Do We Need a New Generation?

So now that this generation of gaming consoles has reached it's third year on the market people are starting to look for talk about a new generation of consoles. I'm curious to see what people around here think about this, are we ready for a new generation or are we happy with the 360, PS3, and Wii?

In my opinion, I think that there are many reasons that this generation of consoles should last longer than past generations. For example, the fact that this generation revolves around internet connectivity the consoles have been able to evolve and become more than they were upon release, I mean just look at how much the 360 has changed since this time 2006. Also the fact that so many more people have been introduced to gaming (thanks, mostly, to the Wii) the market needs a bit more stability to keep them feeling comfortable.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on the matter?

I'm perfectly fine with what we have. I mean really...The PS3 and 360 already have stunning graphics. We don't really need to improve on that very much. Plus we have a huge library of games which is always growing. We don't need to make all new consoles, just so you can get rid of your old games and your console just for something a bit different. Plus we have Project Natal and that PS3 wand thing coming out, which should last us another few years.

    I think we're good.

Xbox 2520°, Playstation 4 and the Nintendo Woo.

I really don't think there should be another gen system right now IMO. PS3's and 360's and Wii's are still selling pretty well with a bunch of new and good games on the way. Also the recession would keep the newer gen released consoles from doing as well as lets say 360 and PS3 sales. I mean who is willing right now to drop say 500+ dollars for a new gen console plus a host of other variables like extra remotes, games, etc. Also with the current gen systems as low as 300 dollars for any of the 3 and a huge library of games will keep the replay value for them for awhile.

Still though with the Natal for the 360 and Motion Wands for the PS3, I think new additions is where we are headed (At least for now).

    (2520° isn't a made up angle just FYI )

I think that we absolutely do not need a new generation right now.

In another thread someone was talking about UE4 and how thats being primed for 3D for the next generation. In my honest opinion i think thats the right way to go about it.Although HDTVs have been out a while, people are just starting to get them for their PS3s and Xboxes, but even so it will take a while for people to completely switch to HD.I understand Mitsubishi and Sony are going to be releasing 3DTVs soon, but for gaming to really make that leap to 3D and for consumers to make that leap as well,i think it will take a good 8-10 year.

I think we are fine with this current generation and as it stands there really isn't much to improve on,as bubbles stated.

    This.
At the current moment the industry seems to be focusing on Motion and to some extent touch.I think there is a lot of potential there,i'd really like to see where that goes before we tread 3d waters.

I wholeheartedly agree with all of these statements and I really hope that Sony, Microsoft, & Nintendo are listening to these sentiments. If the general public is happy with what they have than by all means let them keep it.

With the developments of Natal and the PS3 Wands it appears that Sony and Microsoft at least are gearing up for a longer run but Nintendo is the wild card in this, especially since I've heard rumors about development on a Wii HD. If Nintendo announces a new system I fear it'll start the next gen race prematurely.

I think that would be a bad move on Nintendo's part, particularly since they've attracted a lot of casual gamers who may not be happy with having to buy a new console every 3/4 years.

I agree, I'm really hoping that the Wii HD ends up being just a deluxe version of the same console with the capability to utilize HD rather than a whole new console.

I can't afford another 500$ console. So no. I'm perfectly happy with my XBox360.
