Speaking of Tanks.... Akhab and I actually used them today. I was Spain; he Egypt.

Basically I did the usual Spanish thing: drop some HAs and LAs off to take a couple of cities. To be fair to Akhab, I had better map access. In any case, with my lead I went for Indust and then Univ., although I can see the other side of the argument.

But I made a crucial mistake, one I make every half year or so. On the same turn I could build Oxford, I also got a GS. In my stupid excitement, I GSed Corp. Pretty dumb. So of course next turn I get Networking. I had to look it up to see what I could do with it since I see the later techs so rarely these days!!

After that, old style tanks seemed like the best option.

I just felt sorry for Akhab as he had to wait another half hour to lose. As always, he was a good sport.

networking is not as dominating as adv. flight but half price uni's can be just as devastating. if you can grab a builder then the internet is a fast track to game over. if you are set on domination you can get to bombers or arty pretty quick.

I gs'd corp then built oxford the other day.
bombers would have been game over but as it was i lost to a knight rush.. actually that wasa bit silly I could have rushed lots of knights and defended properly but instead i was rushing for tanks and got caught a couple of turns too soon.

also had a nice game as egypt with useless oracle (arabs in the game) against a decent spainish player.
I lost my first warior .67 to .5 due to thinking oracle might work (silly me) and so had a slow start. I rushed up to CoL and expanded a bit then teched in Thebes and GB'd colossus (haha yeah he got invention fairly soon but nevermind I just wanted to get to Feud fast). He took the russian capital that was close to me (about 6 squares south).

It was looking pretty bad and I figured it was over if i didnt take some cities. So i build some knights but again since he is decent figured one wasnt going to cut it as he would probably have counters etc.

so i rushed two armies and a spare knight. the spare knight killed a horse army trying to sneek around behind be (from a hill) and the first knight army was killed by a pikeman army but the second finished it off. Then i formed another kt army and rolled over moscow with the two knight armies and archers. as it turns out i dont think he did have counters so i might have been able to roll him earlier (that was odd).

I then pushed past some of his forward defenders and took out his other cap (he said there was somthing glitchy going on there but i dont think he could have held out anyway. Then I landed my units on his main island on a hill between some of his cities and in a couple of turns, with some luck, gutted his empire (he had counters this time but i had just enough units).

    nice

how many knights did he bring? did you have both gold bonuses? it had to be the perfect storm to destroy your empire with all that going for you.

I had 2 hours to kill, and snuck up to my playstation to play a few games

All vs Venom because Liam conveniently went outfor some dubious reasons...

    Ah well;
    -English vs Spain
    -Germans vs Spain
    -Japanese vs America
    -Arabs vs Aztec

In the English vs Spain game I grabbed a hut and met Venoms Spanish settlers, whom I chased past America and tricked into letting me grab our sole barb.
Draw due to close start like this.

Germans vs Spain we both settled quite early, but I managed to grab London early and then popped a hut which gave me IW.....
->Ah well, I had an elite warrior army (medical style) and an elite loner (march) which turned to legions and helped me press my neighbours.
Grabbed a LOT of gold (280 at one point, so I rushed a barracks) and sent a lone LA to Venoms location whilst I had armies sieging both Karakorum and Moscow.
Venom attacked with lone horses 2 times and I walked into his empty cap (even tough I had a pop-up military advisor and the GA from culture making my screen go to the other side of the map)

Japan vs America; I dumbly settled on turn 1 >_>
-made 2 warriors, found 1 barb which had blue borders next to it...
Ah well, set up for the sneaky attacks, show 1 warrior and fake a misclick letting him attack the 2-flag barb once and taking it with my second warrior
But didn't need the gold because 2 turns later I got attacked by his sole defending warrior which beat my warrior, but my other warrior buttonraced the next turn for a walk-in
    Japan WON :P
    I BEAT AMERICA :P

And our final game I just went random granting me the Arabs (yay for fundy) vs Venoms Aztec (he mad at my rushing?)
-Move settler, pop hut and settle next to barb, grab it for 30g and meet aztec warrior, kill it and move up north towards its origins and use my WA to attack a freshly rushed warrior.
    6-1.5
    Game won by me

4 games in 2 hours is pretty good Sniper...

I just finished one game in about the same amount of time, Spain v. BrckCtyAssassin's CoR Egypt. It was a great, great game.

We settled close together but I got to Arab's first. Knowing he had CoR, my plan was to go straight to vet legions. What was beautiful is that I found the SoC, AW, 7C, Atlantis (too soon though, stupidly), and the AoC. Even with all that, though, it was a tough game.

