    Official First Impressions Thread

Seeing as BioShock 2 is just a few hours away from being in our hands i thought it would be a good idea to make a thread where people can state what their first impressions of the game are! How do you think the combat it? What do you think about the graphics? What do you think about muliplayer?

All of those thoughts will be put in here

*Please no spoilers in this thread however! If you want to mention the story just say "It looks like it will be great!"*

Here is a toast to BioShock 2

Personally, I believe this should be moved to the "In-Game" discussion thread as to avoid any potential spoilers that may come up discussion "first impressions".

I have yet to taint myself with any real story of the sequel, not to mention gameplay videos and impressions.

Bit slow to start off, but then a magic moment happens before the end of the first level... just about to start Ryan Amusements and really starting to get into it... the game is already asking me questions

Ehhh... My first impressions are that the launch has been botched.

I find it startling how surprised so many people are that we are getting the game early... in America it is obviously very different. The sites you order from only SEND on release day, here they send before to ARRIVE on release day. Obviously sometimes that means they send it before in case of postage delay and it arrives early. This launch is not botched at all. This happens all the time (I always get my games at least a day early) and in fact 2K have been better at keeping the sales back than most companies.

I received it today, played both single player and multiplayer and it's great but my first thought was that I liked the original Bioshock better. I think I need to give it time and I'm not jumping to any conclusions yet because a lot of stuff can happen in a short period of time but I think it's the really run down look like I'm not too keen on. It goes with the story but aesthetically the graphics are very dull looking -- by that I mean the colours are very saturated and it's not 'alive'. I know that's the point but I don't know...I am very visually orientated so that was the first thing I noticed. I mean, I like Fallout 3 but couldn't play it very much because of the lack of colours so I'm just really fussy when it comes to that stuff which is annoying, even to myself. I know this opinion will be likely to change in the following days though But this is my 'first impression'.

Multiplayer is absolutely AWESOME. 2K perfected that in my opinion. I love how you start off in an apartment and are able to customise your features by going to different areas eg. the wardrobe and gene bank. I love everything about multiplayer so I'll be playing that a lot

The graphics aren't a whole lot better than the first. They look quite the same to me but I thought being produced a few years after the first, they would have improved quite a bit. The little sisters looked a lot better but things such as plant life etc. was quite low res and not really detailed.

I seem to sound very negative and I don't get me wrong, I love the game but those were the things that popped into my head.

I like playing as a Big Daddy. It's different the rivet gun and other weapons are awesome. Using the drill is verrry fun I think that was a great idea.

Umm, I love the art book to pieces (I got the SE) and it's well worth the money.

As Bioshock is my favourite game, I have no doubt that this one will one will be just as good but I need to give it time. I've only played for a couple hours

The storyline so far is really intriguing and I can't wait to learn more!

I'm really liking the characters in the audio diaries too.

The hacking system is such much easier and better. I'm really happy that was changed because I sucked at using the old system aha.

Well I got the game a couple hours ago, I recently stopped after entering Ryan Amusements. The atmosphere definitely seems much more dark. They really made it obvious that Rapture is being taken back by the sea, and I luvs it. Combat flows smoothly and the story seems very promising. Hope everyone else is enjoying it as much as I am .

Great graphics. I've been playing for nearly 2 hours and still haven't beaten the first level. I'm taking my time and admiring the level design.

The graphics although subpar I can deal with seeing there made on an outdated engine. The colors at points are way too bright, mostly the corels and such. The single player is good, although it doesn't instill any sense of 'fear' that I felt playing the first game although the atmosphere is good. The multiplayer however is a big steaming pile. I know some people who are more die hard fans than myself will probably flame me, but I for one am glad I purchased the game for the single player aspect. The multiplayer could have been something great and I imagined it to be so, but alas maybe due to the outdated engine the games built on it falls short of anything but so. Don't get me wrong for the Bioshock fan in me its great, but for the realist in me used to playing very good next gen MP games the multiplayer aspect is a letdown.

I just played a bit, as far as I could get on Hard with no vita-chambers or quicksaves. I was trying to see how hard it was compared to the first one. It started out pretty easy, and I was starting to get worried, but the game starts throwing mobs at you before very long.

I made it pretty far into Atlantic Express, where I was trying to make my way onto a train platform there, but I got too slow on the medkits and went down when a mob attacked me.

    What I like -

The state of decay, the more "lived-in" look that the place has... the world is a lot more detailed.

Headshots seem to be more effective, and turn heads into a bloody looking mess.

    What I don't like -

Feels a bit too scripted so far.

Delta only has one movement speed, unless he crouches.

What strikes me as odd -

Underwater bits remind me a lot of Mania from the Shivering Isles expansion for Oblivion. I almost started walking up to the crap growing on the sea floor to pick ingredients!

