    18 - N's
    15 - R's
    14 - Y's
    10 - E's
    8 - W's
    6 - D's

we should try to discuss what we are doing so we're not all doing the same thing. also if you have any ideas this is the thread to share them with other people!

thanks so far for everyone who has helped out with the possible solutions of this puzzle! we all do work well together =]

so far, magicman4443 broke down the nixie puzzle as follows:

We were given the first sequence, which when decoded using the ADFGVX cipher given to us in the cipher book, became:
Hungry Hans last supped in a boot that can never go up.

The answer to this is U-336, which can be translated to NYDYDYEW.

Now, the puzzle will give you a new sequence. This translates to:
Look to the sea where the Baldur once sailed and spell the surname of the captain who failed.
The answer is Ragnarsson, which is coded to AWNAEWANNAAWNRNRRWAN.

This entered will give us yet another code which can be translated to:
In forty seven, a train last left this nest tucked within an ebon fowl's breast.
answer to the next puzzle thank you Varis

It doesn't work yet though. You just get the click.

Searching for coastal airports I got Kulusuk, Greenland.

Kulusuk means 'the chest of a Black Guillemot'. A Black Guillemot is a very black bird indeed.

Woah, how did you get all those words? I just got 53, but they are the only ones that can be made from the "anagram" and are in the dictionary.:

i think the box of letters around the title may have something to do with this- and look at mark's note about re-occurring letters. idk. just an idea.

anyone come up with any good sentances yet? i know we probably have to wait for the rest of the week to see what happens... but if we can figure it out now that would be cool too =]

The reason why I think it probably won't be openable yet is because rarely have we been able to solve two puzzles on the same day... the interminable wait for the 5x5 being a very good example.

well, you can fit Andrew Ryan into one whole slot, I think its got to do something with andrew ryan seeing as how you can exactly spell his name.

I think the answer is to include at least one of each letter, since they are provided, and the most elusive one is "x" which doesnt seem to fit in the sencences i've done. The words I have with an x are: waxen, axe, wax,ax and ex. And since none of them seem to fit for the moment, my "All must be used" theory may be wrong. Also, it would suck if we found out the answer prematurely and it wont open.
Also Bmess, there is no "y" option.

Could be a smoke screen? I know thats the first thing that everyone thought of when they saw this combination of letters. It seems a little too obvious.

On the linked diagram x is confused with y.

Agreed. Like the 5x5, we need a clue that we don't have yet. The puzzles have been getting more and more complex. I highly doubt we've got everything we need at our disposal yet.

You are only allowing each letter to be used once per word, while letters can actually be used multiple time in the current puzzle.

I would be surprised if they didn't use Eden.

I'm probally overthinking it but right now I'm pouring over the wiki's for the "The Wanderer" and "The Seafarer" poems.

Maybe I'll find a key word with all the right letters.

I've been plugging away with anagrams, and I just had a brainstorm; what if the solution is a call and answer, ie: the top being the call and the bottom being an answer?

I'm trying to remeber did Ludwig build the box before or after visiting rapture?

Could be important as far as his perception
ie ( something like Eden Dead, Dread, Warn, War.)

It would appear to be after, but we don't know for sure. (I'm 99% certain he constructed the red queen's race after returning from Rapture)

Barring extra clues you gotta think the answer lies some where in the flashing sequences.

Perhaps if the symbol is not flashed then that symbol can be ruled out for that particular spot or vice versa where the letter not pictured IS the correct symbol.

Also why does the last sequence run short?

I don't know if "reverse engineering" is frowned upon here, so I'll post my findings in spoilers:

The following raw text was extracted from the .swf file:

I will split it into its parts:

^ From examining previous puzzles, I've discovered that this is actually a security string to a PHP authentication page hidden in the website. When you solve the puzzle, the flash file sends an this string to the PHP, which allows you to download the "solution movie". Interestingly, trying to get around these anti-cheating mechanisms leads to a rather funny easter egg which I will post later.

    Talking

Here is that thing I mentioned in my previous post:
Go to: somethinginthesea.com/php/auth.php and right-click >view source you will find this:
    <script type="text/javascript">
    //var messages = ['I\'m watching you.','Stop it, that tickles.'];
    </script>

It's a javascript message left just for you, dear hacker!

    Question

I have a little theory of myself:
"...And the seven-fold lock will unfold", as Lutwidge said somewhere.
That lock should now have unfolded. So we're looking at it. We have a large bit of text (the flashed text), maybe we should 'fold'(compress) it seven times in a certain way. Or unfold... to get a question?

I have no idea how, but something tells me this puzzle is the seven-fold lock, so it would have something to do with it.

Since we're exhausting words here, here's another one.

The Aran Islands are located on the west coast of Ireland, nearby Lehinch Beach. Lynch was reported there initially.

I say just post the code then use different combinations of the seven letters to solve for the missing four until you get it right. It may take a while, but it is worth it isn't it?

I was thinking along these lines, too.

(Hi, I'm new here. Been following for a while, not really good with cyphers, but love the story.)

I thought maybe this was just some sort of "simon-says" so I took video of the sequence and played it back before the next sequence started. No dice. (Ah well, it wouldn't be fun to re-use the puzzle from the jewelry box, now would it?)

I think one telling factor is that the last sequence is short. I wonder why?

First off, your name = win. Stango is the best.

Secondly, I tried that last night. There are several lines that have words, but some of them just don't make sense. For example, line four has "Nye eye yea," so unless bill Nye the Science Guy's Eye has something to do with this that may be the wrong path to go down.

As in the answer? No, I am not sure I do. Lutwidge has time and again used the flexibility of language (even going so far as to turn language into math and then turnt hat math back into language) to "trick" us and test our knowledge and ability to extrapolate. I don't think the answer will be a random one. I just don't think we have the question yet.

I agree. Lutwidge says that once you solve the seven-fold lock, "its lights will lead you through the wreckage." I think solving this puzzle will give us a course through or a means of disabling Rapture's area defense grid, which means we're likely not going to solve it until just before Mark makes the final descent (unless we have to solve a door puzzle -.-). I also wonder if perhaps Mark solved the 5x5, then put to sea when he realized what he had - if he were worried about being watched by a government agency, it'd be reasonable to conclude that they were after the secret to Rapture's defense network, and thus going to sea gets him and the metal box away from them. Well...hopefully away from them...

Lutwidge said that a gyroscopic sensor will be turned on by completing level three and that the seeker has to be set to sea. Seeing as Mark has not yet got out of the port, I don't think all of the puzzle has been given to us yet.

I'm just wondering how much more he can physically fit into this box. I mean, this puzzle alone has gotta take up half of the space in that thing!
