    Lightbulb A Demo Observation/Crackpot Theory

Hey all, long time fan of Bioshock, only just started using this here forum though.

Anywho, I downloaded the demo the other day (used up the last of my download limit but was totally worth it) and have played through five or so times.

It's lived up to all my expectations.

Now, a little something I noticed. I have always thought that Atlas' name is a little strange, albeit very cool.
However, on my second go through I noticed something - the statue in the Kashmir Restaurant is of Atlas from Greek mythology.

    Isn't this a little strange?
The fact that your savior/guardian happens to have the same name as a giant statue in the middle of a (what seems to be) a very popular section of Rapture?

I read somebody on the forums supposed that Atlas is in fact Fontaine, though I doubt it as Fontaine is a French name and Atlas is pretty darn Irish.

I wouldn't be surprised to find his name isn't truly Atlas though.

    Thoughts?

Atlas Shrugged is a book you might want to pick up.
It might explain a few things.

    by Ayn Rand?

    Yup, I'm aware.

Still think his name won't be really be Atlas.

Though, it might end up being just that and I'll look the fool.

I personally, trust Atlas and Tenenbaum more than I trust Andrew Ryans, from what I have seen in the videos and demos. Most lead to Andrew being the bad guy, from the woman in the bathroom to the destruction, personally I think Atlas has done bad things but wishes to make up for them. While Andrew is just looking out for himself.

I agree. Either that, or I'll be led blindley into these guy's plans.

I'm reluctant to see Andrew Ryan as the antagonist and be done with it, considering at one time or another I've been objectivist and still am a fan of rational self-interest, and therefore would share a lot of the same beliefs as Ryan.

maybe Ryan is looking out for more than himself but for the future of rapture maybe not hte people but the place even though it is flaling apart a bit

I think Ryan is just looking out for himself. Listening to him talk while in the bathysphere, it is like he had this idea of how the world should be and no one was going to tell him otherwise. We all disagree w/ different aspects of the way government works no matter where you are, but our differences and disagreements make us stronger and better. Tyranny is what Ryan ultimately stands for, with no one able to reason w/ him. But that's just my thoughts after playing the demo.

Naah I don't think Ryan's original intention was to create a tyranny. I think Ryan is an anarcho-capitalist. And to be honest if my thoughts about Ryan's thoughts are right, I would have moved to(well if it was real) Rapture in it's good days if I had the chance(well it fell apart, but I wouldn't have known it at the time).

Now, since Big Daddies are repairing and keeping up Rapture alive, doesn't that lead us to the next point? If you destroy a large amount/every Big Daddy that you discover, will Rapture fall apart at the end, collapsing, since it's last sense of workers are gone.

he wasnt a tyrant at all until the plasmids started changing people then he had to take control so obviously you are correct in stating the fact that he wasnt trying to create a tyranny

Hey... you know what I *just* realised?

Rapture is built under the Atlantic sea.
The Atlantic sea is named after Atlas the titan.

Ryan Andrews when he made Rapture wanted a free society without the restraints of a normal government led to the splicers and Ternerbams Revolt and eventually the BD and LS

I believe that Atlas is partly the leader perhaps of the faction that turned agaisnt Ryan. in the demo im sure that in the recording of the woman in the restaurant when they get attacked on new years eve 1959 im damm sure you can hear "Long live Atlas , Death to Ryan" so he must have beem a prominant leader in the rapture civil dispute along with fontaine.