I sent maybe 4 vet legion armies at him (with more on the way), with a HA and AA as well, but he teched so fast that after the beginning of my attack it wasn't too long before he had Pikemen. Soon afterward I had cat armies and was able to take one city after a huge amount of battles going back and forth with legions, cats, and his knights. He expanded okay, as did I -- luckily I was Spain since he controlled the mainland and conquered the other 2 caps -- and eventually he got his city back so that I once more had a mere 2 cities on the continent compared to a bunch of his.

But the AoC gave me a plethora of GPs and it wasn't too long before I had Oxford and won. So basically I now know I can beat a strong Egypt start with CoR if I happen to find almost every artifact imaginable!

Getting crushed in the tourney, so it's nice to be doing okay in H2H rising back up to the top ranks at 33-6, and without using the infamous power civs.

Got to get caught up. I haven't played many ranked games lately. I got an India mirror match against a guy I'd really whupped hard the time I played him before. This time he had a much better start as I was stuck on a peninsula, blocked by a barb while he had oak at his cap. He'd played passive before, so I was a bit surprised when he brought up a horse army. I killed it with warriors. I could see his cities were empty, so I moved forward. He brought in a second horse army (also a surprise) and the game froze when he attacked my warriors. I think I still would have had him judging by his performance in the prior game as I had a vet warrior in my cap. However, I'm not gonna give the poor guy the ol' "oh it just happened to freeze when you attacked me, but I think you should quit anyway" so I gave it to him. Nice to see someone adapting anyway.

I got a good French vs. China match. We each took caps and had a standoff, but his expansion wasn't up to par and he was helpless once the bombers showed up.

Last night before Duke came on I got Japan vs. Egypt. I was blocked on a peninsula, but got things going. I got a lucky 2v3 to take Athens. My opponent got 100 gold, while I hadn't but Athens is quite a prize. I located my opponent and figured I'd try a horse army, but for some reason he quit before we even made contact. If I had 100 gold and my opponent didn't, I might think I was doing okay, but I guess not this guy.

2 of those 6 came from our games recently correct? That certainly didn't hurt your points at all.

I like playing BrckCity. He is a fair player. I just don't understand why someone would play about 5k of h2h and use the Egyptians literally every time.

Yeah, just got back into the top 15 at 36-6 with a couple more wins, two of those losses going to you! All I have to do is avoid you from now on and it won't be long before I'm back in the top 10!

BrckCty is nice and fair. But I agree: a lot of those Egypt addicts really puzzle me. There's no other bad civ out there that gets played sooo much.

    Just had the funniest game...

My Aztecs v. Sr. Eagle's Aztecs.

I move, settle, and then 7C (on the mainland) is revealed to me from a village. I'm maybe 4 tiles away but Eagle gets to it first, I think from a galley off an island as I never saw his cap.

Anyway.... I get my second village around 3200 and notice that he's settled his 100 gold city not too far away on the continent (next to where he found 7C). I put my warrior on the galley that village gave me on the next turn and then in 3000 galley drop him---- for 106 gold! Ha!

So basically I got more than half his gold from 7C as well as his 100 gold city. I don't think I've ever got that much money from a city in 3000.

Greatest German start ever? 7 elite knight armies with religion, by 1400 or 1500 BC. I had two scientists(Feudalism and Religion), got Monarchy and CoLs from villages, and had had seven cities early.

I got a walk in early(turn three or four) on India, then used a road and warrior armies to take Japan. Loaded up three warrior armies on my second galley and teched IW, while sending four other elite armies to my opponent in the far north. Used the warriors(unloaded as legions) on the galley and took out the Aztecs. Then I grabbed SoC(scientist and humanitarian) with my original galley, while already having a scientist from Monarchy. The only thing that could have made it better was a builder from SoC for Samurai castle.

Yup, that's a pretty good start Ty.

For myself, there's an inverse rule by way of which if I'm doing well against forum players I go on a losing streak in H2H, and vice versa.

Right now I'm on the down swing against fellow members, in a totally suckified fashion!

Played Thrasher's Arabs with my England. I had very little land, and by the time he arrived with a HA, I had just enough time to sell a horse for my 100 gold, get my second city, and form an army as he took London---which I of course promptly took back. I assume he had cash since as far as I could tell he got his 100 gold more quickly than I and appeared to have better access to land---so I did the dumb thing which was to go for the Mongol cap as I figured he'd have defenses up in time for me. That's dumb b/c the usual rule of thumb is attack. But I had a galley on the way to KT and was hoping by the time it returned I could combine my forces after taking a cap and do some damage. But then I saw his second HA and realized I didn't have time for the Mongols... plus I saw that he (or someone) got 7C---so I figured it was now or never. I had a GA, and foolishly pressed forward hoping I could just get within range of a city, but never could and through some dumb tactics lost my HA and knight. Patience in cautiously approaching my opponent is not my virtue!!

