What are you more looking forward to?

well... I'm not sure how to make a poll... but I was wondering what people wanted more in from the game. BioShock is alluded to be a mix between RPG and FPS. Two very sucsesful genres. I was wondering what part people like better. I personally like the First person Shooter part, so I won't really care as much about the passive plasmids that up levels (although I will use them, but it might be sort of annoying).

The reason why I don't like the "leveling" type thing, because it makes it so youcan just max out your skills, and makes the game ultimatly dumb.

But, it might work well here

    FPS ALL THE WAY!

Personally, it all depends on what you consider to be an RPG. A computer role-playing game seems to mean having RPG elements such as statistics and inventory. While RPG games generally must have these elements, they alone do not make a game an RPG.

What does make a game an RPG is the ability to play the role of whomever you want. If you want to be a good person and help everyone you meet, you can do that. If you want to be a total bastard and kill anyone and everyone that gets in your way, you can do that too.

As has been stated, Bioshock is predominantly a first-person shooter, but it's more than just that. If it were purely a FPS, then the game would be static and ultimately become boring after the first play through. The RPG elements, including the freedom within the game, will make the game more playable and ultimately more satisfying to play.

Well, there's my opinion for what it's worth. I personally prefer RPG games because they tend to have much more depth to them, but I also enjoy FPS games when I don't feel like thinking as much.

    definatly both.
its fun to shoot things. its fun to make things explode.
its also fun to make your character unique. and since u cant really max our your stats in bioshock due to the scavenging technique, it adds some depth and thinking.

I second what is said above. If we are referring to the stereotypical rendition of each genre, then hands down RPG is vastly superior to FPS. FPS's haven't essentially changed much in 15 years, neither have RPG's for that matter, but there is just so much more depth and choice involved in the very definition of RPG's that cookie cutter FPS's cannot match.

I personally prefer good games for both genres, something thats been hit or miss in the past few years. A 'both' option would be what I would decide had it been there. The only FPS's I tend to gravitate towards nowadays are the ones that include RPG elements, or at least a tremendously innovative narrative, ie. Call of Cthulhu, STALKER, and of course Bioshock

FPS for me. And though I am looking forward to the RPG elements, I don't want some lame Oblivion style inventory/leveling up system that is all like "Congrats! You have assended to level 4! Why don't you rest awhile and meditate on what you have learned!"

    Hopefully Irrational will be creative...

Why disparage RPG by using a poor example, and not do the same for FPS? It could easily read "I don't want some lame Doom3 style shooter where I move from corridor - corridor, room - room and shot one monster at a time. Rinse and repeat like a broken record". If you're gonna pick one, please use some sound reasoning

O.K. Sorry if I offended anyone.....

All I was trying to say was that I hope Irrational integrades a new/effective/interesting plasmid leveling up system that works well for Bioshock.

Oh, and as a footnote that is totally off topic, has anyone heard about the so called camera system, where you take pictures of enemies to learn more about them? (I read this from a european site)

the biggest problem with alot of RPG's is that the class sytem, and levelling tends to be so formulaic that it loses it's flare game to game. FPS' have been so frought with cliche'd content I've generally stopped being interested almost entirely.

Bioshock looks to be innovative on both fronts, I have no worries of coming across a "magic missile" spell and the rifle found in the 3rd to last level surely won't be the uber weapon, so in conclusion, both in innovative ways.

I did read something about that from somewhere. While I'm sure there are a few things you can learn about a being by examining a picture of it, there's only so much you can learn. I think I'd prefer the research method in System Shock 2, but then I have a feeling that you'll have to research the pictures anyway.

However, it might be interesting if they can pull it off right. One thing I'm hoping for with the camera is if the game allows you to save the pictures as screen shots.

Isn't that what BG&E did with the camera? I agree with Soulsphere. There's only so much you can learn from a picture that will give any tactical edge, but that could be the edge between life & death. Ken mentioned this camera in a Xine mag a while back. This camera seems to be the equivalent of the chemical researching of SS2.

More and more we hear about things that are derived directly from SS2 mechanics. One hopes they don't go overboard trying to mimick every facet SS2 had. I know it's a spiritual successor, but innovation of gameplay should come first and foremost

I had forgotten about that. But, yeah, I think you're right.

I'm going to have to post some screen shots on this forum when I start playing Bioshock, especially if they let you do so with the camera.

I'm looking forward to the emergent gameplay!

I mean, who isn't looking forward to a computer game that features a real "living world".

I like a good RPG, but I've never been a fantasy nut, and I prefer an FPS perspective (I love it when I'm in the game world, as opposed to watching someone else). Dues Ex and SS2 did this well.

I also enjoyed Kotor, and I'm praying Mass Effect doesn't come to the PC or you'll never see me again.

FPS is probably the genre I play the most as there are more games that fit the criteria (FP and non-fantasy). Stalker, Half-Life (series), Battlefield (1942: Desert Combat mod, 2142) all currently grace my hard drive.

I'm interested in Bx to see how it melds things to together and where on the continum it sits (you can't divide FPS and RPG into two distinct groups anymore), but the game I want the most (I may get hung for saying this here) is actually Portal. I love a good puzzle, and a First Person Puzzler = win.

Other. Looking for a good combo of both that make for a unique gaming experience. Very interested in the 'Mood' & 'Story' of the game as well.

@Camera stuff, perhaps your ability to tap into security systems may yield more info. on the enemies.

    Other:

The aspects that might be reminiscent of adventure games. Basically being in and exploring the environment. The story. Interaction with the Big Daddies and Little Sisters. But having said that, if it wasn't a shooter the whole thing would probably interest me less.

If Bioshock had all the elements it does have but was also an interactive adventure I'd be in seventh heaven.

i agree, and i myself love both genres but i do tend to lean more towards the fps's with the good storylines and more in depth which explains why i like rpg's so much so it's nice to see a fps wth rpg characteristics cause as much as i love rpg's it's nice to see something besides lord of the rings middle ages type them, or something besids final fantasy.
