    Hud

Im not here to whine or anything. Im just curious what the hud would look like.
What would you guys like to see there? For me, i would like to see speedometer with fuel indicator, a minimap and of course health of player and team mates.
Here is a basic layout of what i had in mind. It's an official screenshot that i modified a little, so i don't think I've broken any rules of this board

Remember though the health system is one of regeneration and not a health "meter".

Also: That car's running on no fuel!!!

Hmm that's some nice editing, I totaly agree with your view of the hud! Maybe the fuel indecator should be a little more noticeable cause I had to zoom in to see it (probably cause I'm sitting in the sunshine and I can't see my screen as clearly as inside...). But Nice job I'd say

I think there is nothing has been said about ( Heads Up Display ) but I desire to see the modern games style where There are ( Mini-Map at the Left bottom corner , Weapon icon at the right top corner , Money counter at the left top corner ) . Also , it will be better to hide these Icons through playing and when you press on the left Pad for instance , all these icons appear for a little while ( Yes , as GTA IV style because it's very nice ) .

I hope there will be a HUD, even if it is a HUD that disappears.

Well, there must be HUD in game. You made it look futuristic, but it should be more in 50's style.

Yup, it did look a bit "off" but i just wanted to give basic impression of what should be there. I hope they give us speedometer and minimap, ammo and if they go with the old health system, HP.
The speedometer i used was from 1950 Ford Coupe
Minimap obviously from mafia 1, I added some filters to it.
    health/ammo was made by me.

He meant the car in the screenshot (the edited one with the HUD)is out of fuel and still running, nit that there wont be any fuel in Mafia II. (just to clear it out)

I like the idea of no hud, it makes things appear more cinematic, like Dead Space, that was very well done.

The splash hud idea - press the button for the hud, when you leave the button, it disappear, seems to be good.
It doesn't destroy the cinematic feel and also everybody can check all in an instant.

Map was very good in mafia. Much better than in GTA.

all i want is a speedometer with fuel and they also confirmed a map like the first one.

This is all part of their effort to keep you in the cinematic experience as much as possible. While there will be a HUD, and indeed a proper minimap this time, such things are optional.
excellent, nice to know the screen can be uncluttered if you want it.

actually there will be a HUD that you can turn on and off, (it was in that score magazine) and adjust what you want on ie. map but no speedometer or no health meter but a map.

    No speedometer?
That means theres no fuel either... Why are they dumbing it down. When i heard about mafia 2 i thought that they will but in these brilliant features of previous game and add new ones, but instead they chose to take those features out and add nothing new than a new story, city and graphics. I dont think that this game will be as revolutionary and as good as the first mafia.
I hope I'm not the only one who feels like that.

    I hope you're right.
And yes, it would make sense if the police would still give tickets for speeding, not just killing and vandalism.

Maybe a developer could give us some information about speedometer and if the cars still have fuel?

I think is is a question for 2K_Mark or 2K_Denby and it's something I've wondered about.

Will there be a view from the inside of the car like in the original Mafia, with dashboard/console, speedometer, fuel gauge, gear, etc.?

I think it was something added an authentic-ness not found in other games. Speeds, distances, acceleration felt more real. Very unique.

Some other games leave you wondering, "Did I just accelarate 0-100 in 3 seconds in my jalopy?" You never know.

They didn't even answer the question, at least essentially.

Hmm i think that would be a fantastic idea. I like playing games while the camera is inside the vehicle. Even the racing games where you are in disadvantage because you cant see too much ahead of you, than you would see in 3rd person. But its much more fun and immersive, so i like interior cam more
But still, Id like to know if there's even going to be fuel indicator in the game and will it still react like in the first mafia, when you get shot in the special area, you'll start loosing fuel and so on. I hope they also keep the car damage system, like when you slam your car into a wall it can only go 20% of the speed it could before and so on

    Thumbs up HUD in progress

Well, as you can probably guess, we are still working on the HUD - both its content and the visualization.

You can expect that it will be to some degree based on the original Mafia and that it will be stylish, not breaking the contemporary mood.

Everything else is still too much work in progress as we do want to have focus group people actually playing large chunks of the game with us closely observing just how much they need various elements of the HUD how often.

I would like to see the option of having a fully adjustable hud, so you can choose to have what you need for driving & then switch things off for on foot/combat.

games like Dead Space, Dark Sector etc are much better for having a completely uncluttered screen, although both used the character to display ammo health etc, which isn't really an option it does make the experience more cinematic.

Thats good to hear, because the HUD is one of the most important things in the shooting based games.

A big relief is that we still have tachometer. I wish they would have taken a bit more detailed photos in the studios though.
I think the current tachometer shows you speed (doh), milage and maybe something else (fuel? )
On-foot hud is nice too, although i couldn't spot if there was ammunition indicator or not.. And what was that bar near the minimap? health?
I can't post the photos here because that would be against the rules but I'm quite sure most of you have seen the studio photos already.

I'm just wondering whether you'd need much of an HUD at all. What is apparent from the videos when Vito gets shot is that the colours seem to bleach out and everything becomes faded, gradually coming back to life as his health increases. I personally doubt that you'd need a health meter in this regard, as you can easily tell how close you are to death.

I really loved what Mafia did in terms of the HUD. The line of words that came up when you cycled through weapons and the exclamation mark as a signal that you could do something were both very neat and tidy features, and I really hope that they're included in the new game.

Maybe Reputation Bars? Or if u can turn various things on and off then that is the health bar?
Or that could turn different colors depending on your status with the Police.

This is not Grand Theft Auto--in real life, police do not have a sixth sense, as to whether or not you are wanted by other police, and certainly do not have you on a tracking system (Grand Theft Auto IV's police not only are unintelligent, but seem to gravitate, to your position, no matter where you hide within the 'wanted bubble').

I do agree with the dash board camera view point idea for the car driving. A first person element would eliminate any issues with 'drive-by' shootings. The taxi view in Grand Theft Auto IV does illustrate very well my vision. Also, the heads up display posted by the O.P. is very well done.

Agree about mafia system is the best because if you got cought on breaking the law you can shot that police guy and wanted level is gone also when you get out of the car if police don't see you he get confused. Is that what Denby Grace was talking about when he told that you got person wanted and only car because that already exist in mafia 1.
Mafia police system is the best because is realistic and I be glad if that stay for mafia II.

Also one feature that I really like (and really rare in games) is that you enemies lost ammunition and when he run out he start fight with fists.
Even you now exact number of his bullets whan he fired around 2 bullets from magnum and when you collect his weapon is showed 4/16.

Can 2KMartin confirm if any of this exist in mafia II?

    Wink Authenticity

Well, as mentioned before, we are going for an authentic angle with this game, so you can expect us to think along the same lines as you are suggesting
