Faulting application bioshock.exe, faulting module msvcr80.dll

    Hello,
I purchased Bioshock using my Steam Account. I have had numerous crashes all related to the following log entry in the Event Viewer - Application:

"Faulting application bioshock.exe, version 1.0.0.0, faulting module msvcr80.dll, version 8.0.50727.762, fault address 0x00017440"

My system config is as follows:

I followed the directions (http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/sho...ht=msvcr80.dll) for copying the msvcr80.dll to the appropriate directories. That thread enabled the game to allow me to get into the "Entering Rapture" (right after the plane crash module).

However, now that I'm entering the Medical Pavilion, I'm getting the same error again.

    Any advice would be great!

Same error. Trying to run BioShock off of Steam. If you search the forum, some people had the same problem with the demo. Funny thing is... The demo runs fine, the actual game crashes with the error cited above.

Should have bought the 360 version. What a waste of time.

Tried everything on that page. Still the same error. Funny that the demo works fine...

I'm also getting the same error when trying to launch Bioshock:
Faulting application bioshock.exe, version 1.0.0.0, faulting module msvcr80.dll, version 8.0.50727.762, fault address 0x0001507a.

I've tried copying the dll linked below, as well as the dll in C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\x86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1fc8b3b9a 1e18e3b_8.0.50727.762_x-ww_6b128700 to various folders on the system, but they have no effect. I've also tried rolling back the Visual Studio redist pack, no help there.

I've also done a full Steam verification, as well as delete the entire Bioshock directory and let Steam download it again. I'm still getting the error.

Does anyone have anything left I can try?

    Things I've tried:

    1. Screwing with the DLL, putting it into system32, and the BioShock release folder.

    2. Latest DirectX Runtimes (August 2007) http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...dxwebsetup.exe

    3. Verifying Steam cache, redownloading game from Steam.

    4. Tried loading both different versions of the Visual C++ 2005 Redistributables:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

    and SP1:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

    5. Loaded the latest nVidia BioShock specific drivers (163.44). http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_163.44.html or in my case since I'm running a laptop (GeForce Go 7950 GTX) http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/...howtopic=14561

    6. Adding -dx9 to the bioshock.exe shortcut.

None if this worked. Other notes... The Demo works PERFECTLY. This is on an XP machine, not Vista.

I've tried everything JKVM has tried, except replace "NVIDIA drivers" with "ATI hotfix".

I've also tried manually scrubbing all old versions of the mfc80 class of dlls from SidebySide in the event it's pulling an older version by accident, but it had no effect. It did break catalyst until I reinstalled the Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable though, which was fun.

    Crazy tidbit of info:

My machine is a Dell XPS M1710 with a GeForce Go 7950 GTX running XP SP2. I still can't get past the error above. I was getting BSODs, so I reverted to the Dell nVidia drivers.

I installed Steam and BioShock on my wife's Dell XPS M1710 with a GeForce Go 7900 GTX running the Dell nVidia drivers and a nearly clean install of XP SP2 (installed today). I had to overcome a Securom issue on her machine, but it works perfectly. WTF?

Is that from the full game or from the demo? I get:
Faulting application bioshock.exe, version 1.0.0.0, faulting module bioshock.exe, version 1.0.0.0, fault address 0x003ed2b1.
when I try to run the demo, and the msvcr80.dll error when I try to run the full version.

Same here. I've tried all of that before, but the problem persists. Every fix that's been suggested doesn't work.

I might have to try that. I'm on a Sager NP5790, Go 7950 GTX, 32-bit Vista, 163.44 drivers. Maybe if I revert back to the stock Sager drivers, it will work? Worth a shot...

    Some luck...

    To All,
I have found that if I disable the High Detail Shaders (HDS) in Graphics Options my game doesn't crash...

I can't get the game to launch at all, so any "disable X in the X options" are pretty useless to me. I spent another 2 hours going through forums and fighting with this today, still no luck, and still running fine on my wife's nearly identical laptop.

