    Talking 1st Win!

Okay, I promise I'm not going to be a complete dork whenever I win, but this first one on MP feels good to get out of the way! I lost my first one today b/c of all sorts of dumb mistakes on my part. Plus the other guy (we are mostly guys, right?) seemed pretty good to me. In my second game, I actually made some of the same mistakes: most glaringly, I once again forgot to manage my workers from day one. What's up with that!!?? Well, for most of the game that put me behind in the tech race by 3-4 almost to the very end. But I kept with the smart advice of the good players here in the forum by constantly expanding, while for some reason my Japanese opponent (I was Zulus---yes, a noob civ!) kept to about 5-6 cities. I wiped out the Russians during the BC era, while he defeated the Indians much later in the Industrial Age. I guess by the standards here in the forum, he may not have been too good---but he seemed to do a fair job of getting his techs and putting up tough resistance even after I got the EIC and Leonardo's Workshop and pushed toward his capital with many, many tanks and artillery. It goes to show that the number of cities will win in the long run---but everyone here knows that. In fact, I should have started the assault earlier.

Well, that's it for gloating! It was an earth-shaking global war between two noobies, and one of them won slightly over the other.

But here's a quesiton if anyone cares to take it (if not, no big deal): With so many cities, I had a difficult time keeping up with his pace. He was very quick, and thus I had hardly any time at all to direct my forces around the globe. I ran out of time half the time---geesh! What to do when one guy has only a few things to control and the other guy has way too much on his hands??

Oh---and on a personal note, how do you go to the bathroom between turns??? Okay, nevermind---please don't answer that one!

I'm 1-1!!! Yay! All the best, Zefelius

    congrats on the first win!
Just don't become a zulu-only player, unless that's what you really want to do. for some ppl that's the only fun they get from the game and I wouldn't want to take it from them. I remember Jaysellshondas had over 1000 games played in H2H, and all of them were with the zulus. that seems a little overboard to me.

but in reference to another thread, you will learn more playing with good players than just a bunch of noobs that you build more cities than and get an easy win. I do understand wanting to get your feet wet jumping from single player, and it does take a little getting used to working out all your turns faster after being used to having no time limit.

and, going to the bathroom is no joke if you're playing a game that lasts hours. My wife just laughs at me sometimes when I dart from one room to another when I have something to do while I'm playing the game.

but yeah, if you ever wanna add me, do so, and if you don't want to face me heads up, we could play a team game together against the AI, and I could show you how I play firsthand (since in teams, you can see your teammates cities through the fog). It's a good way to display strategy and talk about the game and share advice. if there's ever any strategies you wanna see firsthand, I could show you.

this goes for anyone, if you ever wanna meet up online, I will, if I'm not currently in game and not too busy at the moment.

Thanks. And that's a great offer. Can't wait to play once I have a bit more experience. You'll definitely be hearing from me... Best, Zefelius

That 32 oz Big Gulp you finished half an hour ago? The cover comes off. When you're done, replace the cover so you don't spill, but DO NOT replace the straw! This way you won't accidently take a swig in all the excitement. Trust me, you don't want to make that mistake.

I just started dabbling in MP. SP has gotten stale - I unlocked all achievements and the AI is more annoying than challenging. In my two MP games so far, I've had two losses, both against good players in FFA. It is kind of amusing how someone summed up most FFA games and these two were no exceptions: Fairly early in both games, two players dropped. I managed to hold my own in both games until the 1700s at which point I got handily trounced - not that it wasn't predictable (to me anyway). I'm still trying to get a handle on the different mechanics compared to SP.

So, here are my st00p!d n00b questions:

When your done with your round, just hit [B] (on the 360, anyway) to end your turn, right? You don't have to do anything else? Then if you're the first to end the turn, the clock starts counting down, right?

If your covering a large part of the map and other players are moving into view offscreen, what happens? For example, say I'm camping on the Ark, hopin to have more than 1 city before I grab it, will I get sufficient warning that someone else is moving in, or is this just a bad tactic?

How the heck do you have voice conversations? I see my kids do it all the time in COD, does anyone talk in this game?

How about sending text messages? Do you have to [pause] the game to do it? (which would, of course, be uncool to other players)

What is the "resynchronizing"? Does it mean a player has left a game and came back? Can a player leave, let the AI take over, and then come back?

