Lies scottie. You rage quit when you lose a good start!
Played one of the craziest games I have ever seen against Multi in FFA last night. While it wasn't H2H it became one in 10 turns. More of a crazy start for both of us than anything.
Ha ha yeah Scottie it's all about using all the tools for the job and having the mike definitely gave me an advantage when you were greece and I got SOC. Just to let readers know what happened I asked Scottie how his culture was knowing he didn;t have any being greece and insinuated I had a GA. He went on to defend outside his cities making them much easier to take!! ;-)
The next game I briefly muttered being way south and need to work my way up the map when I really had horses coming from the north!! He doesn't believe a word I say now!! ;-) ;-)
I got my first game in last night against ITZ denied's English, I used Japan. I had heard a lot about hiss ability to tech but nothing comes close to my Japans technological masterclass. Tech lead was 32 - 24 AFTER he backfilled a whole lot. I let him get to 24 to give him a chance with cruisers but then got bored so teched steel and finished with tanks. Good game fella. I rushed Oxford but didn't use a single bomber. Once again it was purely a preventative measure.
GG messed up giving you 2 caravanYou had 2 much of the map to work with I was at the very bottom if you noticed. Not to mention Spain. Did you get nav from them early or towards the end? I think Japan is my favorite civ to be honest. They are so versatile. You can settle them virtually anywhere and they will do well.
Actually I was right on your heels in tech until you GB'd EITC...
I could of taken Spain a lot sooner for nav but that would of meant giving up the builder that was settled in Seville. Had to walk a spy about 18 tiles sat on his trees with knights lol. I also made sure germans got to 5 techs as you were harassing them and wanted them to have 6 hammers per turn to fend you off. That seemed to take you forever to take them! Then Rome always defends with single archers so Sam castle Japanese knights overrun them. Easy cities.
got a couple of games in vs duke.
first i was india and he was arabs.
arabs took me quite by surprise - im not used to playing them so I got all paranoid at the start. In the end however duke was on an island so is attacks were pretty weak. I on the other hand was completely starved of gold. I should have just gold. I got spain for nav which i used to kill his galleys that came at me - but i had to hammer things thather than buy and i couldnt get to the other ai with any force.
in the end I had a brain explosion and sold nav to the egyptians and duke bought it then built a galleon fleet. he also had his 100g (i didnt) and another city so he actually had more cities than me now and more resources. pretty sad since i was the one who got the ai cap. anyway I called it when my pretty basic attack failed. was hoping he wouldnt see it coming and i might destroy some stored hammers.
next game my russians vs his mongols. he got greece and democracy early and i found him eventually on the other side of the map. couldnt get to him very easily... eventually when i did i just mucked around as I couldnt get around his obvious defensive point (his cap with some units infront of it and some roads form other cities.
then I called it. maybe could have just turned up and given him a fright then gone for a long game but probably would have lost. could have skiped the ai and just gone for him, might have worked but still it was pretty awkward to get there. He'd have to have played worse than me.
I think things to do different are.. dont sell nav (duh!)
probably prioritise my 100g slightly more so that i can feel a bit more comfortable with the game.
I saw 2 milita - should have automatically sent my galleon to own the sea between us.
move galleon and units on it at the end of the turn to avoid people spotting it
second game -
I think i should have left after duke spent up on defense. there is a chance there were soft targets elsewhere - but that cap certainly wasnt one.
shouldnt have poped 5 techs - i got confused between getting nav (also for the sea defense against his units that he built for defense going on the offense) and going for a galley based 4 tech rush.
Need to keep my cool when playing from behind - have a tendancy to just suicide against good players...
Scottie, how much did you get for nav? Were you close to 100g at that point?
First game back and get frozen!
I almost (but not really) don't blame the guy b/c I was a bit slow relearning the controls. It's been, I think, almost a couple of months. Most of it came right back, but in terms of strat I was really winging it and couldn't decide where to go and even what to research first. It was strange in the sense of being simultaneously familar and foreign.
Anyway, I pick Spain b/c I used to be very good with them and thought they'd be easy to pick up again. HogsIII was HGB Egypt. I used the famous cat strat. Sent out 3 warriors and then a galleon and started researching BW before Pottery, Masonry, and Math. Got 7C quickly and then SoC. I was still slow though and didn't start attacking Thebes with my vet CA/AA until around 600 BC. My vet galleon fleet could only help on potential defense as Thebes was located inland. I took it after my cats became blitz around 200 BC and had another CA on the way to begin attacking his other two cities before the game froze up.
It was fun to take a break from grading and didn't care too much about the freeze as I'm not playing for rank.
