Failure To Launch
Just installed the game, said it was happy. Put in the serial number, didn't get an error message there or anything. But once the neat little window that said "Bioshock" appeared on my desktop; "WINDOWS HAS ENCOUNTERED AN ERROR: and closed this application". Not discouraged i merely clicked the shortcut and a few bizwerts and rreeeewow, Bioshock window, "Windows has Encountered an Error", bashing head on my table (ow). This continued to go on for awhile till i came here.
System Stats:
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 3 CPU 1.80GHz
Free Space: Enough
Radeon X1300
Could be my drivers cause I haven't updated them since... the before time.
Any and all advice would be helpful (all unnecessary advice can be sent to the recycle bin)

please refer to the thread titled "bioshock.exe has encountered" blahblah. Sounds like we're having the same problem... be good to keep a single thread to gather all the info.

Hi, I purchased the game through Steam. I launch the game and a few secs after the BioShock logo appears on my screen I get the dreaded “Bioshock.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. Sorry for the inconvenience.” message. I’ve tried updating drivers. I’ve Run “Selected Startup” with Msconfig. What else I can do I don’t know.
Ok so my specs are:
XP pro 32-bit version 2002 SP2
Intel Duo Core 2 6700 @ 2.66Ghz
2 GB RAM
DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
NVidia GeForce 7950 GX2 – SLI 2x512 – Dual screens 1920 x 1080 and 1280 x 1040
Tried both Drivers 168.18 and Beta 163.44 @ Nvidia.com
X-Fi Sound Blaster Platinum – Latest Drivers 2-09-0007 @ Creative.com
I’m using a Plantronics GameCom Pro1 USB headset, which comes with its own sound card.
By all means this should work.
Anything you can do to help would be greatly appreciated.

For those who purchased through STEAM...A posible solution
Ok guys. Here is what worked for me. Don't know how much this has to do with the FIX, but I was missing the default.ini file. I saw it was mentioned on other posts as the file to fix, but I could not find it. The minute I followed the following steps, the .ini file magically appeared. HMMMMMM! I wonder...... I got this from the Support team:
Hello
Please try the following fix
1. Write down your Steam Account name and password - you will need them to log back into Steam once you have reinstalled
2. Logout of Steam if you are able to do so
3. Exit Steam
4. Move SteamApps out of the Steam folder. This is the folder that holds your games so you want to keep it!
5. If you are having problems with a specific game, delete it's folder from SteamApps/<account> - Uninstall via Add/Remove programs, if you can
6. Restart if prompted
7. Delete Steam folder if it still exists
8. Hit windows key + r ( run at the start menu ) and type regedit
9. Delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Valve
10. Restart
11. Download and install a fresh copy of the Steam installer from http://www.steampowered.com/download/SteamInstall.msi
12. Run the installer
13. Exit Steam before you first login
14. Move your SteamApps folder back
15. Run Steam. "