I haven't seen any show stopping bugs in only two games, but the lag is incredibly disappointing, especially when I see my kids hitting a movement-packed COD game with many more players than CivRev has. I take it that it is normal to send a move command and have a 2 second delay before it executes?

Lastly, is there a graceful way to bail out early for whatever reason? I mean, it's other people playing, not just a machine, so I figure courtesy should count for something.

Today mine was a Tully's cup. Yup, I hate to admit it, but it came in handy more than once!! From what you said in your comment, it looks like we're pretty much at the same stage of this game. Deity has gotten easy for me too (at least with some civs---I need to go back and practice with the weaker ones), while I definitely haven't mastered H2H yet---just lost today as a matter of fact (I played the #3 guy and he beat me in less than 1500 yrs if I remember correctly). Anyway, I hope someone answers your questions: I wanted to ask myself but I've already asked so many! Here are some of my own personal guesses: 1) Quiting is okay in the usual way (as with SP), as long as you're not pausing to do some kind of freeze. I agree with you: it seems a little cold and blunt, but I don't think there is another way---except to continually get your butt kicked until the other guy finishes whatever he wants to accomplish. And 2) I think the resynchronization is just the game, and not the other player.

Anyway, I hope someone answers your other questions, because I'd love to be able to chat to the other person and ask for an agreed upon break once or twice. That would be helpful!!

Oh, and maybe you can help me: Do you know how to add someone's gamertag on the Xbox---to set up a game or something? I'm assuming that's partly what the gamertag is for, but I'm so bad with games I don't even know how to get it (even when someone offers it to me in the forum)! Pretty pathetic, I know, but I've purposely avoided videogames until last year b/c I was afraid of getting addicted---and now I am! Maybe you can help with that one...

    Cheers, Zef

    yes

you can only see what's moving in the tiles right beside of you. you can only see "one tile far". but you can see one more tile using a militia or placing a unit opon a hill.
i don't know if you see what's 3 tiles away when putting a militia on a hill. i'm also not sure if you see 2 tiles with a boat that carries a militia but i don't think so.
so it's prolly a good idea to put units near the ark to see if someone is coming for it. but it's always risky since you don't always realize that: you could be busy on another part of the map. if i find the ark very early and i have one city only i just take it. better than nothing.

How the heck do you have voice conversations? I see my kids do it all the time in COD, does anyone talk in this game?
you can use a mic/headset/whatever it is. i don't do that but meanwhile i take it into account. i know that MadDjinn uses one so if you need further information you can probably ask him.

you should have access to a xbox menu which is independent from the gaming screen. here you can see and respond to messages. on PS3 you just press the PS button, I'm very sure it's similar on xbox.

What is the "resynchronizing"? Does it mean a player has left a game and came back? Can a player leave, let the AI take over, and then come back?
the game resynches for a lot of reasons, for example if someone has left the game. i'm sure Grayson knows a lot of this stuff.
i think you should be able to return to a game randomly if it's unranked but you can't choose to come back to the same game, can you? you can "join" an unranked game so you can prolly also "rejoin". but you shouldn't ever be able to join or rejoin an advanced ranked game but it happens due to all the bugs in this game.

yes it is normal. but it doesn't happen often to me. and if it does then it's just a singular lag which everyone suffers under. not a big deal imo.

Lastly, is there a graceful way to bail out early for whatever reason? I mean, it's other people playing, not just a machine, so I figure courtesy should count for something.
i think a lot of beginners just leave the game early if they wanted to check out mp or something like that. other ppl just quit early because they don't like how the game turns out for them. i don't like both of these. but it also happens that you have something more important to do than playing. this one time a player wrote me a message entitled "sorry" which said: "my 3 year old just woke up. have to go" and then quit. i found that very courteous and ok.

I also know about the resynch, but it's hard to tell you every reason. A resynch can delete some of your units or change production sometimes. That happens if the host leaves I think, or when you start without anything like great people with americans.. When you can't see some units, when you attacked a unit while the other one moved and you got a unit with 0.0 attack or something like that. If you moved in the same time in a battle it could resynch if you did something and your enemy couldn't see it..

Nope. Militia+hills don't see 3 tiles. The scout upgrade do the same thing as the militia.
Boat see 2 tiles of water away , but only 1 tile of land away even with militia inside it.