Zef, did you take any AI, and how many cities did you have before the freeze?
luck is a big topic these days. here is how my game went last night (my egypt whgb vs rome). i settle 1st turn on a hill with 2 forest/1 desert. i couldn't tell if there was a path south so i took the safe route. after 2 turns i move out my warrior. i see rome established 4 spaces away. i take a barb next turn for alpha. if i get gold here its game over, but i'm still ok with warriors every 2 turns. he takes a barb. i kill another warrior with a WA. he forms a WA and kills it 3-2 without a wound. i get lucky and win a 2-3 when it attacks thebes. i form a vet WA and lose 4.5-2.5 at rome. he sneaks a warrior past me to the south. i follow and eventually form a vet WA. i attack india ai's 2nd city and lose 4.5-3. rome got his gold a sneaks out a couple settlers. i send some out but am totally getting harrassed by india and ai america. i plan to steal a gb and gl but they both actively choke me in. if i can just pull off the moves i can get some elite cats out and end this painful game. alas, he has been expanding unseen and finally leaps ahead in tech. i weakly concede.
Played another game---my second in a couple of months. Once again, I felt like I really had no strategy. I used an easy civ, the Aztecs. My opponent seemed to be a noob, so it didn't matter that I was flubbing. He was also the Aztecs. I got a walk-in on Athens pretty early. I didn't have a HA until about 2700, which by forum standards is slow for the Aztecs---at least from what I remember. But the guy quit once I attacked one of his warriors with my HA. I guess no strategy needed this time!![]()
played 5 earlier today on my return. Random as usual.
First I get the arabs against spain I settled next to a barb turn 2. Spain settles other side of with gold and takes it. Loss.
2. France V USA - A bad looking map for me and thought I was in trouble. Guy quits on 5th turn? Win
3. Russia V Spain - Take the friendly in my starting map and the spanish settlers step next to me. Win
4. Japan V Greece - Guy quits when he sees my HA. Win
5. Germany V France - The only decent game. I settle early - Lose an elite army against the Zulu. Have to retreat an Infiltration Ary against Madrid 6-3, They have an army when I heal. so moved on to Moscow and fail at that too. Going to be the hard way then.
Got my gold, Barracks & built 5 armies while pulling a couple of settlers from my 100g city. Popped IW and took Moscow. Settler out of there. Skipped 24 defence Madrid and took their second city for Nav. France meanwhile drops of AA plus Catapult army at Berlin. I had 2 archers and 3 legions there. He made short work of the archers and my LA failed agaist his archers. He got my cap but not before i sneaked my builder out the back door. Another legion army on a hill takes out the CA as he moves towards my next city. Gives me breathing space to get knights and use the builder on sams castle. The knights take Madrid and I et Berlin back. Take out the Zulu and I'm in his area. He has knights too and a few bloody battles sees me down to my last army, but he's left with empty cities connected by roads. a hard fought win.
I recorded them all, but the Germany game failed. Shame, as the others are not even worth the effort to upload.
Too bad, the german match sounds like it was a good one. About how long did it take?
Both of us have come back after a long time and seem to be confronted with a lot of easy victories: 3 for me (though one froze) and 5 for you (just one was tough for you). Maybe that's a good sign as it shows that there are new players out there still picking up the game...
I saw Scottie but since I'm still uber-rusty I know he'd just crush me. So I played H2H against Slick Rick this time, and I got a little faster with the Aztecs. I'm still taking the easy civ! This time I got my HA together in 2900 and then attacked his HGB Thebes 9-9 from a hill in 2700 and won. That was lucky. I figured he beat my warrior on the hill the turn before so the Gods owed me... but that's not a reliable strat!
4 straight victories proves I'm still better than noobs even while being very, very rusty and knowing only how to horse rush. But if I play one game against MawPawk or anyone else here, my fate would be sealed!
Blast it! Lost to my arch-rival: the 4000 BC freeze.![]()
...reminds me of a funny quote.
"Going to war without France is like going deer hunting without your accordion."
BTW Im thinking of having some practice mathes.
Not quite like a normal game where we basically tell eachother everything we are doing on the mic. Im thinking it could be a good learning methods. Anyone interested?
Sorry we couldn't connect Scottie. It would have been fun to be crushed once again by your onslaught of legions and cats...
I don't remember if there's a way to make my connection to you better, but if you remember what you did last year (which seemed to help) maybe you could PM me so I could do the same. Thanks.
Well, I don't think I should use Aztecs anymore in H2H. I thought I'd need them after being so rusty, but they're just too easy against H2H ranked. On one account I lost due to a cheater. Then I played 8 games on another account and won 6 easy ones while "losing" the other 2 to 4000 BC freezes. I thought you typically get 4000 BC freezes after long games or playing a high number of them, so after a very short game I skipped the process of exiting to the dashboard but the next game still froze. So the lesson appears to be to always visit the dashboard between games.
