Plane Wreckage - Has anyone tried this?

When you see your first sight of the lighthouse, there is a walkway down to the other side of the water. Has anyone tried to swim far out or anything and if so, what happens?

I'm curious and would try it myself but I let a friend borrow my hard drive to try out the demo for himself.

I tried it...probably the first thing i tried. If i am right, you don't move that much but it gives an illusion of you doing so.

but wouldn't that be a great easter egg for the final version? if you swim long enough in the wrong direction, then finally land comes in sight or maybe the highest tower of rapture is looking out of the water or... what about seeing rapture under the water? because I've always wondered why you can't see it altough there are so many neon advertisments, etc..

  9. #9
That would probably be the greatest easter egg ever.

Did anyone else notice that weird handbag right next to the plane ? All that sticks out of the water is a rounded handle but you can't move it. After the tail sinks it floats to the surface & is moveable like other objects.

As for not seeing Rapture from above it's pretty deep under water if you watch those depth signs when you're in the bathysphere.

there is an invisible barrier that stops you. I don't think this should be an easter egg, I think that if you don't make it to the tower in like 10 minutes, you drown and the game re-boots.

wouldnt that be something.. the message wopuld be " Congratulations! you failed to be able to see that the only thing that you needed to do was go up the steps" then the 360 explodes

your 360 does explode. you get the red ring of death b/c Jack starts to cramp up from swimming for so long and the 360 feels his pain.

If you swim far enough you can find the the beta Nazi island that was originally going to be the main area of the game.

Heh -or they could have gone for a "In the Mouth of Madness" moment and had it so as you swim away from the lighthouse, it loops and you find yourself swimming towards it; only the plane and fire are gone and it's all just rusted debris.

    awesome fake easter egg

it makes you go back in time like you swim away from it but it loops and you see it again this time its all shiny and new, and its daytime you also notice new arrivals for rapture including diane mcclintock and frank fontaine walking hand in hand.

  21. #21
yeah but wouldnt it be smarter to swim to the lighthouse instead? i mean if theres a lighthouse in the middle of the ocean, there wouldnt be land in any direction even if you try. although you probably should have waited outside the thing though.

Another moderator (CherryIcee) did some ghosting and flew up to the top of the tower.

Trust me. The water does end.
Of course, I have no idea what happens when you get there...

The water has a pattern, which Cherryicee showed, so it might go on, just recycles the pattern.

Its so far down, you wouldn't be able to see it.

Notice how long it took for the plane parts to smack into the tunnels? And I'm pretty sure they measures in exact leagues or fathoms, but I don't know sea measurements well.

I've tried swimming away, didn't work. Sure it looks like you're swimming AWAY from it, but if you notice, you're swimming in a big circle around that whole area.

yeah Diane was going out with Ryan then she joined up with me

Rapture is pretty deep down, see how long it takes you to arrive there. All the way down then Ryan's speech before you actually get there

It would of been funny if they did have land in the game but it took you over an hour of swimming and the moment you saw it, Jack gets a cramp and drowns.

What should happen is you swim for a mile or so and then a bunch of wild bunnies surface and start hopping on you.

One fathom is exacly 6 ft. 18 fathoms would be 108 ft. Looking at the buildings "outside" in Rapture there are many that would easily be over 108 ft tall (that is only about a 10 story building or so).

I would assume that Rapture must be much deeper than that (even though that is the last depth reading we see). With the thousands of bright neon lights all glowing brightly at the same time any aircraft flying over at night would very likely see something, although it would most likely not be anything more than some "mysterious" lights.

Anyway...this just proves how immersive the game is...we are curious why it would or would not have buildings breaching the ocean waves. Ha.

You can swim backwards away from the lighthouse and see that you only actually move so far and then are stopped and after that you're just swimming in place. The lighthouse doesn't even get that far away from you before you're not actually moving anymore; it's just an illusion.

I find that overthinking my games impacts my enjoyment.

Having said that, the bathysphere deposits you fairly high up in a large building. So that 18 fathoms isn't the depth to the lowest levels of Rapture.

You do look outside at some tall buildings, but after that first level, your depth is unknown.

I agree. You're so deep that it's really dark outside when you look out a window.
