    PC demo fullscreen loading problem.

The main menu loads fine but when I select a difficulty setting the game freezes on the loading screen (the loading screen can be seen VERY faintly just as it is starting to fade in). After some experimentation I found that running the demo in windowed mode makes it all work just fine but when I switch back to full screen it crashes.

    I am running:
    Intel Core Duo2 2.6Ghz
    Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX
    2GB RAM
    Vista Home premium 32-bit
    163.44 beta drivers

does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

I have the excact same problem, the game has no problem getting into the main menue in fullscreen but if I want to start the demo it crashes, in windowmode it doesn't. It just works in fullscreen if I switch back to fullscreen after the loadingscreen, but it crashes again when another loading-screen appears.

    My System:

    Intel Core2duo E6700
    Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB
    (163.44 Beta driver)
    2GB RAM
    Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit

Try running the game in DX 9 mode instead of DX10.

I've been reading these forums today and I read in one that running in DX 9 will fix the issue.

I can confrim that though, but it's worth a try.

Might have read my post, dx9 does work in full screen but performance is worse than windowed dx10 at same resolution and max settings for both.

I don't want to be stuck playing in windowed or dx9 though, hopefully a dev sees this topic.

    bump.

Problem still exists in full game. Don't want to keep playing in windowed mode...

Can you make sure that you include your pc specs if you are experiencing this problem, include what version of the drivers you have installed for the video card

    Thanks.

    hi, same exact problem here.

    Yeah, same thing here

    Asus commando mobo
    Intel Core2Duo E6600
    2gigs Corsair ram
    Geforce 8800gtx
    vista 32bit

I've noticed that running the game fullscreen at 1024x768 works fine, and once loading is complete I can switch resolutions without a hitch (to 1680x1050, my native, although i've tried some 4:3 res's)...until the next load screen.
DX9 seemed to work, but then it froze again at the second load screen, without even showing a dim version of it.

Haven't tried windowed mode, but I suspect that it's something to do with the res. the game's running at

i know this is completely obvious, but you can alt-enter to go into windowed mode for the load screens then alt-enter back into fullscreen mode after its loaded. it works for now.

I have the same problem. I can't just alt+enter out when it loads cause it still freezes. It looks like a darkened still version of the normal loading screen. I hate this bug the same thing happened with the demo. For now I'm just playing in a window at the same resolution as my desktop (1920x1200). Heres my specs:

    Windows Vista Business 64bit
    Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.40GHz
    4GB DDR2 667 RAM
    Geforce 8800GTS 320MB

I hope 2k games will release a patch or something to fix this issue.

    I have this problem
    so heres my specs:

    intel e6600 @ 3ghz
    Asus P5W DH Deluxe
    4gb ram (g.skill pc2 6400)
    Asus 8800gts 640mb
2x seagate sata II in striped raid
    Vista ultimate 64

I notice this problem is fairly common so I hope there will be a fix soon?

    Same problem.

    My specs:

    8800 GTX 768MB
    Core2Duo 2.2ghz (so 4ghz)
    2048MB RAM
    Vista 64bit
Updated DirectX10 this morning to make sure.
Running 163.44 Beta drivers, although had same problem on several other driver sets.

    Same issue.

    System specs:

    Gateway q6600
    2gb ram
    Nvidia Geforce 7800 GTS (320MB)
    Sigmatel onboard sound (I believe)
Previously had a Belkin USB network adapter with beta drivers, however it is no longer active. The drivers are still installed, however.

Other, 'non-standard' hardware (in case there's any common theme):
    Gateway generic TV tuner card
    Smart card reader
Wacom tablet (+ windows tablet stuff that seems to get loaded automagically)

anti-virus software: CA eTrust and McAfee (yeah, I should disable at least one...)

    Specific issue:
Whenever a load or save screen appears (specifically, the screens with the quotes at the bottom), the game will freeze, leaving a faint image of the screen that is to be shown, as if it was just brought up from 0% transparency.

    Detailed repro steps:
Start game in DX10, fullscreen mode.
Select 'start new game' from main menu.
    Observe system hang

Start game in DX10, fullscreen mode.
    Switch to windowed mode
    Load game
Observe that game continues to run
    Switch to fullscreen mode
    Save game
    Observe system hang

Note that hangs can be ended by alt-tabbing out of Bioshock, and right-clicking Bioshock's entry, then selecting 'Close'.

    Known workarounds:
    Run game in DX9 mode
    Run game in windowed mode.
    * Note: Game works fine in full-screen mode, so long as you switch to windowed mode before saving/loading. Kind of a pain, though.

    Attempted workarounds that failed:
Update to latest nvidia drivers, per readme file
Modify graphics settings to minimum possible
    Reduce sound to mono/no reverb
Modify desktop color depth setting to 16 bit
Install latest (August '07) DX runtime

    Things I'll try tomorrow:
    Downgrading to older nvidia drivers
    Getting rid of McAfee
Removing any other running applications (there's not many)

And... my first post was incorrect... I have an 8800 GTS, not a 7800 GTS.

It's a BFG card, if that matters.

It seems the consistency here is:

Intel core 2 duo (or quad in my case)
Nvidia 8800 card of some random flavor

  22. #22
    dual core e6300
    2 gig ddr2 ram
    geforce 8600 gts

    latest nvidia beta drivers

    same issue...
game plays fine in dx9 mode....but crashes during loading in dx10 mode
rumour has it that the latest release of dx9 might resolve the issue....will be testing tonight
i have seen it before with a game in vista...although 10 was up to date my dx9 was not...and a quick install of the latest release resolved the issue...whether it will in this case im not sure....

ill be trying the dx9 august redist tonight..but someone might be better placed to try it right now

Same exact problem here. Windowed mode works fine, but I think that fps go down in the comparison to the fullscreen mode.

bump, would like to get this fixed.

I can use Alt+Enter but sometimes it wont remember the resolution right so it can be a pain in the ass. Also performance is worse in full screen than in windowed, is it like this for everyone else?

Every other game ive played, windowed mode has had worse performance...

I can confirm that this issue is both with the retail DVD version as well as the demo.

No official word yet? Or is it in another topic and I missed it? :x

Just installed the full game and as confirmed by others, the dx update does nothing to rectify the problem. I downloaded and installed it last night. I just started the game and it locked up after selecting the play mode.

I'm just going to play it windowed until a fix is found. I'm using a Asus P5b, e6600, 8800GTX on Vista 32 Home Premium.

Nevermind, found a fix/workaround for this:

    Everything working perfectly now.

I have a wacom tablet installed as well. I would never have thought in a million years that this could be the problem. Is anyone else using a tablet ?

I'll have to try this fix later tonight as I'm out running a fishing match I'll post the results.

Been playing the game for a couple of hours now and I must say it's excellent. Shame about the problems we are all having.

Excellent, a tablet service somehow screws up game load screens? Well, whatever, it works now. I just need to reboot between using tablet and playing Bioshock.