So far I'm liking it, the opening scene was WOW! I'm playing on the PS3 and the graphics look much better than the first game (to be expected since it was developed along with the other versions) I'm just at Ryan Amusements. I've been taking my time, looking in every nook and cranny for audio logs and admiring the scenery. Good job so far 2K!

Played for about 3 1/2 hours last night and I'm loving the single player game.

I was intrigued by the opening sequence (as I've been trying not to find out any plot details before playing) and really it really made me want to jump in with both feet and start looking around to see how tohe old place's holding up.

Not so well as it turns out. From the first look around it's clear that Ryan's great chain seems to have finally rusted all the way through and snapped clean in two.

While I thought being a Big Daddy might make you overpowered and therefor combat would be too easy (especially since you can use plasmids too) I'd overlooked a few things.

Firstly, while the years have gone by all of the first few splicers have now not only pumped themselves up with more plasmids and tonics than you can shake a stick at, they've also learned how to fight. Presumably in order to get the Adam they've needed over the years they've done nothing but battle, Big Daddies and one another. This survival of the fittest means that all those remaining are more adept at combat, taking cover, attacking from raised positions and employing better group tactics.

This leads me onto the second point, they're now working together instead of killing one another in petty disputes. This coupled with their developed combat skills can be very formidable. While staving off an attack from a group of thugs some leadheads can be shooting at you through windows or from behind boxes or from above. They'll keep herding you towards other splicers in order to wear you down and get the kill.

I'm not going to dig into the story as I'm sure you'll want to find it out at your own pace (and I'm not really that far in yet), but suffice to say it made those 3 1/2 hours I've already logged melt away as I was just so engrossed and looking to find out more of what has become of Rapture, both through the scripted events and the still ever interesting audio logs (the voice acting is still top notch).

The graphics seem a lot clearer and more polished than the first yet still with the same character (for want of a better word), so it still feels like you're in Rapture and not some new city with the same amenities. I thought the style of the first game was very appropriate and I'm pleased to see that it hasn't gone astray, just had a good scrub up.

All in all I'm more than impressed at first glance, it's a hard act to follow but this seems to have all the ingredients for a fun, fresh look at Rapture and all who live there. I can't wait to dive back in and carry on.

A good 15hours later and I finished, while it's not as good as the first I loved every minute of it, one really cool part towards the end that I loved (won't mention what it was for spoiler purposes) an interesting little snippet of conversion in Dinysos park that made me go when I found out who was talking.

A very interesting Audio Diary towards the end of the game sort of hinted to one of the theories floating around that I've have hated since it was first mentioned. there were allot of other interesting audio diaries laying around.

I love the new plasmid upgrade system, all though I didn't end up experimenting as much as I wanted to, they make for dome interesting combinations on my next play through. The weapon were good also I loved the seat gun, but then who doesn't love sticking splicers to walls?

I was surprised by the ending I got, I'd was nice with a major surprise mixed in with it, will have shoot for the other endings in my next couple of play throughs, all in all I enjoyed my return to Rapture, 10/10 for you 2K.

i just got the game this morning and have been playing the single player for about an hour. Im extremely impressed to say the least, rapture still feels as fresh as ever and the graphics are excellent (im playing on the 360 if that makes any difference). The underwater sequences seem to pace the game rather nicely but at the moment it all seems a little bit linear, i've just got into workshop 68 and things are seeming to span out a bit in terms of level variety so thats cool.
im enjoying the game thus far and haven't even tested out multiplayer, i have to say the guys at 2K have done a fine job indeed and im happy to be back in the most exciting place in a game ever!

really enjoying the game so far.. the combat has def improved, very intense battles with my machine gun flying everywhere. got to pauper's drop then stopped.

the multiplayer i am very impressed with , 2bh i love it!, it has a more relaxed feel rather to modern warfare etc..prob why i enjoy it even more..

but so far as a whole......very happy

Loving it. Playing a Medium drill only run (For the authentic Big Daddy feel) and so far it's a great challenge. Big sisters and Big daddies are really forces to be reckoned with (Even when you use everything)

The opening cinematic was pretty powerful...

So far, not a lot different from Bioshock, but I'm digging the dual-wield thing, and the story thus far is pretty engaging.

In my first MP match (Survival), I managed to make 9th place (out of 10) with no kills, but strangely 5 assists? and made it up a level... So, apparently I'm doing something right? Who knows.

I love the drill! I was skeptical at first, but it is soooo satisfying! I havn't played MP yet, but I'm absolutely loving the story! Great work 2K! Oh, and the graphics ARE better IMO.

My one and only very small complaint is...I miss the clown chanting "Welcome to the Circus of Values" I always thought that was eery, and a great addition to the ambience.