And in a FFA with Thrash and MawPawk I once again got super stomped!!

But this time it was much more hilarious: My Roman settler runs into Thrasher's German settler so I take off past him toward the mainland---only to run into Maw's Indian warrior. SO I run past him too. Don't see much in the way of free money, but did grab one hut. I ran around for almost 10 turns, settled, and immediately see Maw's horse and warrior! Geesh: what great luck. I beat back his warrior on my forest with a WA---but I have no access to gold. I decide to take a risk---which never works for me against good players. I assume that he's assuming I have a WA in my cap----so I put my WA on a galley to see what I can find and plan to form defense in the meantime. I'm at 2 warriors in Rome when he shows up with a HA. Makes me look pretty dumb!!!

Oh well, I guess I learned to never assume what other good players are assuming or not assuming.

Two ranked games last night. The first was against a Spanish noob. I had the Aztecs, blocked on a peninsula by a barb. Mr. noob was working his city balanced so I had lots of time to get warriors to him. He got a defender as I approached, but I just used elbrecher and won easily.

The next game was better. I got the Aztecs again against Egypt (Stonehenge). It was a weird, snaky continent. I spawned near Seven Cities (is it just me or does that happen a lot with the Aztecs?). I settled with 50 gold, so just went straight to the galley, then horses. I took Tripoli and got religion. My opponent took Zimbabwe with a horse army. I found London on an island with my initial galley, so I went and grabbed that. A little late, but Fundamentalism helped.

My first army ambushed his and I found empty Zimbabwe. I figured he had a GA and it was a trap so I didn't take it right off. I tried bringing in an archer, but then it became clear he was trying to defend it and I was just dumb for not taking it, heh. Ultimately lost to an archer 13.5-4. Whee!

But I had cities on two double-dye spots by this point and then my second army found empty Thebes. He'd expanded decently, but had zilch for defenses while I had march. I took three cities real fast, but he had a knight army by this point and was making a play for Tripoli. It wasn't happening. I had over 100 gold per turn back in Fundy at this point and had gotten Feudalism off him. His knight army got wounded against an archer, making it easy prey for one of my knights.

He managed to kill my horse army over by Thebes with a single knight, but I just rushed out another knight to kill his. He was down to Zimbabwe and a couple other cities by this point and probably had no resources for more knights, so he quit and sent a gg. Not that bad a player. I think leaving Thebes open with no lookouts was probably a poor decision, but he expanded quickly and got that knight army out fast. On the other hand, single knight army rush against somebody who can go into Fundamentalism is risky, but at least he tried doing something!

First game back in 2-1/2 weeks and not only did I get reset on the board, but now I'm stuck in a frozen game with "anytime863". It started right after my first bomber run too...

Two hours in. I know it's not just a hard freeze because the "Waiting for @#%&!" keeps popping up.
Also I can get to his Gamertag page and see that he's still in the game, but has been "away" for two hours.

Glad I have two x-boxes for times like this, just wish I had a second Live account.

Had a good start and disappointing finish today. Ranked game against Four Fifths. He is decent compared to your average ranked crowd. My Romans vs his Indians. Awesome!

I get a walk in on France but Rome is in a crappy 1 tree 1 water spot. I decide to go horses because I see he teched HBR super fast or got it in a hut. We trade warriors. He kills a single horse with his army. He then kills another single horse that I used as bait. Then I lose the 6 vs 4.5 naturally. He goes on to take pop 5 China. We both have 100g.

I find 7 cities! I was actually planning on building a boat b/c I was told there was 4 artifacts. However, I had gotten one from a late barb when I had 26 hammers on one. My cities are pretty far apart. I manage a 25g road (That's a lot for the Romans!). I hold off his Fundy HA no problem with archers, march warrior army and hills. Took 3-4 turns to wound him but all is good. He is up 9-4 in techs. Quickly rush 4 settlers and slow tech Alphabet before I settle. Then I find SOC for double scientist. Hit 5 techs, settle 4 cities and GS Irrigation all on the same turn. Wow! Grab Lit bonus and backfill Iron Working and Masonry. I decide to go for the Construction bonus b/c I have a 3 hill spot with Iron. 11 production would be huge with the 1/2 cost Wonder bonus. He flips one of my cities and.... FREEZE.

Sigh. Was looking forward to uploading that game too.

