A bit of a lame topic,but I'm blaming insomnia!-Anyway heres a few stinkers.
DOOM
HOUSE OF THE DEAD
ALONE IN THE DARK...AND GOD FORBID BIOSHOCK IF UWE BOLL GETS HOLD OF IT!!
I can just imagine THE ROCK as a big daddy!-and lets say(cos i'm cruel!)britney spears as a little sis!

The gears of war is bound to be a flop unless it's so loosely based on the game that the similarities are few and far between. While it's a good game it's so laden with overused concepts and characters that a movie translation would come out worse than Doom.
On that note Doom was the worst video game to movie translation in the history of either genre. I'm not sure if I understand the need to remove all aspects of a massive cult sensation barring the location and then reinserting them as the movie progressed but only in reference form... i.e. after it all breaks out several soldiers and scientists can be quoted as saying "this is hell" and then describing the main protaganist as having some super-human gene.... Horrible, just horrible. My cousin whom just graduated from elementary school and has no interest in gaming whatsoever would've been able to put together a better Doom movie than that -spits-.
The only game based movie so far that actually kept the spirit of the game alive was Silent Hill. It might have worked just as good without the witchhunters' coven in the purgatory, and more of the original game story instead, but this part fits in quite nicely I think, and apart from that the movie is good to watch.
Every single other one though sucked. Some more, some less. Mortal Kombat close to not totally sucking, because though being stupid, it was still a very entertaining movie to watch. Something of a guilty pleasure.
What's the problem is that most games that are made into movies have stories that are in turn based on certain cinematic cliches. Mortal Kombat for example is somewhat of the essence of cheap 80s Hong Kong (-esque) martial arts movies.
Resident Evil just takes a ton of generic zombie movie cliches and mixes them together with some signature names.
Making movies from those games is like making a copy of a copy of a copy.

Games that are thin on the plot and/or whose protagonist is one-dimensional (eg: Duke Nukem) can be great games as long as the gameplay is there. Movies on the other hand need a solid plot and character development; without it you're sunk. (Isn't that right, Sunshine?) Uwe Boll notwithstanding, a lot movie producers can't see that and and simply think "the game made a ton of money, ergo the movie will make a ton of money".
And don't even get me started on games based on movies.

Thats frightening,i had no idea so many were in development,Raveness mentioned SILENT HILL as an example of when it can work out,though having said that,SH more or less is a literal interpretation of the first game,the director has simply filmed his favourite scenes using actors rather than polygons!
I like the res evil movies, I don't think they did bad either. There's also the Halo and Gears of War movies coming out. Along with Postal (by uwe boll)

I think the only one I've seen is Street Fighter. I like watching trash television when I'm really depressed, and this was on one day and so I plonked myself down infront of it.
I wasn't really expecting much, but it was actually quite funny, with quite a dark and dry sense of humor. Very self-depreciative, such as the scene with Raul Julia where he's painting a John Wayne Gacy style clown picture of himself whilst talking to the protagonist.
Mario was really awful, the others I've not seen.

Agreed. The only genre that would translate well into a movie/cartoon would be adventure games, because movies, like books, are a linear medium, and adventure games (most of them anyway) are closest to that. Well, when you exclude the puzzles.
I liked the way games like Still Life and Scratches use cinematic conventions. I'd rather see a game packed with cinematic cliché's than no cinematics whatsoever.
i started Still Life,but gave up cos the Xbox version interface was awful,I remember trying to enter a four digit code into a keypad dozens of times,the game was promising though,anyone else played it?
Overall every game adaptation made has failed miserably, and left a path of destruction on the credibility and potential of the genera. There were a few that tossed around interesting ideas or had some good moments but nothing succeeded in transcending the miserable record of video game adoptions. The main reason for this failure is the lack of understanding many of the directors and writers have of why the game and its story worked, and how it can make a transition that enhances these qualities. Unfortunately, as long as we have men like Uwe Boll video game adaptations will continue to stink and the future for the genre will be a miserable sea of mediocrity. While I have a feeling most of the films on your list will fail miserably both critically and finically, one of the games adaptations that catch’s my eye is The Suffering. While there is little information on the team making the film or how well it would be adapted this is one project I feel has potential. While the game itself didn’t change the way I looked at the Survival Horror genre, it was a trilling experience none the less with some of the best design horror creatures in any media, and a sound system and atmosphere that kept on edge though the entire experience. There is no question I my mind the game has potential for a great a film adaptation, to make it work you need to get a director and crew together who would take the film on with the same approach used by Ridley Scott in Alien (1979). The end result could breathe new life into the horror film industry, which has long gone stale, and produce a film that can actually scare, rather then just sicken. But once again The Suffering would not bring anything new to the genera, not the way something like a BioShock or Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem adaptation would, but those are another story for a different column.

I actually thought DOOM the movie wasnt that bad as long as you forgot it had anything to do with the games. Yes, as a videogame movie it was rubbish, but as a regular movie I quite enjoyed it. Mortal kombat was kind of funky as well in a sort of cartoony way.
