Thread: "bioshock.exe has stopped working"

    "bioshock.exe has stopped working"

    Now I'm mad.

Let's get this outta the way:
    Vista 32bit
    AMD X2 4800+
    2gb RAM
    Radeon 1650pro

So - I've updated my video drivers (not betas). Disabled anitvirus. Uninstalled and reinstalled Bioshock. Updated DirectX. All of the above have had no effect regarding a basic issue that's happened since I installed it this morning. Retail box copy.

    It won't run. Period.

I get the small BioShock splash icon dead center on the screen, then the "bioshock.exe has stopped working" error. No info otherwise. Nothing changes, nothing helps.

Other users with this problem, please chime in. And 2K - fix your broken game.

    Same Here

    Hey,

We have teh same problem. It took me weeks to get my girlfriend to agree to buy this game (she laughed at the though of buying any game for $50. I asked why she bought a PS3) and now it won't even work.

Same exact error as you, and we've done all the same stuff as you. My computer is new, bought it two weeks ago and should have more than enough to play anything out there.

    You're not alone.

    Had this issue.

There was a post earlier that suggested turn off User Account Control. I tried this in conjucntion with firewall permissions and it started right up.

    Its under:

Control Panel, User Accounts and Family Safety, User Accounts

Idk whats up. Im getting mad!

Ya im having the same problem and I have all the system requirements for max play but yet the game closes every 5 minutes.

I have the same message too and I'm not sure what to do about it. I have 64 bit vista, a nvidia 8800 GTX, 2 gigs memory, and an intel E6700 processor.

I have already disabled the user account control and I don't have a firewall. I ordered the game through steam so I'm not sure if they are the problem or not.

I have no idea what to do and it is very frustrating. If anyone has any advise as to how to proceed it would be appreciated

Exact same problem. Just finally finished getting it off Steam, and I get the same error. When I first tried to open it it said something about SecuROM (which apparently is another common problem), but now it just crashes.

    *sigh*

I'm having the same problem. I've tried everything I can think of. I've uninstalled my video drivers and then installed the newest release from ATI, supposedly a driver meant for bioshock. I've disabled account control and firewall. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game. I've disabled my virus software. Nothing seems to make any difference. The game appears to start up. Get to see all the nifty logos, then right when the game menu "should" show up, I get the bioshock.exe has quite working. Thinking it's video related as that seems to be what is causing the hangup, although that is just a guess. I'm running an ATI X1950. Would think it would be up to the job.

Same song, second verse. Appreciate the help, but the firewall and user account settings failed to have any impact.

I'd sure love to see what the title screen looks like at some point. I've only owned it for nine hours now.

Forgot to mention, I'm on a Sager NP5790 notebook, with Go 7950 GTX (w/ beta 163.44 drivers), latest DirectX from Microsoft and Vista Business 32-bit. Is this a Vista problem? A Steam + Vista problem? Or is this happening to everyone? It's all over the Steam boards too - this is a really, really big issue, apparently.

I'm not on Vista but I did get it on steam... just updated to beta nvidia drivers so I'll try it out and see what happens. So far it crashes anywhere from the first loading screen to the beginning of the part after the second loading screen.

I was able to get past the splash screen (finally) by specifing the "-dx9" switch. I purchsed on Steam (right click on BioShock and you can set the launch options).

I am still pretty peeved that 6 months after I shelled out so much $$$ for a 8800GTX, Vista Home Premium, I get a DX10 game that I can only run in DX9 mode!

    My system:

    Foxcon C51XEM2AA MB
    AMD 5600+ (@ 3.15gHz)
    4GB DDR800 (@ DDR900)
    XFX 8800GTX (stock speeds)
    Creative Labs X-FI Fatality1
Vista Home Preimum (all patches current plus several hotfixes)

I'm on the same machine, but with Vista 64-bit and 3 gigs of RAM. I bought the hard copy of the game, but had the same problem with the demo I got off of fileplanet. On SA, people with XP and Vista seem to be having the same issues, so I'm hoping this is patch-able by 2K. I can't get the beta drivers to work, and they don't appear to support the "Go" line of video cards, so I'm surprised they work for you. I got a slightly updated driver off of the Clevo website, to no no effect, sadly.