I suspect this may be one of those things that will require a complete Windows reinstall, sadly.

Fix from the Steam forums took care of it for me. Take a look: http://forums.steampowered.com/forum...d.php?t=589942

Seems like Steam isn't properly decrypting the BioShock files, and this fixed it for me!

I also get the same error. This crash happens after about 5-10 minutes of playing. I have tweaked and reinstalled and added -dx9 and done everything in these forums. Why am I the customer having to track down a fix to a game that I paid $50 for? Why do I have to search online for a fix to this game instead of enjoying a game that doesn't crash? Some manager needs to get fired for this BS. Company of heroes, medieval 2 total war, jade empire, supreme commander, and galactic civilizations are all games that I have played recently that I did not have to go pouring through the support forums to play for more than 10 minutes. The last game that gave me this much trouble was battlefield 2142. I get serious lag when playing online but at least it doesn't crash to the desktop after 10 minutes. This sucks. It really really sucks.

I can understand your fustrated with the game not working, but relax and provide your technicial details about your machine.

When it crashes, exactly what do you see on screen?

  21. #21
For me (and I know you weren't addressing that to me specifically, but in case it helps), this crash happens (again, demo) directly after it should get done *loading* level 2 of the demo. IE the "Welcome to Rapture" loading screen comes up and flips through the screenies 3 or 4 times (ususally ends up on the one with the "1959" in lights)...says things like saving is disabled in the demo and something else (can't remember). Sound is also there. When it crashes, if in full screen exits to a window, and if windowed stays there (completely black if exiting from full screen, and I believe still on loading screen if in a window), and the dialogue comes up for Bioshock.exe has encountered an error and needs to close. If you look at the details, that's where the msvcr80.dll issue comes in. Sound also tends to loop there a few seconds. Once you either submit the error to MS or close the error, the window closes and return of your machine is returned. Only residual issue seems to be, and this could be a clue, Windows no longer turns off your computer when shutting down or trying to reboot. It gets so far where it should automatically turn off/reboot and just hangs, and you have to press the reset switch.

Anybody from 2K - any progress at all on this issue? Why this particular module? (Redownloaded the demo and I'm going to attempt a brand new install tonight).

    Turning off HDR

The only way I've gotten the game to work is by turning off the two HDR choices in the graphics menu. It sucks that I have to play the game with worse graphics than it should have, but at least I can play it. I've tried all the remedies listed in this thread.

    Fixed

I brought my RAM up to 2 gigs and the game works fine now. XP BTW. Athlon X2 4300+ Nvidia 7950 GT. Retail Box of Bioshock.

    Robin.

  25. #25
I bought the retail version of BS (against my better judgment) and I am still getting hit with msvcr80.dll error as soon the bathysphere cutscene ends. I've tried EVERY SINGLE FREAKING FIX I could find, and nothing works.

    What's the deal here?

  26. #26
I have the same msvcr80.dll error that everyone else is getting. I have:

    deleted and reinstalled steam
deleted and reinstalled the whole game (yeah I had to download it twice)
updated Direct X as instructed to by 2k phone support
updated video drivers (had to wait for an emailed link from 2k for that)
updated Visual C++ Runtime package (had to wait for an emailed link from 2k for that too)

The game used to crash before it loaded the first level. After all this, the game finally does run... but only if I disable all the graphics options =( If I hack a security camera, it crashes. Sometimes the game will crash when I load, even with all the graphics options disabled. It sucks to have to play it with everything turned all the way down, and all these crashes I still encounter suck too. I hope 2k people are paying attention and reading all these posts here.

There should be some alarm bells going off at 2k right now. This is happening to too many people. Something is wrong here and it needs to be fixed. I hope the first patch for the game will address our issue here.

I found this after having 2nd loading screen. Picture flicked and a window came up with this error report.
