    What's your preferred game packaging?

How do you like your games to be packaged? Jewel case? Plastic DVD case? Or are you happy with a cheap paper envelope?

Personally I see a lot of advantages in the traditional CD jewel case. It takes up the least amount of space while still providing good protection. You can use what space you have efficiently by stacking jewel cases on top of each other and the paper inserts allow you to quickly and easily locate the desired game by the name on the side of the case. It's big enough to contain one, two or three discs.

I surely can't be the only one running out of space to store games. Why do games now come in plastic DVD cases? I especially hate those double thickness cases that contain only one single disc. What a waste of space!

As for paper envelopes that's just cheap and nasty cost cutting from publishers. At the prices we pay for new games we deserve better than that. And you can't store your expensive and highly valued game collection in paper envelopes.

    What's your preference?

Sorry, but this is a rather inane topic, don't you think? Next we'll be talking about pies or pens. I'd rather not see this forum dissolve into another Gamernode.

    The Pie thread http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=353

I generally try and get DVD cases, as they used to be my favourite, and when it comes to my games I like everything to be uniform. They used to be my favourite becasue I bought a couple of adventure games recently that arrived in jewel cases in a cardboard sleeve with gatefold cover, and that's really changed my mind about the packaging. I really like that format, and I'd like it much more if the cardboard sleeve was a slipcase. I think that would be the perfect format.

I generally always get DVD cases over the big card retail boxes (I like the big card boxes the least), but personally my ideal format would be a jewel case in a card slipcase with gatefold cover, I basically think that's the ideal format, with ideally a more detailed manual included alongside the jewel case in the slipcase, maybe with an 'outline' strategy guide like the Operation Flashpoint GOTY slipcase had (something worth buying an original copy for).

I'd have to agree there. Who cares what piece of plastic or paper the CD comes in? I'll go with Jewel Case simply because I have a stand to the left of my computer desk, and it only fits jewel cases. With the prevalence of the CD no longer being required to be in the drive to play, 90% of games get the 'file & forget' treatment these days.

    *Slowly raises hand*

Well, actually... Having never really thought about it before, I think I do. Yes, yes I do. I don't like those paper sleeves one bit. Especially with multiple disks. I would like the Jewel Case, as I have a rack that holds them as well. Only have a few games on DVD currently, so not sure about that yet.

    Peace,
    Cor

As long as it comes on a DVD, I don't pretty much care how it comes wrapped in. Would be nice if it came in a box like Guild Wars, compact, heavy and attractive =)

Paper envelope just does not protect a disc well enough from damage - and since that is the purpose of it, that is a failing.

Jewel cases.... drop it once and the plastic shatters. Mot CDs I had come in jewel cases have long since been moved to other forms of storage because of it. Also, insides of the jewel case has always seemed lacking in space for the extras.

A DVD case is sturdy, not as prone to breakage, and it protects a disc well. It also has a far more pleasing golden section ratio of length to width, making a manual sized for it feel more substantial and pleasant to read - at least by my perception.

I don't care if the publisher only uses paper envelope if we don't need the disc to play the game once installed. But if we do I find them nothing but cheapskates, where usually paper envelopes = 10 page manual with mostly instructions on how to install, warranty info, and several blank pages for notes.

Note to developers: Have your own guys do some quality work on potential packaging and manual that you could sell to the pub. Don't rely on their ineptitude.