We both played him today Duke. I agree, he's better than most. In fact he broke my 15 +/- game winning streak to slow down my climb to the top 10!

I had the civ advantage with Aztecs and he was India. I got two caps with two HAs, and a lot of mainland gold, but while I was doing that he sailed his boat to find 7C pretty early, and then SoC and the AoC a bit later. So I think it was at least an even game, though he may have had the advantage with all the artifacts.

Not much to say, I expanded while he grew, but his GPs allowed him to get to Indust. pretty quickly. Sometimes players can do well with with the building and growth strat if they get 7C and use their GPs wisely (he also used a GB for the EiTC).

Thread sounds interesting, though very cryptic. Seems like all the good stuff is in the pms?
I would be interested in the information, especially if it can help me prevent this stuff in the future.

I think more than that, I would rather just play player matches so that it becomes about the game, instead of the precious victory and rank. It seems kind of like the ring of power with some of these knuckleheads.

That theory makes sense. When you get CoR you feel like you've won the lottery and it's exciting. Even HGB makes me feel giddy inside!

I suppose they do have their strengths as well. If you're the kind of player who likes buildings, and you get the Trading Post form CoL, to which you add a library, it can be a significant boost with the right desert tiles. I find that hard to fight against even when I'm expanding well.

they are probably a good civ for noobs too, that want that occasional punchers chance that CoR with 3 or 4 deserts provide. the oracle can be a real fun wonder to mess with too. i don't think that many players know how to use it right. i come across it all the time owned by players that never tried to utilize its power. they probably got burned by the arabs and didn't understand what happened, just that it is a bugged wonder.
basically egypt can be as good as most civs (and better than many) in the early game, but after 14 techs you are getting heavily out-bonused by other civs.

Played one ranked game last night against Alitaba. We both went random. My French to his Mongols. We settled close and I had more gold. End of story! Cathedrals sure are useless in games that only go 5 turns. That game put me to #20 which is nice, but I hate robbing points from a good guy like Ali with such a stupid game (I like it if it's a less stupid game).

Just had a very fun and intense game against "adeptMaven" Xbox-H2H-ranked...

I drew a random Japan against his Aztecs.

Peninsula start, just north of the equator, head south with my settler. Goodie hut for 25g in 3900, settle in 3700 and get a walk in on the Arabs and Fundamentalism.
-While he finds 7CoG... (Aztecs always seem to be near this artifact!)

He plants his 100g city south of Tripoli, defended by a WA, which I lost a warrior figuring out. (Albino Alligator) Next warrior I send at him is backed by a H & HA which he can't see. I take the city and use my now 3 cities to make three more... 6 total and 2 HAs by around 1000 BC little slow, but had a good foothold.
-He finds AoC... (Another good artifact for the Aztec!)

Tech to COL, no bonus due to Romans somewhere on the map. He gets Irrigation and Literacy.
(I think I should and could have gone for LIT before switching back to gold. Missed that one.)

I'm pretty rich in gold due to the +1 food from sea tiles for Japan and a GH I used at around 8 cities. I continue to expand while he is grabbing all the mid-level tech bonuses. I took two cities from the Mongols after selling them COL and expanded. I'm making 70 GPT at around 500 AD, tech DEMO and switch 1 turn after he did.

At this point, minus the bonuses, we are about back to even in tech as I have expanded while he has been teching with slower expansion.

He uses a scientist on IND 1 turn before I was done slow teching it. (I had no GS nor did the AI.)
-That one hurt, I thought I was going to be done, but again I knew with my expansion my tech-ability had to be much better.

I had been banking 10 hammers per turn in one of my cities, so was half way done with Oxford by the time I got IND. Still took me a couple of turns on all gold tech to rush it, but I got it done and got bombers before he did!! ***More on this below***

Next turn I get my 500g GP, a GS!! I use the GS for CORP, switch all to gold in just the nick of time...

Following turn, he declares war, drops off a Pikeman Army and Knight Army backed by a cruiser fleet!!! I have enough gold to rush 3 bombers, plus the free 1...
I make 1 bomber fleet to take the pike army out, use the single for the knight army. Next move from him was a msg saying "gg".

Was hoping to play it out a bit further, but I don't think he could have kept up. It had been such an good game, I hated to see it end. So rare you get one that becomes a strategical contest you hate to let them go...

    Couple self critiques;
1.) LIT bonus is big, especially early in the game and even more so if you are going to bother building 10-20 cities. I should have made it a point to get that before expanding. I think the LIT bonus is a bigger deal than IRR. Thoughts?