Seriously, these machines should be able to play the game with little trouble.

    Hopefully this'll get patched soon

yeah tried the beta drivers, no dice. Also from checking some of the other threads, anyone else get a weird visual c++ thing during install or on the first crash? something about msvcrt80.dll or a similar file.

    My specs:

    - Dell XPS M1710
    - Windows XP (MC Ed.)
    - Intel Centrino Duo 2.16Ghz
    - 1G RAM
    - Nvidia 7900 go

This thing won't even run in the windowed mode while on the lowest graphics settings. Where's the patch! This is so not ready for release.

    Are you kidding me!

I you fricken kidding me Irrational/2K! All this crashing BS makes me think I could have done a better job testing this ☺☺☺☺. I pre-loaded off steam, puchased tonight, and get the damn bioshock.exe cannot load error. Don't they realize that there are thousands of PC users that wanted (in my case DID) buy this game to PLAY IT! This has to be one of the biggest launch catastophes of all time, considering the hype and acclaim that Bioshock has recieved for this product. What a huge mistake by the PC crew at Irrational. Ken Levine is absolutly ☺☺☺☺☺ing his PC team out right now im sure because there are going to be hundreds of people who don't puchase the game on PC because of this. Get us our fricken patch now Irrational, how could you possibly be so careless! Unbelievable.

    Specs:
    2.4 Quad Core Intel
    8800GTS
    EVGA 680I mobo
    4GB XMS memory
    1K psu

Yeah, I got the same thing, but that also happened when I installed the demo, so I think that's normal. Who knows...

you would think with errors being this common they would find the solution before mass selling the game.

Same problem here ("Bioshock.exe has stopped working" after the initial little logo box window).

Vista Ultimate x64, 8800 GTS with the recommended drivers from NVidia. Got the collector's edition, not the Steam version.

I've tried with and without the -dx9 option. Also tried disabling UAC and the firewall, and just for good measure killed Steam and Xfire. No dice.

    Possible Fix

Try downloading the Direct X end user runtime, dated August 2007. Installing this fixed the same problem on my Vista 64 machine, I'm now up and running in directx 10 mode instead of crashing on load up.

I assume the message "bioshock has stopped working on vista" is the same one I'm getting on XP formulated a bit differently (the usual "windows has to close the program" type of pop-up).

Anyhow, I see no one is willing to help us, so ☺☺☺☺ it, I'm not buying this turd until they fix it. What a buggy piece of crap.

My roommate was getting the bioshock.exe has stopped working error as well.

    E6600, 8800GTS, 2Gig ram, Vista 32bit

We tried updating to the beta nvidia drivers, disabling sound card, etc etc. Installing the latest directX did the trick.

He's now playing and enjoying it.

I have the exact same issue. I preloaded from Steam, currently it says "Updating 0%" but I'm able to launch the game. I get the splash screen, then a black screen which will sit forever. If I use task manager i see a message that someone else posted "Bioshock.exe has stopped working". This message comes up instantly when I try to run the game. I thought i may be having issue due to using Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit but I see I'm not alone with this issue.

    System Specs:

Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit (all updated with compatibility updates)
    E6850 Core Duo 2 3.0 GHz
4 gigs of Cruial DDR2 800 Mhz RAM.
Asus GeForce 8800 GTX stock speeds
    Audigy 2 Platinum.

I tried some of the suggestions of this thread and others and it freezes up at a black screen every time. It seems like the second it tries to go into 3d mode and render the game it crashes. I got the same types of events in my event viewer as everyone else. I hope a patch is released quickly to resolve this since I was very eager to try this game out. I'm going to book mark this thread in the hopes a solution will be found.

Didn't fix it for me. I reinstalled DirectX twice (from the demo folder and from another website).

Yes, this is the correct update.

    Thumbs down Strength in numbers

Same here guys. I am running 2 gigs, and a 8400M GT card from my Vaio. Still beats minimum requirements, but I can't even put the BETA driver on it...doesn't seem like its compatible.

Nonetheless, if there is any fuel in numbers, add me to the list. Get these patches quick...or I'll act like EB games will let me return an opened box of your bugged out game.