    Unhappy Somewhere under the sea...

I've been looking forward to this game ever since it was announced and I can say in all honesty it's the only game so far where I've ordered the Special Edition and not just bought the ordinary version. I love the city of Rapture and I just couldn't wait to get back down there again.

But now I'm here, I can't help but feel disappointed. I haven't been playing long since I haven't had time (I'm just in the Atlantic Railroad area) but it feels as though the designers have taken the original game and just built new areas and new ideas around it. I mean, in BioShock Jack gets into Rapture, wanders around, meets a Big Daddy and then is trapped, lectured by Andrew Ryan and then attacked by splicers; in BioShock 2 Delta wakes up outside a Vita-Chamber, wanders around, meets a Big Sister and then is trapped, lectured by Sofia Lamb and then attacked by splicers...

And it's not just the plot, it's the assets. Granted, the graphics are beautiful, but they're the much the same objects that were used in the original. Which is fine, since we're back in the same city. But in the scene where Lamb lectures you to which I just referred, if you look through the glass there's a board on the wall with accident statistics. It's exactly the same board that you see on the way into Neptune's Bounty in the original BioShock. Now I grant that's a measure of real geekery but to me it's frustrating: are you seriously trying to tell me that both places had the same board with the same stats written in the same handwriting? The same board, maybe, but the same stats? Unlikely.

Of course, I'm going to keep on playing through the game. It's going to be nice to meet up with some old friends and make some new ones. (Though why does Tenenbaum look different now? Her face seems thinner than it used to be. And why is Andrew Ryan dressed differently in the audio log image?) I've already sung along to the Gatherer's Garden tune (sad, I know). I want to walk around under the Atlantic and feel the ocean on my shoulders. But something's missing... the "Soul of Rapture", I think: the genius loci that made the city come alive in the first story, that made it put her arms around me, set her head on my shoulder and weep for what she had become. And that's the greatest desolation of all.

So... I'll go and give the Great Chain another tug. See if I can't shake some of the rust from its links after all.

Well. i have played the first 2 levels, and it is really a great game! I am a little disepointed in the graphic though! Sure the graphic is as good as BS1, but BS1 came out 2007. I was hoping for a little aprovement. The combat system (specially the drill!), and the atmosphere is great though!

And the music. It is a lot better than the first game. Especially the Jazzmusic during loadingtime between the levels are wonderful!!!. Thank you 2k for that! I havn´t tried the multiplayer yet, but i think it will rock!! /Johan

I noticed those but I think it's just a nod to the people who've played the first game. I don't think it's laziness, rather a way to make it seem familiar before pulling the rug out from under you.

I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt, certainly. Though... I don't know. It just all seems too familiar. The same stuff at the same point in the game.

I'll keep an open mind. This is Rapture, after all. :-)

First impressions: awesome. Don't mind the familiarity of it, its great to be back!
Like the new hack tool and mini-game, very useful for a speedy hack.

Also, is it just me or are Lamb's radio messages always jumpy at parts?

    OMG its amazing!
    the starting cinematic!
the graphics (some draw distance pop in but its ok)
how nicely the city has aged
it truly feels that its been decaying for 10 years!
cant wait to play the second level tomorrow

    Just finished it.

Gameplay was awesome. Nothing feels cooler than being a Big Daddy.

But I'm not sure how I felt about the story...

I also think the levels/scenery wasn't as interesting as the first.

I haven't come to a final conclusion yet, but my overall feeling is positive.

That particular board is also somewhere in Hephaestus. It saddens me to see it around a third time.

This is based on the PS3 version btw

It's soo great to be back in Rapture.

    1st - initial install took 9 mins 42 seconds

load time per level is about 45-60 seconds each level so far.

Graphics - on par with the original although they seem to be slightly better. Still they seem very "soft" for the most part.

Multiplayer is fun but I did already experience some lag issues. Not too bad though, I remember when the Darkness first came out it was basically unplayable due to lag.

And yes the song names are in the Grace Notes database so when you import the soundtrack CD the proper names are there.

It is amazing! I love this game!
But I think I will be crying for some of it. Because Delta is such a interesting person and so sad.
I was shocked at the intro.
I cried at the start because it is so sad and shocking what happens.
The entire start till the full on fighting made me cry.
And I rarely cry at anything.
I suddenly felt slightly guilty over killing BDs in Bioshock lol.
I love drilling enemies with the drill.
    Awesome weapons!
The LS are better and more demonic.
Multiplayer is awesome. Unique. Bit slow but I hope the servers are full constantly. No one wants a repeat of Fear 2, Transformers etc. Awesome games but not enough playing.
    Absolutely awesome!
