Minutes.

    Now it works.

yah, but if his disk is defective it will also give this error.

It may be the same file that you guys had the problem with as well, but the data2.cab file it 5.95 out of the 6.03 GB on the disk. So if an error is going to occur on the disk its going to happen in that file.

if these solutions arent helping him like they helped others then chances are the OP should get a replacement disk. Defective disks do pop up now and then

run this program (download.com doesnt host programs with malicious content)to check the disk for errors:

In this full thread it seems unclear if this problem got solved in the end. If it didn't then can you please let me know so we can look into this. Thanks.

Ok I have another thread describing my problem, but as I see, its similar to most of yours and exactly to the Norwegian guy one. the error is

    Feature: Default Feature
    Component:
    File:
    Error: Catastrophic Failure
And happens only when installing game in Spanish. In english language it does work. And on safe mode, i can install it (but it does uninstall since need internet to patch) on spanish without any problem. But on safe mode with networking, it does give me the same error again. Its always on the same map (medical 1 esp) and about at 80% of the instalation. The solutions I have tryed, given from 2k moderators mainly:
Rename the install shield folder, to install shield old. Delete the windows temporary files and also the internet explorer temporary files. I have also erased almost everything I could, like cd burners, virtual dvd managers, antivirus and process explorers like. My problem does persist.
I discard a dvd defecture since it does install correctly in Spanish only on safe mode, but not in another kind of windows startup (including safe mode networking).
Last solutions I have seen, and which I am pending to test, are those given by you in this topic. Copying the entire dvd disk, running the setup exe and not the one with the _ , and making an image and installing from there.
If anybody got a clue, including of course 2k moderators (which I already contacted and I think they are on the job to help me out) please tell me. I will finish by being and expert on Bioshock issues, so when I do finally solve mine, I could work as a 2k tech support moderator, for free
Any kind of information, trial or anything is ultra welcome, since I do almost dont know what else to do. Game got a wonderful ambientation, my english is good enough, but being spanish and having the spanish version, I would like to be able to install it on my language. Also, as many of you could have already happened, I am about to finish my "credits" (installation retries) so if I find no solution, in a few days I will have a no playable game and an uninstallable dvd, which would make me feel...as you can imagine
Good luck to all, I think at least me will need it!

    A solution

    Hi there,

I know that this thread dates to a long way back, but I've read it while googling for a solution to this specific problem.

I had this kind of errors while installing BioShock (but the errors could be ignored and the installation process could be completed) and even more bothering, I also had this CRC error problem while trying to patch the game (which altogether prevented me from installing the patch because the errors couldn't be ignored).

The reason was that I had associated the .cab files with 7zip (but I read that it could happen with other utilities).

The solution is to remove the association in windows for these files : in an explorer window go to Tools>Options>File Types Tab and remove the line concerning .cab files (I hope that I got the menu names right as my OS is not in english...).

To all people who are a bit late like me and play this beautiful game only now, let's rock !