Maybe competition is different on Xbox but in my experience they are far from unbeatable on ps3 ranked. I have beaten many players using them with non-power civs (like spain). I admit i don't lose often when i use them and i love using them (about 50-60% of time). But, there's several good players who make me really work for it using non-power civs or even outright beat me.
I think I just haven't run into the good players yet. Good players and bad players seem to come in streaks for me...
I finally had to work for a win today. Not b/c my opponent was good, but b/c he was Zulu and I had a bad starting location.
I was Arabs in the NE corner isolated from most of the map. I walked south and then west only to run into Athens blocking my passage. I had 0 gold and settled next to just one tree since Athens, two tiles away, was working the other tree. I knew I was taking a risk, but luckily I pulled it off. I pushed out my warrior in 3200 (or maybe it was 3300) hoping that by putting my warrior on the forest Athens would be a turn slow in creating its pikeman. (I forgot if it typicaly comes out in 3200, but that's what I seem to recall.)
The next turn I had Athens... so at least I had something! In my two cities I made a pikeman to block the land bridge from Zulu and another warrior to grab a village I skipped behind me. Got my 100 gold and pushed out two galleys on the two sides of the land bridge and started researching in Democracy.
To bring this to a close, I got cats and attacked the Zulu cap from a hill at 1200---not too bad for having got my first warrior out of Tripoli in 3200 (or 3300). But in retrospect perhaps I should have just gone with a vet HA from the hill since my opponent didn't seem to have great defense. Yet I played it safe knowing how Zulu players love AA's.
This game makes me think Greece could be dangerous if they could just get on AI cap and their 100 gold. Not too many turns to Math from that kind of start.
Edit: Just realized Rookie/Rusty mistake. I actually researched math as Arabs!! uggghhhhh!
got a game in vs chief rolcka in ranked.
i went egypt to see if i could get a fair game - but he went arabs so no fair on him
we settled close and i got hanging gardens.
I used a hut to get bronze and set up some defenses and we both of us got our 100g . he had 2 ai on his side and i had one kindof on my side. sio he started threatening them all and i threatened my 1, however hanging gardens was goiving me a little bit of a production advantage and i got my gold just a little faster and was using a more forward defense so I started to get the upper hand in map position. I used it to find the ai on his side and start bullying them too. meanwhile I blocked his cap's forests while setting up counters behind the units.
then with him a bit pinned in i teched Iw and started trying to bait him into attacking my units (or to set up a fortified AA by his cities either was fine). each time I'd counter attack, trying to upgrade legions and so forth so that his religion was neutralized and my production would pay off. Eventually he attacked and lost a couple of warrior armies and then quit with nothing much left.
A double move attack was probably on the cards (and he used the diplo to block it once even though I actually just carefully positioning units) since I had much better prod at this stage but I think i played the safe game here as the game just slowly and inevitably sliped out of his hands.
got a couple more in.
my egyptians vs a spanish guy. i did a standard horse rush with the oracle egyptians - got an ai cap (usa) and then found a cap he had taken with a caravan in tow while he was on 8 tech and me on 2 i think (but CoL coming up and a GA).
was ready to flip his city but sent the horse next to it to try to scare him to build somthing extra in it (waste gold) but he just emptied his AA out of it and i got a free walkin (huh?) then he quit...
and one vs some other dude, my mongols vs his russians. I got a horse army up and had a go at the nearby aztecs, i failed (wasnt worth the risk so i retreated on a 9 vs 5) and went looking for easier prey (like some japanese across the way) I found him with a single warrior and killed his first warrior - then he attacked me out of his cap and lost.. then he quit.
pity I had 1 march HA and another HA soon to be built as really I only needed one single warrior....
next my germans vs iamtoowongforu's spanish - got a great start - english walkin - then took china with a march wa and he was close so he quit.
and just now one vs boss man - my germans vs his japanese. he teched up to about 10 tech, I just built a barracks and hammered out some warriors. realised getting to knights would be tough so i targeted spain and killed them for nav. i then loaded the galleon with warriors and went the long way towards him. was still a bit concerned until i got a ga and flipped his 100g city. now i had good tech (GA seem really good for germans) and excellent production. I got 2 more galleons together joined them for a fleet. i headed for his library city and a hill next to it. he protect the hill with a AA, but that wasnt even close to strong enough, so i landed next to it and he moved the AA back into the city. I didnt bother with the hill when i saw him defending at about 9 - i just attacked and killed him. No problem at all as i had focused on infl upgrades.
So I took out his library city with about 5 legion armies with fleet support. then he quit.
nice run of wins lately.