2.) Banking hammers in a seemingly useless city from 1000 BC to whenever you need them pays off big and won me this game.
-The city I used for Oxford was an oak/2tree spot with 4 pop= 10 hammers/turn.
-The reason I was able to buy 3 bombers in one turn was because I had been banking 6-8 per turn in two other cities. One of the purchased bombers was for 0 gold.
A city with access to 3 or 4 trees set to hammers can be switched to units at will; at a time most relevant, providing the most up-to-date weaponry.

i would agree that literacy is more beneficial than irrigation in long games, especially with many cities. i've played maven many times he's pretty good. he apparently didn't have a department of redundancy department when he made his gt.

maven: (also mavin or mayvin) an expert in a particular field, usually one who is self-appointed and who seeks to pass his knowledge on to others. From Hebrew.
Adept: a highly skilled or well-trained individual

It's all situational. If I can grab Literacy in two turns, I'll tend to do it, but that's two turns you aren't doing anything else in. It can be a tough trap to fall into. Ultimately, it doesn't make a huge difference, but it's certainly nice to have. Same with Irrigation. The only time the bonus is really going to matter a lot is when you somehow have a ton of early cities or if both players go for it. Don't go for Irrigation and you can't waste turns failing to get it first. Even if you gain a mighty 8 pop off Irrigation, your opponent could have done the same by expanding while you were teching. It's not all that, but again is useful if you can spare the beakers.

Most people I play don't expand enough so I can cede Literacy and Irrigation without concern. Exactly what happened in your game.

Yes. Banking hammers is really important. You could hit Industrialization at 15 cities well ahead of your opponent, but if you have nothing banked and no gold, it may yet take you a while to get it built. 7 * 15 = 105 gold per turn. Oxford costs 1200 gold to rush in industrial and bombers cost 240 gold apiece. If you flip your 105 beakers to gold, you now have 210 gold per turn. It's still going to take you 8+ turns to have three bombers. A lot can happen in that time.

I've been gunning for it more since Ty a couple of weeks ago mentioned he likes to grab it. Basically when good players say they do something I just copy them with no shame! Anyway, what I've realized is that it's pretty nice as it naturally leads to Demo anyway, while Irrig is a dead end. However, I personally like Irrig in shorter games as it basically increases your city count by 50% without the time taken to grow and send out settlers and defend.

Great insight. I learned this one from Duke. I used to have all cities on trade until I would switch over to something else... which is pretty dumb. Hammers is good for both wonders as well as possible defense.

But personally I still have a tough time knowing in which games I'll need just one city on hammers or maybe another one as well... And also how soon to start the hammering. Since the elite players get Oxford so early, something tells me they start hammering even before 1000 BC when they can... but I'm torn sometimes between teching up to CoL as soon as I have the tech to do so or putting out another city for prod before that.

Had a good game against Squeaks. Or whatever his name is. He's in the top 10 with Zulu. I knew he was Zulu only so I picked Arabs b/c I didn't feel like losing.

I start on peninsula. I get Greeks. He gets America, Germans. Then SoC, AW, and I think I might have missed 7 cities notification b/c he had his 250 gold watermark in like 2400. I suppose its possible for Zulu. Anyways, he had a ☺☺☺☺load of gold. So what does he do with it?

First, he GB Trade Fair, builds library, and settles scientist in the same pop 3 city. Okay? Switches to Demo (and then demo glitches me for the rest of the game).

I take his 100g city with 3 warrior armies dropped off from a galley.

I expand. I get AOC with about 9 cities. This gets me an extra GP before I grab Monarchy first. GE, GH, GB. He takes a couple cities with Impies while still in Demo. Then switches to Fundy once I called him a cheater. Ha. Takes a few more. I GB EITC. I'm making about 160 trade per turn. Get Invention first. GS. Industrialization next turn. Rush a Crusier Fleet (He had 4/5 caps). Take a cap back. He quits.

#8 on the leaderboard... Zulu... 2 caps, lots of gold, GS, GB, Great Pyramid. And I played pretty poorly. Sigh.

that just shows how pathetically easy it is to rank up with zulu/america/china. who could be dumb enough to rush the trade fair in a library city? he didn't get a free market there too did he?

He got currency from 250 gold watermark, so no free market. Not sure if he built a market there or not.

Zulu with Fundy and 2 caps should win every game. He has the whole map. All he has to do is build 3-4 warrior armies and put them around my cities. No way I can expand.

I heard squeaks is actually a hyper-intelligent rodent. It's not really fair to expect him to be good at the long game when his life expectancy is only 1-3 years.

I don't think I have ever played the guy, but I have seen 4/5's name on a lot of people's profiles listed as a cheater. Can't verify it though.
